The Brief
Nearly 40 people have been arrested during Operation Sarasota S.U.R.G.E. since last August.
Operation Sarasota S.U.R.G.E. III stands for Sarasota Unified Reduction Gun Crime Enforcement.
Drugs and dozens of guns, some of which were stolen, were also seized during the operation.
SARASOTA, Fla. - Nearly 40 people have been arrested, and Sarasota police seized dozens of guns, some illegal, and pounds of illegal drugs during Operation Sarasota S.U.R.G.E. III, a joint operation with the ATF.
What is Operation Sarasota S.U.R.G.E. III
Operation Sarasota S.U.R.G.E. III stands for Sarasota Unified Reduction Gun Crime Enforcement.
The backstory
It began in August 2024 and was created to aggressively combat violent crime, particularly firearm-related offenses, and reduce the presence of illegal weapons and drugs in the city.
Over nine months, Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche said undercover detectives, working with confidential informants, conducted nearly 100 pre-planned operations.
By the numbers
Law enforcement officers recovered 43 guns. Fifteen of the guns were stolen and 10 were linked to shootings in Sarasota, Tampa and St. Petersburg. Some of the guns were recovered hours after being reported stolen.
The chief said they also seized 44 pounds of marijuana, 1.72 pounds of cocaine, 6.6 pounds of THC wax, 8.7 ounces of methamphetamine and smaller, but dangerous amounts of fentanyl, heroin, mushrooms, MDMA and hundreds of illegal prescription pills.
Who was arrested?
Thirty-nine of 42 identified suspects were arrested, and law enforcement officers are working to locate the ones still at large.
Clyde Lee was among those arrested.
Sarasota police said Lee, who has 14 prior felonies, sold 23 pieces of rock cocaine to an undercover detective for $200.
Daman Dipina was also arrested for selling marijuana near a park. Sarasota Police said he had 13 prior felonies.
What they're saying
"Just by virtue of them being in custody and being held accountable we are making the city of Sarasota a safer place. You have to remember too when you have firearms you have drugs," said Chief Troche.
"Let me be very clear. Operations like SURGE are very dangerous. Our undercover officers faced armed, violent felons in high-risk encounters and they did it with professionalism, courage and pure precision," Troche stated. "Make no mistake. If you are illegally carrying a firearm in the city of Sarasota, especially if you are a felon, you will be identified, investigated and you will be held accountable in the city of Sarasota."
"We have operations going 24/7, so if you think you're selling it to someone off the street, guess what? You're probably selling it to us and you're going to go to jail," Troche said. "With our partnership with the federal government, that's a hammer with the federal government, so is the state attorney's office. With that partnership with the federal government and the state attorney's office, that's the perfect mixture right there."

At least 3 deputies killed in explosion at L.A. County sheriff's training facility

At least three deputies were killed Friday in an explosion at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Biscailuz Training Center, according to law enforcement sources. The blast occurred just before 7:30 a.m. at the center on Eastern Avenue, which is home to the sheriff's special enforcement bureau and the arson explosive detail, including the bomb squad. Authorities were investigating, but the cause of the blast was not immediately clear. Sources told The Times that a bomb squad was moving some explosives when the blast occurred. LAPD's bomb squad responded to the scene to help render any other potential explosives safe and the immediate area has been evacuated. Officials covered the blast area with a massive tarp. About 25 yards away from the facility, the windows of an SUV cruiser were blown out by the explosion. Times staff writer Nathan Solis contributed to this report. Missing mom's convicted killer claims boyfriend tainted his trial

One of the three men convicted in the mysterious death of a Kentucky mother of five is asking a judge for a new trial. Joseph Lawson was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence in the death of 35-year-old Crystal Rogers in Bardstown, according to Fox 56. Lawson was tried alongside Rogers' boyfriend, Brooks Houck. Lawson's lawyers argued in a new motion made public Wednesday that their client should not have been tried alongside Houck, citing recorded statements made by Houck to investigators that were presented during the trial, WDRB reported. "The overwhelming amount of evidence presented at trial was not otherwise admissible in [Lawson's] trial and clearly had a spillover effect," the appeal reportedly said, adding that Lawson was denied "his right to have a fair determination of his culpability free from the taint of having been tried jointly with Brooks Houck." The attorneys reportedly claimed that, given the fact Houck did not testify during the trial, Lawson had no way to defend himself against the statements presented to the jury. Earlier this month, a jury found the two men guilty of murdering Rogers, who was last seen during Fourth of July weekend in 2015 with Houck. Police later found Rogers' maroon Chevy Impala abandoned with a flat tire along Bluegrass Parkway, with her purse, wallet and keys inside. Her body was never found. The jury in Houck and Lawson's trial recommended maximum sentences for both men, consisting of life in prison plus five years for Houck and 25 years for Lawson, WDRB reported. The two men would reportedly be required to serve 85% of their sentences before being eligible for parole. Steve Lawson, Joseph Lawson's father, was tried separately and convicted of the same charges as his son, according to the outlet. He was reportedly sentenced to life in prison and is currently appealing his conviction. A final sentencing hearing for Lawson and Houck is set for Aug. 21. Attorneys for Lawson and did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
