Top Iowa basketball recruiting target commits to Big Ten rival
Ben McCollum has won a lot of recruiting battles early in his tenure at Iowa, but he lost a big one on Thursday to a Big Ten rival school.
Colin Rice is a four-star prospect in the 2026 recruiting class from Waukee Northwest High School in Waukee, Iowa. The skilled and lengthy wing was a top target for McCollum and the Hawkeyes, as they wanted to keep his talents in-state. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Rice has other plans for his future. Joe Tipton was the first to report that Rice has committed to play his college ball for Fred Hoiberg and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
As Tipton said, Rice picked Nebraska over Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, and countless other offers. It's not the first wing the Hawkeyes have lost to Lincoln this offseason, as Pryce Sandfort transferred to Nebraska earlier this year. While it's a blow to Iowa's 2026 class, it's far from the end of the world for that group.
McCollum and the Hawks are still in the thick of a bunch of recruiting battles for great 2026 players, including four-stars Katrelle Harmon, Quinn Costello, and Arafan Diane. If Iowa can land one or two of those players, the 2026 class can still be great, and we all know what McCollum is capable of in the transfer portal.
You win some recruiting battles and you lose others. It's part of the game. While Iowa wasn't able to secure Rice for its 2026 class, McCollum has earned the trust of the fanbase with his ability to bring top talent to Iowa City.

National college football writer calls Big Ten playoff plan 'absurd'
Blake Toppmeyer at USA TODAY Sports isn't buying what the Big Ten is selling. He isn't alone. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey didn't seem to be interested in expanding the playoff on the Big Ten's terms. Tony Petitti, the commissioner of the Big Ten, has proposed an alteration to the College Football Playoff. Under his plan, the playoff would expand to 16 teams with four guaranteed bids for the Big Ten, four for the Southeastern Conference, two each for the Big 12 and the Atlantic Coast Conference, and a final spot reserved for the highest-ranked non-power conference champion. The three remaining bids would be at-large. "I think everybody outside of Big Ten land has realized that this Tony Petitti plan is patently absurd," Toppmeyer said on The Paul Finebaum Show. Big Ten coaches are behind the plan because they helped Petitti formulate it. And because it helps their conference, in turn, it helps their team. The Big Ten would have held 54 spots in the College Football Playoff over the last 11 years, the history of the playoff, if Petitti's plan were in place. "It would make the regular season worse when you consider 13 of the 16 bids would be rewarded purely off of conference standings and play-in games," Toppmeyer said. "Games like Texas-Ohio State, LSU-Clemson, Michigan-Oklahoma, that we're looking forward to this season, if we were in a world of Petitti playoff plan, those nonconference games would become glorified exhibitions. That's not how you make the season better." As much as the plan has support in the Big Ten, most of the rest of the college football world agrees with Toppmeyer. ACC and Big 12 commissioners have recommended the 5 + 11 plan, for example. But whatever changes come to the playoff will ultimately be decided by the Big Ten and SEC. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has largely hemmed and hawed on Petitti's plan so far. Any changes to the playoff format would have to be agreed on by December 1 to take effect for the 2026 season, and it's looking more like the playoff may not expand at all. Broncos training camp Day 4: Schedule, tickets, parking
The work continues. The Denver Broncos continue their 2025 training camp schedule today with Day 4 of practice scheduled for 10:00 a.m. MT at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit. Gates to the facility will open at 8 a.m. MT. Due to ongoing construction at the team's facility, capacity is limited to about 800 fans at each practice. To attend, fans are required to download free tickets on a first-come, first-served basis on Ticketmaster. The tickets for each practice were quickly claimed when they first became available, but it's worth monitoring Ticketmaster to check if tickets are returned ahead of practices. Broncos 2025 Training Camp Schedule Parking will be available at Dove Valley Regional Park (7900 S Potomac St Rd, Centennial, CO 80112) on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 8 a.m. on the morning of practice. There are fewer than 300 parking spots available, so fans are encouraged to use ride-sharing options to arrive at practice. Fans with tickets will sit at the south end of the practice fields on temporary bleachers. Fans who attend practice are encouraged to wear sunscreen and stay hydrated. Lawn chairs and umbrellas are not allowed at practice. Select players are expected to be available to sign autographs for kids aged 5-15 in a kids' zone after each practice session. Fans should note that Denver's practice schedule is subject to change due to weather. Be sure to check the team's X page for the latest updates on the practice schedule. Wisconsin football offers one of Sacramento State's class of 2027 commits
Wisconsin football extended an offer to class of 2027 wide receiver Chance McPike Jr. on Monday. Notably, McPike committed to Sacramento State on July 4. His offer sheet has grown since that date, with Wisconsin, Purdue and Eastern Kentucky all joining his recruitment. The Paducah, Kentucky, native also holds offers from Kentucky, Michigan State, Missouri, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Tennessee and others. 247Sports has yet to assign a star rating or position ranking to the 6-foot-1 wide receiver. Despite his commitment to Sacramento State, On3/Rivals lists Missouri as the current favorite in his recruitment at 50%, with Ole Miss (22.9%) and Tennessee (19.6%) also top contenders. McPike Jr. joins Wisconsin's loaded group of wide receiver offers in the class of 2027. That list also includes five-star prospects Monshun Sales and Lawrence Britt, as well as top-ranked four-stars Myles McAfee, Quentin Burrell, Kesean Bowman (Oregon commit), Dakota Guerrant and Damani Warren. Wisconsin has yet to land a commitment in the 2027 cycle. Its primary focus remains on 2026, where the program's class of 14 commitments ranks just No. 60 nationally and No. 16 in the Big Ten.
