ASI transfers officer, DMK and Tamil Nadu parties cry foul
Ramakrishna, who was serving as the Director (Antiquity) and as Director of the National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities (NMMA), will henceforth be the director of only the NMMA.
While TN parties have been asserting that the Keezhadi report provides evidence to indicate that the Sangam Age — which shows the antiquity of Tamil — could be pushed back to 800 BCE, making it around 300-500 years older than what was earlier thought, the union government had demanded more data, evidence and proof to acknowledge that claim. Reacting to Ramakrishna's transfer on Tuesday, the ruling DMK has alleged that 'it is a ploy to withdraw the (Keezhadi) report and dilute the findings'.
The senior archaeologist, who is facing his third transfer since being promoted to the rank of a director, will have to shift from his office at the ASI's headquarters in New Delhi to the office of NMMA located in Greater Noida, sources said.
Interestingly, H A Naik, the officer who had directed Ramakrishna to rework his report on the first two phases of excavation in Keezhadi (located in Sivaganga district near Madurai) with additional information regarding the dating, has been given additional charge as director (Antiquity).
It was Naik's letter that kicked up a controversy last month as the DMK and other TN parties opposed to BJP had alleged this letter, which was sent around two-and-a-half years after Ramakrishna submitted his report, is a delaying tactic by the centre from bringing out the excavation results to the public domain.

Quoting the Supreme Court's remarks, Mr. Bhatia alleged that this was not the first time Mr. Gandhi had displayed 'such an anti-India' mindset. He referred to another defamation case involving comments by the Congress leader about V.D. Savarkar. 'We all know that the commission-hungry Congress failed to procure Rafale jets for 10 years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made sure that the Air Force received these aircraft. Displaying similar immaturity, Rahul Gandhi used inappropriate language for the Prime Minister. Subsequently, the Supreme Court's decision affirmed that the addition of Rafale jets strengthened the Air Force and was in India's national interest,' Mr. Bhatia added.

Monsoon Session: Delhi CM tables two CAG audit reports of AAP term
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday tabled two Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) reports in the Assembly on the performance of the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. However, there was no discussion on the reports. With this, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has tabled 10 out of 14 pending CAG reports on AAP's governance. The first report, titled 'Welfare of Building and Other Construction Workers', pointed out several shortcomings in the schemes for construction workers, including unreliable data, duplication of registered workers, and discrepancies in the cess collected from builders for workers' welfare. The Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board (DBOCWWB) is already facing an Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) probe over registration of 'ghost workers'. The other CAG report, titled 'State Finances for the year 2023-24', highlighted a 55.30% fall in revenue surplus in one year — ₹14,457 crore in 2022-23 to ₹6,462 crore in 2023-24. The report also noted a 'continuous mismatch' between receipts and expenditure, indicating a 'rising fiscal stress'. Responding to CAG's findings regarding the welfare of construction workers, AAP said that Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena and the BJP-led Centre should admit 'that they failed in their primary duty of vigilance and posted corrupt officers in sensitive positions'. 'Many loopholes' About the registration of workers with the DBOCWWB, the report said, 'The availability of duplicate images, images with no faces, and multiple registrations of the same face indicates several loopholes in the registration process.' In its audit spanning four years up to March 2023, the CAG also identified 'huge differences' in the records of cess collectors, district records and the board regarding the total cess collection. 'The difference in figures of the cess as per district records and as per the board for four years amounted to ₹204.95 crore. The differences were not reconciled. The department did not maintain a reconciled database of cess assessed, collected and remitted,' stated the report. A Delhi government official said the board had responded to the CAG's findings with a 'point-by-point' rebuttal, which was not included in the report. 'The discrepancies in data were due to a shift to a newer portal for workers created by the National Informatics Centre. The differences in cess collections were due to some builders depositing the money to the district office and others directly to the board's bank account,' the official added. The official added that the performance audit has neither found any 'ghost worker' in the system nor any embezzlement. L-G to blame: AAP In a statement, AAP said, 'Right from 2015, the BJP-appointed L-G appointed his favourite officers at sensitive positions in the government. It was the BJP-appointed L-G who headed the Vigilance and ACB departments. It was the primary duty of the L-G to prevent corruption.'

SC prohibits construction and commercial use near historic Gumti structure in Defence Colony
New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) The Supreme Court has directed that the park adjacent to the historic Gumti structure located in Defence Colony, New Delhi, must not be used for any purpose other than public recreation and preservation. The Court made it clear that no construction of facilities like badminton or basketball courts, nor any form of commercial activity, will be permitted due to the sensitive nature and spatial constraints of the area. A Bench comprising Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah was hearing a writ petition filed in 2019 seeking protection of the Gumti under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. "The only direction which needs to be given here is that the park should not be used for any other purpose. No activities such as construction of a badminton or basketball court shall be undertaken, considering the limitations of the area itself," the Bench observed. It added, 'Needless to say, there shall be no commercial activity or kiosks/shops allowed in the vicinity.' The petition was filed after the Defence Colony Welfare Association (DCWA) allegedly carried out unauthorized alterations near the monument, despite its historical significance. Representing the petitioner was Senior Advocate Shikhil Shiv Suri. Senior Advocates Garima Prasad and Gopal Sankaranarayanan, along with Advocate Shubhranshu Padhi, represented the respondents, with Sankaranarayanan also serving as the Court Commissioner. The case has a long history. In 2004, the Central Government issued a gazette notification intending to declare the Gumti as a monument of national importance. However, this was met with objections from the DCWA, causing delays within the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). After the Delhi High Court dismissed the petitioner's plea for protection under the 1958 Act, the matter was brought before the Supreme Court. In a significant development on July 16, 2025, the apex court criticized the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for its actions, noting that they appeared to obstruct justice. The Court had then considered issuing contempt notice and directed the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the unauthorized occupation and modifications around the monument. The Court also instructed the MCD to demolish all unauthorised structures, clean the area, and hand it over to the Department of Archaeology. The Bench took note of ongoing efforts and pending tasks including, finalising and completing the Gumti's restoration plan. Publishing the official notification declaring it a protected monument. Clearing remaining debris and leveling the park area and finalizing the landscape plan with permissible public activities like cycling and walking. The Bench emphasized that the park, which consists of four quadrants, should be maintained and beautified for the benefit of the general public while preserving its natural character.
