
Organisations boost AI security as data threats & risks evolve
The survey, conducted by S&P Global Market Intelligence 451 Research, captured the opinions of more than 3,000 IT and security professionals across 20 countries and 15 industries, providing insight into current and emerging data security threats faced by businesses worldwide.
The report indicates that three key concerns consistently emerged regarding artificial intelligence: the pace of development (cited as the leading risk by nearly seven in ten respondents), followed by questions over AI's integrity (64%), and its trustworthiness (57%).
Spending on generative AI security has seen a marked increase since previous years. Seventy-three percent of respondents said their organisations were now investing in AI-specific security tools, with funding sourced either from new or existing budgets. Security for generative AI has risen to become the second highest security spending priority after cloud security.
Eric Hanselman, Chief Analyst at S&P Global Market Intelligence 451 Research, described the pressures companies are facing. "The fast-evolving GenAI landscape is pressuring enterprises to move quickly, sometimes at the cost of caution, as they race to stay ahead of the adoption curve," he said. "Many enterprises are deploying GenAI faster than they can fully understand their application architectures, compounded by the rapid spread of SaaS tools embedding GenAI capabilities, adding layers of complexity and risk."
The report highlights that organisations are adapting different strategies to address AI-related security challenges. Over two-thirds have obtained security tools directly from their cloud providers, while three in five are relying on established security vendors, and nearly half are working with startups specialising in this area.
Adoption of generative AI is already well underway in many firms, with a third of surveyed organisations indicating that the technology is either being integrated into their operations or is actively transforming them. As agentic AI applications develop – those capable of decision-making or acting on data – the importance of ensuring data quality and security grows further.
The risk environment for organisations, however, remains complex. Malicious software, or malware, continues to be reported as the most persistent attack vector since 2021. This year, phishing rose to become the second most common type of attack, while ransomware dropped to third place. The report notes a modest decline in the rates of reported data breaches: 56% of respondents experienced such an incident in 2021, compared to 45% in 2025. The percentage reporting a breach within the previous 12 months also fell, from 23% in 2021 to 14% in 2025.
The report also details the shifting landscape of cyber threat actors. External sources, especially hacktivists and nation-state actors, are now seen as the most concerning, with human error falling to third place as a source of breaches in the current year's results.
Quantum computing is generating increased concern among organisations regarding the security of encrypted data. The top quantum-related risk identified by 63% of respondents is the potential compromise of today's encrypted data – the fear that quantum computers could one day break through current or future encryption protocols, exposing sensitive information. Other major threats include vulnerabilities in encryption key distribution, cited by 61%, and the so-called "harvest now, decrypt later" risk, identified by 58%, relating to the collection of encrypted data today for decryption once quantum capabilities mature.
The report found that half of surveyed organisations are reassessing their encryption strategies in response to these threats, and 60% are in the process of either prototyping or evaluating post-quantum cryptography solutions. Only one in three organisations reported that they trust telecoms or cloud providers to manage this transition.
Todd Moore, Global Vice President, Data Security Products at Thales, commented on the findings: "The clock is ticking on post-quantum readiness. It's encouraging that three out of five organizations are already prototyping new ciphers, but deployment timelines are tight and falling behind could leave critical data exposed," he said. "Even with clear timelines for transitioning to PQC algorithms, the pace of encryption change has been slower than expected due to a mix of legacy systems, complexity, and the challenge of balancing innovation with security."
The results of the 2025 Data Threat Report indicate that while there have been improvements in the overall security posture of organisations, further efforts will be required to fully address the risks and operational demands posed by emerging technologies such as generative AI and quantum computing.

