Don't jump ship when the seas get rough, Zahid implores BN partners amid dwindling seat numbers
The BN chairman also urged component parties not to be hasty nor threaten to leave the coalition in light of current political challenges.
'I tell my (component) partners, currently it's tough, MIC has one seat, MCA has two and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) one seat in Sabah. We (Umno) also have it tough, only 26 seats, used to be 64 and before then over a hundred.
'In times of trouble, Umno will not abandon MCA, MIC, PBRS or Friends of BN. This is our way, don't threaten to leave during hard times,' he said during his speech officiating the Selayang Umno Division delegates' meeting here yesterday.
He also denied allegations that BN component parties like MCA were sidelined in seat allocations, including Malay-majority seats, during a media conference after the meeting, pointing out that MCA and MIC were entrusted with contesting in traditional Malay seats.
'Which Malay-majority seat do we not give to MCA? Tanjung Piai isn't a Malay seat? Or Ayer Hitam isn't a Malay seat? All Malay seats that we give to MCA means we respect them.
'MCA is a loyal BN component partner since a long time back, that's what we will preserve. The same with seats to MIC, all Malay seats we give are entrusted to them to contest,' he said.
Previous media reports had stated that former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker was urging the party to not be sidelined during the 16th general election and needed to be given suitable seats to prove their relevance, including Malay-majority seats.
In other developments, Ahmad Zahid urged those who were pressing for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to resign to respect the legal process and democratic system in the country, pointing out that Anwar currently enjoyed the support of 154 MPs, or over two-thirds majority. — Bernama

The new requirement falls under Section 12 of the Strategic Trade Act 2010, which serves as a catch-all control provision for items not explicitly listed in the Strategic Items List. Companies and individuals must notify authorities at least 30 days before moving these AI chips if they know or suspect potential misuse or restricted activities. "This initiative serves to close regulatory gaps while Malaysia undertakes further review on the inclusion of high-performance AI chips of US origin into the SIL (Strategic Items List) of the STA 2010 (Strategic Trade Act)," the ministry said in a statement. Malaysia has warned it will take strict legal action against any violations of the Strategic Trade Act 2010 or related laws. The ministry emphasised that while Malaysia supports investments and trade aligned with international best practices, all entities must comply with relevant international obligations to avoid secondary sanctions. Miti also reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to maintaining a safe, secure, transparent, and rules-based trading environment with all trade partners. Last week, Bloomberg reported that the US plans to restrict shipments of advanced AI chips to Malaysia to prevent them from being diverted to China, as part of a broader crackdown on semiconductor smuggling. Despite Malaysia's previous pledges to tighten import scrutiny, chip exports to the country have surged, drawing US attention and prompting proposed curbs that may include temporary exemptions for American and allied firms operating there.

She hopes Barisan Nasional (BN) will field candidates in all four state seats, namely Silam, Segama, Kunak and Tungku. 'Grassroots support remains intact. While we lost in 2018 and 2020, that is not an absolute measure,' she said at the Lahad Datu Umno Wanita Delegates Meeting held at the Dewan Chee Yee Khor. 'The 2018 defeat was due to a nationwide political tsunami, and in 2020 we faced coalition conflicts that were incompatible and detrimental,' she added. ‘Why should we be arrogant?': Pakatan-BN combo can win big in Sabah polls says Umno sec-gen
TANJONG KARANG, July 14 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) can secure a big win in the next Sabah state election if they join forces, based on trends in past elections, said Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. He said the cooperation between the two coalitions has become a benchmark, as this element was key to their significant wins in three state by-elections — Ayer Kuning in Perak, Mahkota in Johor and Nenggiri in Kelantan. 'We've seen how we managed to win in polling districts that we had never won before, particularly in areas with non-Malay majorities, all because of this cooperation. 'So why should we be arrogant and refuse to work with others? Umno is an open and dynamic party,' he told reporters after opening the Tanjong Karang Umno division delegates meeting here today. Asyraf Wajdi further said that negotiations between PH and BN for cooperation in the Sabah state election have reached 98 per cent completion. Meanwhile, Asyraf Wajdi said Umno is optimistic about recapturing the Tanjong Karang parliamentary seat in the 16th General Election (GE16). He said the seat is considered a priority after Umno's defeat in the last general election. 'To win, the formula is clear — we must return to Umno's core values: unity, loyalty and faith. Unity means there should be no factions within the party. 'Tanjong Karang was a seat we had never lost until the last general election. So, our focus is to make it one of the key seats to win back,' he said. In GE15, the Tanjong Karang seat was won by Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi of Perikatan Nasional with a majority of 2,180 when he polled 18,054 votes. Dr Zulkafperi, who is now an independent, beat BN's Datuk Habibah Mohd Yusof (15,874 votes) and PH's Siti Rahayu (12,314 votes). — Bernama
