Khareef tourism pushes hotel occupancy to new highs

SALALAH: Hotels and hospitality providers across Dhofar Governorate are reporting record-high occupancy rates during the ongoing Khareef Dhofar Season 2025, driven by favourable weather, enhanced infrastructure and rising regional interest. Industry sources confirmed that hotel bookings in Salalah and surrounding wilayats have surpassed 90 per cent since mid-July. Family resorts, boutique guesthouses and furnished apartments are operating at full capacity on weekends and public holidays. A surge in domestic travel, improved air connectivity and targeted marketing campaigns across the Gulf have all contributed to the uptick in tourism. The khareef season, which typically spans from late June to early September, continues to draw a steady stream of visitors from across Oman and neighbouring GCC countries. 'Compared to last year, we are seeing a marked increase in both length of stay and per-guest spending,' said an executive from a leading four-star hotel in Salalah. 'Families are arriving earlier and staying longer, with high demand for suites and sea-view rooms.' Demand has also spilled over into alternative accommodations such as serviced apartments, home rentals and eco-lodges, especially near Ittin, Al Mughsail and the Dhofar highlands. Mobile platforms offering short-term stays have reported record bookings and listings. Said al Maashani, who runs a family-operated mountain lodge, said, 'Visitors are looking for comfort and proximity to nature. We're fully booked until the end of August.' The hospitality boom has had a ripple effect on related sectors including car rentals, dining, tour guiding and outdoor leisure businesses. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism attributes the strong season to early planning, robust promotion and infrastructure enhancements. Salalah Airport has added domestic and regional flights, while road improvements have eased access to tourist hotspots. Officials also highlighted the alignment of khareef 2025 with Oman Vision 2040.

Oman's tourism and hospitality sectors undergo transformative growth

Muscat: Oman's tourism and hospitality sectors are undergoing significant expansion as the country advances its long-term development goals under Vision 2040. A new Growth Perspectives Video produced by Oxford Business Group (OBG), in partnership with Omran Group, examines how investment, innovation and sustainable practices are helping to position tourism as a key contributor to national progress. The video, titled Oman's tourism and hospitality sectors undergo transformative growth, highlights the country's target of attracting 11 million tourists annually by 2040, supported by around OMR20 billion ($51bn) in projected investment to the sector, according to National Tourism Strategy 2040. Particular focus is placed on the contribution of the hospitality segment, which is forecast to achieve a compound annual growth rate of 6.3% by 2026, according to Oman's National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). The video outlines the importance of a broad range of offerings—from luxury resorts and business hotels to eco-lodges—and explores Oman's efforts to align tourism development with environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles. In line with Oman's National Tourism Strategy, the sector's growth is being guided by a commitment to cultural preservation and sustainable development. Strategic projects such as the Sustainable City Yiti in Muscat—a $1bn eco-urban initiative—demonstrate how Oman is combining infrastructure modernisation with climate-conscious planning. The country is also leveraging its rich cultural heritage and natural attractions, including UNESCO World Heritage sites and diverse landscapes across its governorates. Dana Carmen Agarbicean, OBG's Country Director for Oman, said the country's growing profile as a tourism destination reflects effective public-private collaboration and a clear strategic vision. 'Oman's tourism and hospitality sectors are becoming increasingly important pillars of economic diversification. The sector's expansion is supported by targeted investment, institutional coordination and an emphasis on sustainable, inclusive growth.' This Growth Perspectives Video forms part of Oxford Business Group's wider research for The Report: Oman 2025, the Group's forthcoming publication on the country's investment opportunities and economic developments. The report will also feature a detailed interview with Hashil bin Obaid Al Mahrouqi, the Chief Executive Officer at Omran Group. Khareef business gets boost with over 600 work permits

SALALAH, AUGUST 1 The Ministry of Labour, through its Dhofar Directorate, has issued more than 600 temporary work permits since the start of the Khareef Dhofar Season 2025, as part of efforts to facilitate commercial activity and support entrepreneurs during the peak tourism period in the governorate. According to the Director General of the Ministry's Labour Directorate in Dhofar, the temporary permits — provided free of charge — allow the hiring of expatriate workers for non-Omani-exclusive jobs, particularly roles that citizens are typically reluctant to take. He explained that the initiative helps regulate seasonal employment, meeting the surge in demand from small businesses and entrepreneurs, especially in sectors such as food services, logistics and event management. The official added that the service has seen strong demand from owners of small and seasonal enterprises, offering a legal and flexible mechanism to bring in workforce support without breaching labour regulations. Permit holders are also expected to employ and supervise Omani staff, ensuring that nationals remain engaged in seasonal business operations. He stressed that the initiative reflects the Ministry's commitment to promoting entrepreneurship and reducing administrative burdens, by waiving fees and streamlining the application and approval process. It also ensures legal compliance and labour protection across all operational fronts. This effort comes as part of wider government measures to encourage local and seasonal investment in Dhofar Governorate, which welcomes tens of thousands of visitors during the annual monsoon season. The facilitation is expected to boost the quality and scale of tourism and retail services, while maintaining a well-regulated business environment. With tourism activities intensifying across Dhofar's wilayats, demand for temporary permits is expected to grow further in the coming weeks — empowering private sector participation and supporting local economic momentum through legal seasonal employment channels.
