Auburn baseball drops four spots in latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll
The Auburn Tigers dropped four spots in the latest USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll, falling from No. 6 to No. 10 after losing two of three versus then-No. 25 Ole Miss on the road over the weekend. The Rebels jumped from No. 25 to No. 20 after the two wins over Auburn. The Tigers entered the weekend tied for fourth place in the SEC and had an opportunity to get a double bye in the SEC Baseball Tournament. Auburn now finishes sixth in the SEC and will play its first game on Thursday.
While the weekend did not go the way the Tigers had hoped, they did get a mid-week victory over Jacksonville State. The Tigers defeated the Gamecocks 19-1 in a game that was over after seven innings. Chris Rembert had two hits with two runs scored and three RBIs. He also hit a home run in the third inning to give Auburn a 7-0 lead. Pitcher Andreas Alvarez picked up his second win of the season, pitching five scoreless innings. Up 7-0 entering the fourth inning, the Tigers scored 11 runs to put the game out of reach.
The Auburn pitchers struggled throughout the series versus Ole Miss, giving up a total of 32 runs. They lost game one (9-2) and game two (15-11). Auburn avoided the sweep with a 13-8 win on Saturday. Auburn entered the sixth inning down 8-3, but Ole Miss would not score another run. Auburn tied the game at eight when Eric Guevara and Cooper McMurray scored after Lucas Steele hit a double. Rembert hit his own double, and Chase Fralick scored to give Auburn a 9-8 lead. Ike Irish hit a home run in the fourth inning for his 16th of the season.
The SEC featured eight more teams in the USA TODAY Baseball Coaches Poll. LSU remained as the No. 1 team with Texas behind them at No. 2. The other SEC teams were Arkansas (No. 4), Georgia (No. 8), Vanderbilt (No. 9), Florida (No. 15), Tennessee (No. 17), and Alabama (No. 21). Auburn will play the winner between Mississippi State and Texas A&M on Thursday at 11 a.m. CT on the SEC Network. Auburn was 2-1 versus Mississippi State and did not play Texas A&M this season.

If the Steelers do pursue another safety in free agency, my money would be on four-time All-Pro Justin Simmons or Julian Blackmon.
