Ongoing investigation after taxi rank altercation in Guernsey
Police have launched an investigation after several people were assaulted at a taxi rank in Guernsey.Bailiwick Law Enforcement said the altercation happened between 02:00 and 02:30 BST on Saturday at the Weighbridge Taxi Rank in St Peter Port. "Arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing," police said."If you have witnessed this incident or have any information that could assist the investigation, you are asked to contact the Criminal Investigation Department at Police Headquarters."

The 20-year-old is said to have aspired to become a firefighter before the attack on Sunday, which saw him allegedly perched in a sniper position, firing at the firefighters as they sought to put out a fire, which authorities believe he intentionally started. Two firefighters were killed and one was injured as they came under gunfire over several hours, according to authorities. They said the incident took place after they asked him to move his vehicle. Roley was later found dead in the mountains with a firearm nearby. Sky News' US partner network NBC quoted Roley's grandfather,Dale Roley, as saying "something must have snapped" in his grandson for him to commit such violence. "He actually really respected law enforcement," Mr Roley said. "He loved firefighters. It didn't make sense that he was shooting firefighters. Maybe he got rejected or something." Mr Roley added: "I know he had been in contact to get a job with a fire department. "He wanted to be part of a team that he sort of idolised." Bob Norris, the sheriff of Kootenai County, said on Sunday: "We do believe that the suspect started the fire. "This was a total ambush. These firefighters did not have a chance." Officers said they were "taking sniper fire" near the city of Coeur d'Alene on Sunday afternoon, with crews responding to a fire at Canfield Mountain. Mr Norris said the gunman had used high-powered sporting rifles to fire rapidly at first responders. The ambush continued for several hours. More than 300 officers from city, county, state and federal levels responded. Two helicopters were deployed with snipers onboard. First responders could be heard making urgent calls for help on their radios. "Everybody's shot up here... send law enforcement now," one dispatch said. Later, the sheriff's office said members of a SWAT team "located a deceased male on Canfield Mountain", adding that a "firearm was found nearby".

Hawaii 's governor on Monday signed five bills cracking down on the rampant use of illegal fireworks in the islands after a massive explosion at a New Year's party killed six people and severely burned more than a dozen others. The new laws take effect immediately. Police will be authorized to issue $300 tickets to those who shoot off fireworks, while repeat offenders and those whose actions cause serious injury or death could get prison time for felony crimes. 'If (a) firework goes off and you have it illegally and you blow somebody up, honestly, you're gonna go to jail for 20 years,' Gov. Josh Green said at a bill signing ceremony. 'No joke. So don't do it.' State and county officials have long struggled to contain illegal fireworks in Hawaii, where it's become common for people to launch professional-grade aerial explosives from the streets in front of their homes. The reforms aim to allow police to quickly address minor infractions and focus their investigations on higher-level cases. 'We have to, once and for all, stop this for the safety of our children and the people we love,' Green said. He urged people to enjoy public fireworks shows instead. Another measure appropriates $2 million to the state Department of Law Enforcement for an explosives and firearms laboratory and $500,000 for undercover fireworks sting operations. Over New Year's, crates of illegal fireworks ignited and set off a chain of explosions during a party in a Honolulu residential neighborhood. The injured filled the state's lone burn care unit, forcing the transport of some victims to Arizona for treatment. Authorities seized 500 pounds (227 kilograms) of unused fireworks from the scene. Police have so far arrested 10 people in connection with the explosion. Authorities accused them of reckless endangering, endangering the welfare of a minor and multiple fireworks offenses. The Honolulu prosecutor's office said its investigation into the allegations is ongoing.

Inmate fatally shoots North Carolina officer before being caught in stolen vehicle, sheriff says
A federal inmate escaped from custody at a medical clinic in western North Carolina and fatally shot a detention officer with his own gun Monday, then fled in a stolen vehicle before being captured in another county, a sheriff said. The inmate had been taken to an orthopedics office in Murphy for undisclosed treatment when a scuffle began. The inmate took the officer's weapon and shot him, Cherokee County Sheriff Dustin Smith said at a news conference. The inmate ran into the parking lot, jumped into a vehicle that had just arrived and took off. The inmate was later apprehended in Macon County, nearly an hour to the east, Smith said. Smith said the inmate, Kelvin Simmons, 48, will be charged with first-degree murder. The detention officer was identified as Francisco Paul Flattes, 56, a four-year employee of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Smith said Flattes' wife also works for the county detention center. Another officer suffered injuries unrelated to the shooting and was recovering, the sheriff said. 'This has been probably one of the worst days of my career,' Smith said. Emergency personnel in Clay County had alerted Macon County deputies that the inmate was driving to their county on U.S. Route 64, authorities said. Simmons' vehicle was stopped and he was detained after a short standoff. There were no injuries at the scene. Smith said Simmons was already being held on bank robbery charges along with an October 2024 escape.
