Limpopo doctor investigated for allegedly trying to rape pregnant woman
The Limpopo health department has launched an investigation after a doctor allegedly attempted to rape a 22-year-old pregnant patient at George Masebe Hospital.
The incident allegedly happened in the early hours of Sunday morning in the sonar room during an abdominal ultrasound, which was required as part of the patient's ongoing observation related to her pregnancy.
Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego expressed deep disappointment in the reported incident and assured the public that the department takes such allegations seriously.
Probe
Mashego indicated that hospitals are supposed to be 'havens for the weak and vulnerable' and that healthcare professionals are expected to exhibit above-reproach conduct to cement this expectation.
'The department pledges to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies, as this matter has been reported to the police for further investigation.

'In addition to supporting the police inquiry, we have initiated our own internal investigation to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding this incident,' said Mashego.
Police investigations
Meanwhile, the acting Limpopo police provincial commissioner, Major General Samuel Manala, has ordered a thorough investigation following a rape at the hospital in Tinmyne policing precinct outside Mokopane, Waterberg District.
A case of rape has since been opened.
Manala said the suspect has not yet been arrested, and investigations continue.
'Crimes of this nature are extremely serious and particularly disturbing when committed by individuals entrusted with the care of vulnerable members of our community. We are treating this case with the urgency and sensitivity it deserves, and we urge anyone who may have additional information to come forward.'
6-year-old raped
Earlier this month, a foreign national was arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a little girl.
The incident involving a six-year-old girl was reported to police on 3 April, with the Ethiopian man arrested two days later.
The six-year-old girl was reportedly sent to a spaza shop in Arnot near Hendrina.
Upon returning, the girl relayed to her family that she had been sexually assaulted, with the family reporting the matter to the police.

LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Department of Health is urging males aged 10 and older to participate in its voluntary male circumcision campaign, launched as part of a province-wide effort to reduce the risk of HIV transmission and promote better overall male health. ADDIS ABABA - Ethiopian authorities must "stop harassing" its health workers, who have been on strike for weeks demanding better wage conditions, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Thursday. Police said in May that they had arrested 47 health workers for taking part in the nationwide strike, which has halted non-emergency services at public hospitals and teaching institutions. An online healthcare workers' group told HRW that 148 healthcare workers had been arrested between early May and early June, though the figure could not be corroborated. "The Ethiopian authorities have resorted to repressive tactics instead of addressing healthcare workers' concerns about their livelihoods and safety," said Laetitia Bader, HRW's deputy Africa director, in a statement. "The government should immediately lift the suspension of the Ethiopian Health Professionals Association and stop harassing healthcare workers," she added. The association was suspended earlier this month for supporting the strike and HRW says health professionals have been subjected to "threats and intimidation". 4 people shot, 3 dead in Bushbuckridge
Four people were shot in separate incidents in Bushbuckridge between Sunday and Monday. Mpumalanga News reports that, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the police received information about an Ethiopian national who had been shot on the R536 near Cork Trust in the Calcutta policing area yesterday. 'Upon their arrival, the officers found the victim seated behind the steering wheel of a blue VW Caravelle Combi. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and chest, and was declared dead on the scene by emergency medical services [EMS],' she says. Ndubane says it is alleged that the victim was en route to visit a friend in Somerset Trust when he was ambushed by people driving in a white Toyota bakkie. 'The suspects reportedly opened fire while the vehicle was in motion. Some spent cartridges were recovered at the scene. The victim's vehicle [was] riddled [with bullets],' Ndubane says. In another incident on Sunday, the police responded to a shooting at a tavern in Oakley near Mkhuhlu in the Calcutta policing area at about 00:30. They found a silver-grey VW Polo TSI parked at the entrance of the tavern with bullet holes and the windows shattered. 'The driver had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared dead by EMS on the scene,' Ndubane says. She says there was a woman inside the car, but she only sustained some injuries. This victim was taken to hospital for treatment. Some spent cartridges were recovered at the scene. The motive for the shooting is unknown, and no arrests have been made yet. Earlier that same evening, the SAPS responded to another shooting incident at a tavern in Marite Trust. The officers discovered the body of a man with two gunshot wounds. EMS declared him dead on the scene. No arrests have been made, and investigations continue. The SAPS urge anyone with information that may assist in these investigations to contact Lieutenant Colonel Skhumbuzo Ceko on 082 992 9902.
