How U.K. travel packager Jet2holidays is in the social media spotlight

Travel Weeklya day ago
Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday. That's according to the now-viral audio from U.K. tour operator Jet2holidays, which has found itself in the social media spotlight.
TikToks and Instagram Reels abound with audio from a January 2024 ad promoting a Jet2holidays deal that knocked 50 pounds (equal to about $67) per person off a package price. Set to a backing track from Jess Glynne's song "Hold My Hand," a voiceover cheerily begins: "Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday ...."
And it caught the attention of TikTok users, who began juxtaposing the audio clip with videos showing chaotic or unfortunate moments, whether travel-related or not.
Some viral examples of TikTokers using the trending audio include a video of a boater trying to enter Italy's Blue Grotto while the ocean waves repeatedly crash them against the rocks. Another shows a woman's hair catching fire as she leans forward to blow out her birthday candles.
According to a Forbes report, the most-liked video using the sound has accumulated 35 million likes on TikTok. In it, a person ostensibly in a hotel room throws open the floor-to-ceiling curtains only to be confronted with a tiny window.
The ad "sound" has been used 1.4 million times on TikTok; the original ad on YouTube has received 2.4 million views.
A British powerhouse travel packager
Jet2holidays may be a relatively unknown travel company to most U.S. travelers, but it calls itself the U.K.'s largest package holiday provider.
In its preliminary results for the fiscal year that ended in March and published July 9, Jet2 said it carried a record 19.8 million passengers and 6.6 million package-holiday customers.
It recorded 7.17 billion pounds in annual revenue, a 15% increase over the previous fiscal year.
Like other package-holiday operators in the U.K. such as TUI, Jet2 has its own hardware: It has a fleet of 135 aircraft and is planning to acquire 132 Airbus A321neo planes over the next 10 years. According to its financial statement, it works with more than 5,000 properties across more than 75 destinations.
It also works through travel advisors and is a member of the Association of British Travel Agents. In its financial report it noted that its annual advisor conferences bring together more than 350 of its top-selling travel agents, directors and senior management.
How Jet2 has leaned into the viral trend
Jet2 did not immediately respond to an inquiry about the viral ad.
The ad concept appears to go back as far as 2022, when Jet2 said it was launching a new series of adverts called "Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday." The ads featured the Glynne song, and "the message 'contact your local independent travel agent' continues at the heart of the multichannel campaign," it said.
But it has since referenced the trend. Earlier this year it unveiled a new version of the audio on TikTok and Instagram, promoting savings of about 400 pounds (about $540) for a family of four. The video amassed 1.4 million likes.
The company also used the trending audio to promote a contest to win a 1,000 pound (about $1,300) Jet2holidays voucher. TikTokers who used the new sound in a video were eligible to win the contest, which ran through May 19.
The operator also unveiled a discount code referencing the advertisement.
It is not the first time a travel brand has catapulted into the public eye because of a viral TikTok moment. A baby, dubbed the "Four Seasons Baby," went viral last year on TikTok after showing her excitement for the Four Seasons Orlando.

Department of Transport issues update on free bus passes for over 60s in England

Local councils in England "do have the power" to lower the age threshold for the older persons' bus pass, the UK Government has confirmed. But lowering the age would "need to be carefully considered for its impact on the scheme's financial sustainability." Surrey Heath representative MP Dr Al Pinkerton had queried whether an evaluation had been conducted on the "potential merits of extending free bus pass eligibility to people aged over 60," in a written response, the Daily Record reports. Given that concessionary travel falls under devolved jurisdiction, the qualifying age for complimentary bus journeys varies across Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. While Scots aged 60-plus enjoy this benefit, those residing in England typically receive it upon reaching State Pension age. Never miss a story with the MEN's daily Catch Up newsletter - get it in your inbox by signing up here It comes after a petition online calling for bus passengers in England to be given the same financial benefits as those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland received more than 100,000 signatures. Mr Lightwood said: 'The English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) provides free off-peak bus travel to those with eligible disabilities and those of state pension age, currently sixty-six. 'The ENCTS costs around £700 million annually and any changes to the statutory obligations, such as lowering the age of eligibility, would therefore need to be carefully considered for its impact on the scheme's financial sustainability. 'However, local authorities in England have the power to offer concessions in addition to their statutory obligations, such as lowering the age of eligibility. Additional local concessions are provided and funded by local authorities from local resources.' He also said that the UK Government has confirmed £955 million for the 2025/26 financial year to support and improve bus services in England outside London. This includes £243m for bus operators and £712m allocated to local authorities across the country. He added: 'Funding allocated to local authorities to improve services for passengers can be used in whichever way they wish. This could include extending the discretionary concessions available.' More than 101,200 people signed the online petition supporting calls for changes to be made to the ENCTS and bring it into line with the same service provided by the Scottish Government. Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE Petition creator Karen Hickman argues the current scheme is 'unjust' and calls for 'equality for everyone over 60'. The campaigner explained people in England, living outside London, are not entitled to free bus travel until they reach State Pension age - 66 for both men and women - which she believes has 'changed dramatically.' The 'extend free bus travel for people over 60 in England' petition states: 'We call on the Government to extend free bus travel to all people over 60 years old in England outside London. We believe the current situation is unjust and we want equality for everyone over 60. 'Currently, people in England who do not live in London are not entitled to free bus travel until they reach the state pension age, which we believe has changed dramatically. As people get older some over 60s drive less and less, therefore we believe we need equality on public transport. 'It would mean England had the same provision as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.'

