A mother's love: Elephant refuses to leave injured calf's side

Focus Malaysia14-06-2025
A BABY elephant, caught in a cruel snare near Felda Neram Satu, Terengganu, lay injured and helpless—its tiny frame twisted in pain.
Yet beside it was the mother, unmoving and loyal, refusing to leave as though pleading for mercy.
In a viral 44-second TikTok video, the mother's silent vigil moved thousands. Thanks to a quick call by local resident Mohamad Affendi Alwi, wildlife rangers rescued the calf.
It survived, but the emotional weight of the moment lingered, particularly with another recent viral video of a mother standing still with her infant's dead body.
'After seeing the elephants, I immediately contacted the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan). Alhamdulillah, they did not take long to arrive and carry out the rescue operation,' Mohamad Affendi Alwi said.
According to him, the rescue efforts by Perhilitan officers successfully freed the baby elephant from the snare, and it was released back into its natural habitat.
Just days earlier, on May 11, a similar scene unfolded on Malaysia's East-West Highway, but this one ended in heartbreak.
A juvenile elephant, only five years old, was fatally struck by a lorry in the early hours of the morning. A passing driver filmed the aftermath.
The mother elephant, grief-stricken, pressed her head against the lorry that crushed her child, as if trying to nudge it away.
She stayed there for hours, unwilling to accept the loss until wildlife officers sedated her and guided her back into the forest.
Netizens expressed sorrow at the footage, especially given the timing since the tragedy occurred on Mother's Day. —June 14, 2025

Students share tips for staying safe on internet

Published on: Saturday, July 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025 Text Size: Luqman (left) and Noah thrilled to receive posters signed by Fahmi. STAYING calm and ignoring negative comments is how Form 1 student Luqman Aziz Khairul Azizul avoids online conflict. Luqman, a student from the Bistari class at SM St. Mary, said he only browses the internet during his free time and prefers to focus on positive, useful content. 'I usually scroll through posts that are fun or motivational like DidikTV, funny videos, and entertainment. When I see negative or hateful comments, I just ignore them,' he said. He added that he recently switched from Instagram to TikTok, where he also shops for things like watches and clothes under his mother's supervision. His classmate, Noah Joseph Hannay from Form 1 Dinamik, who has had an Instagram account since Year 5, said he is aware of cyberbullying cases that have gone viral and views them as unethical. 'I don't post much. I mainly scroll through the latest updates on IG. I'm especially into K-pop content, something I picked up from my sister. Cyberbullying is wrong; we should just leave positive comments,' Noah said. Meanwhile, Form 3 student and K-Dat Icon vest recipient Faradira Haratio urged her peers to report any cases of bullying whether online or in school to their parents or teachers. 'For me, bullies need to be identified so they can be punished. Honestly, it makes me angry when people bully others. 'So I always tell friends who are being bullied not to stay silent. Speak up and report it to your parents or teachers,' said Faradira, who is also a school prefect and whose Instagram account is managed by her mother. All three students were visibly excited after receiving posters signed by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil during the Kempen Keselamatan Internet (KIS) at SM St. Mary on Wednesday. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Perhilitan relocates more elephants from conflict hotspot Kluang

JOHOR BAHRU, July 26 — The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has transferred another two elephants caught in Kampung Sri Lukut, Kahang, Kluang to a suitable habitat yesterday. Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the elephants were part of nine caught in an operation on July 14, with four of them having been sent to a suitable location on July 23, a juvenile elephant sent to the elephant sanctuary in Kota Tinggi to be trained into a guide elephant and the remaining two will be transferred on July 28. 'The biggest transfer in the history of the state was also assisted by special elephant units from another state and is hoped that it will reduce human–elephant conflict in affected areas,' he said in a statement last night, adding that the transfer took five hours. Perhilitan also previously reported that they received 699 complaints involving elephants in Johor between 2020 and 2024, with 228 from Kluang, making it a hotspot for human–elephant conflict in the state. — Bernama