Most software executives plan custom AI agents to drive change
New research indicates that 93% of software executives are planning to develop or are already developing custom AI agents within their organisations, reflecting a significant shift towards agentic AI adoption across the industry. The report, titled Navigating Agentic AI & Generative AI in Software Development: Human-Agent Collaboration is Here , was commissioned by OutSystems in partnership with CIO Dive and KPMG. Surveying 550 global software executives, it explores how artificial intelligence is affecting the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and the workplace at large. AI changing software development With technology budgets scrutinised and outcomes under pressure, IT leaders are increasingly turning to agentic AI to address operational hurdles such as fragmented toolsets and siloed data. Businesses are reporting that agentic AI enables them to automate key workflows, offer more personalised digital services, and innovate rapidly - all while maintaining compliance, security, and governance standards. Woodson Martin, Chief Executive Officer of OutSystems, commented, "The software development lifecycle is undergoing a significant transformation as organizations increase AI investments to maintain their competitive edge. Blending AI with development tools enables IT leaders to manage this shift effectively and securely. In a near future, AI agents acting as highly specialized teams will continuously monitor business needs, identify opportunities, and proactively refine software solutions, allowing developers and business leaders to play a more creative role and focus on strategic priorities. This report underscores how AI advancements are reshaping traditional roles and unlocking opportunities for innovation and collaboration between humans and technology." Survey respondents highlighted concrete results from AI adoption: more than two thirds reported increased developer productivity and higher-quality software with fewer bugs. Additionally, 62% noted improved scalability in development, while 60% cited greater efficiency in testing and quality assurance (QA). Impacts on the workforce The report projects that experimentation with agentic AI and its uptake over the next 24 months will drive organisational change. According to the survey, 69% of software executives expect AI to introduce new, more specialised roles - including oversight, governance, prompt engineering, agent architecture, and agent orchestration - to adapt to AI's evolving function within companies. Furthermore, 63% of respondents said AI will require considerable upskilling or reskilling of existing teams to meet the skills needed in this new landscape. Where AI is being used Almost half (46%) of executives report their organisations already integrate agentic AI into workflows, with a further 28% in the piloting stage. The most anticipated area for AI agent deployment is customer support, with 49% planning to use AI agents to handle customer inquiries and support functions autonomously. The focus on customer service exceeds other domains such as product development (38%), sales and marketing (32%), supply chain management (28%), human resources (24%), and finance and accounting (23%). Drivers and risks associated with AI The primary goals for AI adoption, as expressed by over half the respondents, include improving customer experience (56%), automating repetitive tasks (55%), accelerating software development (54%), and advancing broader digital transformation objectives (53%). However, the report also identifies significant challenges. 64% of software executives cited risks around governance, security, and compliance with widespread AI adoption. An equal proportion expressed concerns regarding transparency and reliability of AI decisions. The proliferation of disparate AI tools has led to new issues with oversight and increasing technical debt, with 44% identifying AI sprawl as a growing risk. Addressing these burdens will be critical in ensuring AI's long-term value for business. Building confidence in AI tools Michael Harper, Managing Director at KPMG LLP, noted, "A lot of organizations started with pilots a year ago or even prior to that, but now they're starting to see real efficiency gains in areas like code generation and application testing. Those activities are giving organizations more confidence in using these tools and helping them to move forward." The survey covered executives from a range of industries and geographies, including IT consultancy, manufacturing, banking, financial services, and insurance, with data collected across the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, France, Canada, Australia, India, and Germany.

