KUALA LUMPUR - 'Mirugasirisham: The Orion', a Malaysian Tamil horror-comedy, has carved its name in local film history as the first Tamil-language production to feature Dolby Atmos sound technology.
Directed by Vijay Ganesh and produced by Dr Sai Suthan Krishnan under Fivestar AV, the film follows a family entangled in a web of paranormal mysteries. Seeking answers, they turn to a spiritual guru, portrayed by Vijay himself. "'Mirugasirisham' represents our commitment to elevating local storytelling through technological innovation and heartfelt performances,' Vijay told Bernama after attending a pre-recording session of Bernama Tamil News talk show 'Paarvai' at Wisma Bernama here, recently.
The movie cast includes Joshua Shashi Kumar, Jegan Shanmugam, Nirmala Tharmarajan, Kumari and Komalaa Naaidu, with music composed by Shane Xtreme.
Subtitled in Malay and English to broaden its reach, 'Mirugasirisham' has generated positive buzz across social media, reflecting growing interest in Malaysian Tamil cinema.
Despite the momentum, Vijay admitted that local films still face challenges in cinema attendance, partly due to the average ticket price of RM20.
"Cinema outings can be expensive for many families, especially those from the B40 community. We believe lowering ticket prices could help attract more viewers to support homegrown films,' he said.
Vijay also urged the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) and relevant government bodies to extend greater support, including funding and production collaboration, to help filmmakers focus on creativity and quality.
"With the right partnerships and resources, we are confident Malaysian Tamil cinema can grow stronger and we can continue sharing our unique stories with pride,' he added. - BERNAMA

But it is now becoming a reality for the celebrated Indonesian star, widely known as BCL. Having long admired the vocal strength of the first Malaysian Idol winner, BCL said she could not contain her excitement when the Gemilang singer finally agreed to perform at her concert this September. At a recent press conference here to announce her BCL: Eternal Love – Timeless Romance concert, BCL described the opportunity to share the stage with Jaclyn as "deeply meaningful and a great honour'. ALSO READ: Indonesian diva and pop princess Bunga Citra Lestari all set to bring her love tunes to KLCC on Sept 27 "I've actually been a fan of Jaclyn for a long time. When she started singing at this event (the press conference), I nearly cried. "She has a powerful yet gentle voice. I think she is one of the greatest singers in Asia," she said. Organised by Pulse Project Asia, the concert will take the audience and fans on a journey through BCL's musical career, featuring a collection of love songs and meaningful ballads. The show will be held at the Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, on Sept 27. Declaring that she cannot wait to meet her fans in Malaysia again after her last visit in 2023 for her Blossom Intimate Concert, BCL said her upcoming performance will not only be about music but also the emotional connection between Indonesia and Malaysia. "I'm honestly very nervous because I'll be surrounded by such talented people. "But I hope this concert will bring the two countries closer together and create a fun and meaningful experience for everyone," she said. Meanwhile, Jaclyn said she was touched upon learning that BCL was a fan. "I honestly didn't know whether she even knew who I was. We've met a few times, but never really had a proper conversation," she said. Jaclyn, who has won numerous awards, including at the Eighth Shanghai Asia Music Festival, said when she received the invitation to sing at BCL's concert about a month or two ago, she agreed without hesitation out of respect for the Indonesian singer's stature in the regional music industry. "She's a big name, not just in Indonesia but also in Malaysia. So why not? In fact, I really like the concept of her show," she said. As for the songs she will be performing, she said discussions are still ongoing and she has not received any specific song requests from the organisers. Malaysian electric violinist and music producer Dennis Lau will also appear as a guest performer. – Bernama

Borneo floral fest in Labuan off to a vibrant start
LABUAN: The Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) 2025 got off to a vibrant start on the first day, attracting a total of 37,130 visitors, says Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa ( pic ). The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) said the impressive figure was recorded through the artificial intelligence-based closed circuit television monitoring system operated by the Labuan Corporation that is used to manage crowd flow and ensure visitor safety throughout the five-day event. 'Crowd response is overwhelming and reflects the growing popularity of the BFF as a premier tourism and cultural attraction in Labuan,' she said after visiting the event yesterday. Dr Zaliha added that the festival not only brings colour and joy to the island but also serves as an economic catalyst, especially for local businesses. 'With more than 37,000 visitors in just one day, we are already seeing the economic spillover. Hoteliers, food stalls, local artisans and even home-based entrepreneurs are benefiting tremendously from this influx,' she said, Bernama reported. This year's BFF 2025 with the theme 'Borneo Tropical Flora' features, among others, floral parades, garden installations and dance and music performances.

Sheila Majid pays tribute to parents for career
DATUK Sheila Majid has paid tribute to her parents, saying their blessing for her was the key to her 40 years as a singer, Mingguan Malaysia reported. She spoke of the early days when she 'strategised' in seeking her late father's approval. 'Though my father was not harsh, he was strict and very old school. If he said no, it meant no.' Sheila was a mere teenager awaiting her SPM results when she got an offer to sing. 'I was the youngest of eight children. And a girl. My father would surely said no.' Her father eventually gave in, and little did she know this would evolve into a four-decade career. To mark the occasion, Sheila will hold a concert in Kuala Lumpur in November. > He carved a name as a mural artist after graduating in Fine Arts and Design from Universiti Teknologi Mara Shah Alam. However, for the past three years, Mohamad Haris Hilmi Norhasram, 30, has been crafting food replicas using materials like air-dry clay, acrylic paint and epoxy resin. While most of his orders come from restaurant owners who use the replicas as food displays, he would also get commissions from people looking for memorable gifts, Kosmo! Ahad reported. A replica of a bowl of pulled noodles or a chicken rice dish can fetch between RM80 and RM100, depending on the intricacy and detail involved, he said.