Liverpool sign forward Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt

Liverpool completed the signing of striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday for a reported £69 million ($92 million) as the Premier League champions continued their summer spending spree. "The 23-year-old has successfully completed a medical and agreed personal terms with the Reds, allowing him to fly out to Hong Kong to join his new teammates on their pre-season tour of Asia later this week," Liverpool said in a statement. The deal taking the France Under-21 international to Anfield is set to push Liverpool's spending past £250m this summer. Liverpool switched their focus to Ekitike following Newcastle's refusal to sell Sweden striker Alexander Isak, who is valued at around £150 million by the Magpies. Newcastle and Manchester United were also interested in Ekitike, but Liverpool have won the race for one of Europe's hottest young stars. It is believed the Reds have agreed to pay a potential further £10 million in add-ons to sign Ekitike, whose overall price tag could reach £79 million. Ekitike scored 22 goals in 48 games in all competitions for Frankfurt last season after joining the Bundesliga club from Paris Saint-Germain. He was named in the Bundesliga team of the season as Frankfurt finished third in Germany last term. Liverpool have an opening in their forward line after Diogo Jota's recent death in a car crash in Spain. The Reds are also believed to be willing to sell Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez, while Colombia forward Luis Diaz has been the target of a rejected bid from Bayern Munich. Liverpool have already splashed out £116 million on Germany playmaker Florian Wirtz, as well as signing defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez from Bayer Leverkusen and Bournemouth respectively. Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has also linked up with Arne Slot's side since the end of last season after agreeing his move from Valencia in 2024. Ekitike began his career with his hometown club Reims and had a brief loan spell in Denmark in 2021 before earning a move to PSG the following year. He struggled to make an impact in his first season in Paris alongside the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, but claimed a Ligue 1 winner's medal. His opportunities were again limited at the start of the 2023-24 campaign before he joined Frankfurt on loan. "Hugo has improved tremendously in his 18 months with us and has been a real asset to our team and the club as a whole on and off the pitch," said Eintracht sporting director Markus Krosche. "We're delighted he can now take the next step – a step he has earned through his performances with us." mw/ea

Cleared City traders blame 'purge' as they hit out at rate-rigging prosecutions

The city traders wrongfully convicted in the aftermath of the financial crisis have spoken out about their decade-long battle for justice, claiming they were scapegoats. Tom Hayes was the first of nine traders to prosecuted by the Serious Fraud Office. In 2012, he was accused of rigging Libor - an interest rate on loans and financial contracts that was used throughout the financial system. The rate was determined daily, based on submissions from several large banks. Money latest: Mr Hayes was originally sentenced to 14 years in jail, one of the toughest sentences ever handed out for white collar crime. He served more than five years in prison, including at the high security prison Belmarsh. Speaking to Sky News after the Supreme Court overturned the conviction, Mr Hayes said: "I came out [of prison] to a son who was nine years old who I left when he was three. My marriage broke down whilst I was in prison. My mental health broke down while I was in prison." Mr Hayes said he was made responsible for damage caused by the financial crisis. "There was this zeitgeist that existed where they wanted to send bankers to prison... we were unlucky," he said. He was joined by Carlo Palombo, who was convicted in 2019 for rigging Euribor, the Euro Libor rate. Mr Palombo said he spent most of his days in a small cell that he shared with another inmate at Wandsworth Prison. He said he was the victim of a "purge" by banks and regulators as they sought to absolve themselves of the consequences of the crash. "The stuff of which I was accused and convicted was something that was done completely openly by absolutely every single person… it was just a normal business practice of the bank," he said. Supreme Court judges said the two men did not receive fair trials because the juries were misdirected in the original cases. Essentially, they had been told their behaviour was dishonest without reaching that conclusion themselves. Both men are now trying to move on with their lives. Mr Hayes said he wanted to move to the sea and rebuild his family.
