In a move set to bolster people's trust in the public healthcare system, Karimnagar Collector Pamela Satpathy underwent Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) along with Septoplasty at the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Karimnagar on Sunday (June 15, 2025) evening.
Ms. Satpathy, a 2015-batch IAS officer, has drawn praise from various quarters for her inspirational act to encourage people to make use of the expertise of doctors and healthcare services in the government hospitals.
Earlier, there have been instances of the officers or their family members opting for government hospitals for childbirth. This is one of the rare instances when a bureaucrat opted for a government health facility for a surgery.
Ms. Satpathy has been suffering from headaches, nasal issues and sinusitis for the past few months. When the symptoms of sinusitis got aggravated, she opted for the surgery at the GGH in Karimnagar, sources said
She was operated upon by a team of ENT surgeons under the supervision of the hospital superintendent G. Veera Reddy. The surgery lasted for around one and a half hour and she was kept under post-operative observation after surgery, hospital sources added.
Meanwhile, Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha appreciated Ms. Satpathy for setting an inspiring example by choosing to undergo FESS along with Septoplasty at the GGH, Karimnagar.
In a post on 'X' on Monday, the minister commended the medical superintendent and the team of ENT surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff and support personnel for successfully performing the complex procedure at the GGH.
He praised the collector for being a role model in promoting the use of quality healthcare services available in government hospitals and wished her a speedy and complete recovery.

Two years on, no action on government doctor indicted in Balveer Singh case

TIRUNELVELI: Over 27 months have passed since the commission, set up to investigate the custodial torture case involving former ASP Balveer Singh, submitted a report suggesting action against a government doctor, but the state is yet to act on it. In an interim report submitted to the government on April 19, 2023, the commission led by IAS officer P Amudha, recommended action against Dr Jaishankar of Ambasamudram Government Hospital, who allegedly issued 'nil injury' certificates to six custodial torture victims, including those with visibly missing teeth and other injuries. Amudha's report stated, 'When the accused were taken by police to Ambasamudram GH, Medical officer Dr Jaishankar did not record the injuries in the medical memo and mentioned 'nil injury' for all six persons. He also failed to maintain the Casualty Register. However, injuries such as blood clots on thighs and back, swollen faces and lips were documented in the Palayamkottai Prison Health Screening Memo. This clearly shows gross negligence on the part of the doctor in recording injuries and issuing untrue fitness certificates.' She recommended strict action for the serious dereliction of duty. Dr Jaishankar still continues to serve at the Ambasamudram GH with no disciplinary action taken so far. When contacted, Tirunelveli Joint Director of Health Services Dr Latha claimed she had not received any communication regarding the inquiry findings from the directorate. Repeated attempts to contact Health Secretary P Senthilkumar and Director of Medical and Rural Health Services Dr J Rajamoorthy went unanswered.

Int'l AIDS forum kicks off in Rwanda's capital

Kigali, July 14 (UNI) The 13th International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Science officially opened Monday in the Rwandan capital of Kigali, with a strong call to accelerate access to long-acting HIV prevention and treatment innovations amid growing global funding challenges. The event, themed "Breakthroughs amid Crisis: the Future of HIV Innovation," has convened about 4,000 participants, including global leaders, researchers, scientists, and civil society members. Speaking at the conference, Rwandan Minister of Health Sabin Nsanzimana said that Rwanda's experience in the HIV response over the past few decades demonstrates what is possible when countries prioritize people-centered approaches and invest in strategic partnerships. "We have better tools for prevention and treatment. We have better ways to engage our communities to fight stigma and discrimination, and better integration within our systems. This means we can not only achieve HIV control, but we also need to strengthen our health systems," he added. IAS President Beatriz Grinsztein underlined new World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, groundbreaking licensing agreements, and promising research as signs that long-acting HIV prevention and treatment options are becoming more feasible for widespread use. "Our next challenge is clear: leaders must commit the funding and resources needed to integrate these scientific advances into health systems quickly and equitably so that people everywhere can benefit from these life-changing options," Grinsztejn emphasized. At the event, the WHO issued a statement announcing new guidelines that recommend using injectable lenacapavir twice a year as an additional pre-exposure prophylaxis option for HIV prevention -- a landmark policy action that could help reshape the global HIV response. "While an HIV vaccine remains elusive, lenacapavir is the next best thing: a long-acting antiretroviral shown in trials to prevent almost all HIV infections among those at risk," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is quoted as saying in the statement. The IAS Conference on HIV Science is recognized as the world's most influential meeting on HIV research and its applications. Its 2025 edition, which runs until Thursday, features hundreds of sessions and presentations focused on translating scientific breakthroughs into real-world impact, with a particular emphasis on solutions for regions and populations most affected by HIV.
