Major charity shop with 262 branches to close site in DAYS as huge clearance sale launched

The Sun12-05-2025
A MAJOR charity shop with over 250 branches is set to close a key high street store in days - leaving locals gutted.
Age UK will close its Silsden store in West Yorkshire at the end of the week, bringing an end to 32 years of trading in the town.

The owner posted on the Facebook group Silsden Gossip last week: "Just a reminder that the Age UK closing down sale (50%) off starts tomorrow.
"17th of May is our last trading day and we are not accepting further donations from today as we have plenty of stock to still get out.
"It's very sad and the end of an era for our community but let's go out with a bang."
In a separate post on the group Silsden Buzz, the owner thanked locals for their support and donations, adding that they "are no longer accepting donations".
charity shop's closure.
One shopper wrote: "I always loved this shop, both as a customer, and donated, really sad you are closing, such a shame, you will be missed."
Another commented: "It's very sad to see you all go, love a little rummage once a week!
"A town without a charity shop is just wrong.
"Thank you for all your hard work over the years and take care."
A third shopper wrote: "Thank you for taking my donations over the years, you will be sadly missed."

Age UK is a leading charity dedicated to supporting older people.
It runs a nationwide chain of charity shops to raise funds for its services for older adults.
These stores sell a variety of donated items, including clothing, books, homeware and accessories, with all proceeds going towards the charity's work.
It comes as Age UK closed its shop in West Bridgford at the end of August.
A post on the branch's Facebook page reads: "The last day of trading for our West Bridgford shop will be August 30.
"We want to take this opportunity to thank our staff, volunteers, customers for their support and donations."
We've contacted Age UK to confirm the closure.
Reacting to the news on social media, one shopper said: "Have had many a bargain from there, will miss it, its the best one around."
Another said: "I always love the window displays. They really brighten my day."
"The best charity shop in West Bridgford!
"Spotlessly clean, lovely staff and great window displays. Sorry to see it go," said a third shopper.
Age UK also closed one of its charity shops in Dereham's Yaxham Road back in February.
Why are retailers closing shops?
EMPTY shops have become an eyesore on many British high streets and are often symbolic of a town centre's decline.
The Sun's business editor Ashley Armstrong explains why so many retailers are shutting their doors.
In many cases, retailers are shutting stores because they are no longer the money-makers they once were because of the rise of online shopping.
Falling store sales and rising staff costs have made it even more expensive for shops to stay open. In some cases, retailers are shutting a store and reopening a new shop at the other end of a high street to reflect how a town has changed.
The problem is that when a big shop closes, footfall falls across the local high street, which puts more shops at risk of closing.
Retail parks are increasingly popular with shoppers, who want to be able to get easy, free parking at a time when local councils have hiked parking charges in towns.
Many retailers including Next and Marks & Spencer have been shutting stores on the high street and taking bigger stores in better-performing retail parks instead.
Boss Stuart Machin recently said that when it relocated a tired store in Chesterfield to a new big store in a retail park half a mile away, its sales in the area rose by 103 per cent.
In some cases, stores have been shut when a retailer goes bust, as in the case of Wilko, Debenhams Topshop, Dorothy Perkins and Paperchase to name a few.
What's increasingly common is when a chain goes bust a rival retailer or private equity firm snaps up the intellectual property rights so they can own the brand and sell it online.
They may go on to open a handful of stores if there is customer demand, but there are rarely ever as many stores or in the same places.

Telecoms boss lands record £131m payday

The boss of a little-known UK telecoms business was handed a record £131m last year, marking the highest-ever package paid by a London-listed business. Eamonn O'Hare, who runs Zegona Communications, received a £129m bonus in 2024, on top of £2m in annual pay and benefits. The company's operations chief, Robert Samuelson, also took home a total package of £66m. By contrast, the average remuneration for an FTSE 100 chief executive last year was £4.2m. The lucrative pay awards were made after Zegona acquired Vodafone's Spanish arm for £4.4bn last year. Mr O'Hare and Mr Samuelson, both former Virgin Media executives, launched Zegona a decade ago to buy up struggling assets in the telecoms sector and turn them around. Zegona went public in 2015 with a float on London's AIM junior exchange, when it raised £30m. However, its value has since soared after undertaking a series of deals, buying up unloved assets and selling them on for profit.

Bank a tidy profit by swerving the Big Four: Our shares guru's expert advice on the smaller fish financial firms to invest in - including one that's up 80% since she first tipped it two years ago

Banks are a bit of a hobby horse for me. My first job in journalism involved international banking and finance; I was a banking correspondent for years, and I've maintained a keen interest in the industry ever since. It's been a bumpy ride, particularly for the so-called Big Four – Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and NatWest. Pummelled by the Global Financial Crisis, prodded and poked by online start-ups and squeezed by years of low interest rates, mainstream lenders disappointed investors for years.

Luis Diaz to LEAVE Liverpool tour as Bayern Munich agree £65million deal to bolster Reds' Alexander Isak kitty

LIVERPOOL are set to bank an extra £65million for their Alexander Isak fund after Bayern Munich agreed to sign Luis Diaz. The Reds winger told Arne Slot earlier this summer that he wanted to explore a move away from Anfield. 3 Diaz, 28, is in Asia with Liverpool on their pre-season tour but was left out of the squad for their friendly against AC Milan. Slot later confirmed that the forward had been left out due to speculation over his future. And now Liverpool have given Diaz permission to leave the tour after agreeing a deal with Bayern. The Premier League champion's twice failed in attempts to convince Diaz into signing a new deal. The sale, with Darwin Nunez also expected to leave this summer, will help raise funds for the Premier League champions to continue their incredible spending spree. Liverpool have already spent £201m since winning the title, including a club-record £100m deal for Florian Wirtz, who was a target for Bayern. Despite also landing French striker Hugo Ekitike, an audacious move for Isak cannot be ruled out. The £120m-rated Swede has been left out of Newcastle's pre-season tour to Singapore having also been sent home from their training camp in Scotland. Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, has informed the Magpies of his desire to move this summer. However, Eddie Howe and the Saudi Arabian owners are digging their heels in and insist their star man is not for sale. Liverpool, though, are considering testing that resolve with a bid and will be in a stronger position with Diaz sold. Vincent Kompany wanted to add a forward following Thomas Muller's departure and Jamal Musiala's horrific leg and ankle break during the Club World Cup. Diaz was a target for Barcelona before they landed Marcus Rashford, while the German giants had already seen one bid rejected. While Liverpool are still exploring forward options, Slot has insisted he is happy with his three centre-backs after Jarrell Quansah was sold to Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds hold an interest in Marc Guehi but have not lodged a formal approach for the Crystal Palace captain. Slot said: 'I don't think we have a concern at centre-back. "In terms of depth? I think Ryan [Gravenberch] showed against Milan that he can play in that position. "He did it last season as well. Although we all know we favour him as a No 6. Wata [Endo] can play there. Joe Gomez only has a minor injury.' 3