AI adoption low among NZ SMEs despite positive impacts, survey reveals
MYOB chief customer officer Dean Chadwick said emerging trends in the use of AI locally focus on driving awareness and sales. 'Our insights show SMEs are primarily employing AI tools to bolster marketing efforts – helping with the copywriting of marketing materials and press releases (39%) or generating social media posts (31%),' Chadwick said. 'A consistent voice in market is key for businesses to stay top of mind for their audience, particularly in an economic environment when every dollar of revenue counts.' Chadwick explained that the use of AI aligns with the top skills SMEs identified would be the most important to their business over the next five years, namely customer service (40%) and marketing (32%). Kiwi SMEs are also proactively using AI tools for copywriting technical documents, reports and training materials (25%), customer service support including chatbots and virtual assistants (21%), and for analysing markets, trends and risks (21%). One interesting insight from the survey highlighted that younger generations of business owners are leading the way when it comes to AI adoption. Almost all of the Gen Z business operators surveyed (93%) and more than half (59%) of millennials polled had started using AI tools in their businesses. This is compared with Gen X and Baby Boomer business owners, who sit at 28% and 17% respectively. 'In taking the heavy-lifting and time investment out of some of these tasks, the efficiency gain AI provides to SMEs not only ensures business owners can focus on higher-value tasks, it also offers a reprieve on workload. 'Alongside cashflow concerns, workload is the top business-related factor that has negatively impacted the mental wellbeing of a third of local business operators in the past two years. Intelligent tools that can help ease this burden will likely improve employee engagement and well-being as a result.' As to why adoption is not as high, 39% of SMEs surveyed felt AI tools weren't needed or appropriate for their business, with 30% of this group believing they don't know enough about it. Some respondents were more specific, with 18% believing there weren't any AI tools specific to their business needs. However, almost a fifth (19%) still don't trust the new technology. 'Knowledge and confidence play a big role in the adoption of new technologies. It's understandable that a portion of SMEs are hesitant to embrace AI in their businesses.' 'However, given the integration of AI in a range of everyday systems, from autocompleting sentences in email, to reminders and forecasting in business management software, it's also possible many business owners don't realise they're already using AI.' Chadwick said SME owners who are still hesitant should discuss the topic with a business mentor or speak with other businesses to learn how they are benefiting from the technology. The MYOB Business Monitor is a national survey of more than 1000 New Zealand business owners, managers and directors, from sole traders to medium-sized companies, representing the major industry sectors. New Zealand looks to learn from China's technology innovations

Artificial intelligence, robotics, electric vehicles and new forms of energy were frequently referenced by speakers and panelists at the 11th China Business Summit in Auckland on Friday. The event coincided with Technology Minister Shane Reti's announcement of a new institute to advance technology to be created in the country's largest city. Zheng Liang, deputy director of the China Institute for Science and Technology Policy at Tsinghua University, outlined the three stages of China's science and technology development. Initially, China just adopted technology from Western nations before integrating practice from around the world for indigenous innovation, he said. After entering the third stage, China was now striving for breakthroughs in more fundamental research and development, Liang said, adding that AI and electric vehicles were just some of the achievements. "What has made this happen [is] continuous investment in research and development in the past four decades," Liang said. He said ongoing policy support, China's openness to the world and successes in developing an internet economy also drove China's breakthroughs in AI. Liang highlighted China's use of AI in agriculture to help with harvesting, in healthcare to help with diagnosis and treatment, in pharmaceuticals to help with administration and stock control, in tourism to create virtual experiences, as well as in education manufacturing and governance. "I think New Zealand ... [can] do [something] similar," Liang said, pointing to agriculture and tourism specifically. Liang said the two countries complemented each other and could work together. "Maybe China could [provide] some practices [and] experiences, and New Zealand can [offer] the new potential scenarios [in terms of] how to adopt this kind of technology and experience," Liang said. "We can't replicate the power of AI research of China or the United States or the European Union," Witbrock said. "But we can - and we do - have the capability to significantly contribute to its development and, therefore, be part of determining our future and the future of our fellow humanity. "I hope you'll join us in helping us to build an AI capability in New Zealand ... and to direct it into technology as well for our economic advantage and for hopefully China's economic advantage as well." Witbrock expected growing pains while the country embraced AI but said it was better to face up to challenges. "New Zealand in the past has had a history of facing up to social reality and social change and doing the right thing and doing a thing which has, at those times, actually were periods of great innovation and great growth for New Zealand culture," he said. "I think we can do this again for AI and it's going to happen," Witbrock said. "The sooner we face up to it, the sooner we start to work out [such things as] how does economy work, how does resource allocation work, how do people get what they need to live their lives, the better we'll do. "In that transition period, there are enormous short-term gains for the country as well by ... exploiting ... the economic benefits of those productivity gains." "There are some real areas of expertise ... that's coming through some world-class universities, amazing research programmes and then obviously being able to convert that technology," he said. "We need to adopt a lot more technology and science innovation into our system as well because that tells me how we're going to get some of those productivity gains that we're so desperately looking for."
