‘Bengalis Facing Oppression': Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek To Give 2026 Roadmap At TMC Rally Tomorrow
The Trinamool Congress's (TMC) Martyrs' Day rally on July 21, the last such rally before the 2026 West Bengal elections, will be crucial for many reasons. The message given by party supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee are likely to set the tone for the party's strategy.
Speaking to the media on Sunday evening, Banerjee said: 'There is constant oppression of Bengalis for speaking their language. We will not tolerate this oppression."
'I thank all of you, including the administration and the media. Many of my colleagues have come here from distant places and are staying at the camp, I thank them for their dedication. More than a lakh people have already arrived. Due to the release of water and heavy rainfall, many areas are waterlogged. Yet, despite these challenges, people have come here to pay their respects to the martyrs," the TMC chief said.
'During the CPI(M) era, they didn't allow people to vote. Buildings were locked to prevent voting. We launched a massive movement, and despite all their efforts, the CPI(M) couldn't stop it. They opened fire and 13 people were killed and over 200 injured. Our demand was simple: no ID card, no vote. Now, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) doesn't allow people to vote in double-engine states," she said.
Martyrs' Day is TMC's annual mega rally commemorating the 1993 incident when 13 workers were killed in police firing during Banerjee's movement for EPIC cards. Since then, the TMC has observed this day to remember the martyrs, and Banerjee traditionally uses this platform to announce the party's political agenda for the year.
Insiders say that this year, Banerjee is expected to outline the roadmap for the 2026 elections while addressing thousands of party workers from the stage.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has planned a gherao of the North Bengal Secretariat to protest against what it calls the 'worsening law and order situation in the state". This is also the first time the court has imposed restrictions on the rally, following a petition citing potential traffic disruptions.

Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam attack: Although the TMC has supported the central government's decisions on dealing with Pakistan and even sent Abhishek as part of an international delegation, the party has raised several questions on the issue. Women's issues, from RG Kar to Kasba rape allegations: Despite being a woman Chief Minister and despite schemes like Lakshmir Bhandar that have earned the party significant support among women voters, the TMC has faced embarrassment over incidents like the RG Kar case and the Kasba rape allegations. AIADMK assails Congress, allies for bringing in caste dimension to Cabinet shuffle
AIADMK secretary A. Anbalagan said neither the Congress nor its allies had any right to rake up the replacement of the only Dalit Minister in the Puducherry NDA Cabinet when the Ministries of their past governments had no representation of marginalised communities. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Anbalagan condemned what he alleged were attempts of the Congress and its allies to drive a wedge between communities on the basis of caste for electoral gain. The AIADMK leader said though two Ministers, one from the BJP and the other from the AINRC, had been replaced for various reasons disconnected from their community background, the Congress was trying to create a controversy by injecting a caste dimension to these decisions taken by the leadership of the respective parties. He dismissed as an outright lie the Congress's claim that the Chief Minister Rangasamy-led AINRC-BJP coalition was the only government to not have Ministers from the Scheduled Castes community. Mr. Anbalagan proceeded to list list previous Congress Ministries, including the governments headed by the three-time Chief Minister M.O.H. Farook in 1985 or V. Vaithilingam later. Even the coalition government led by DMK Chief Minister R.V. Janakiraman (1996-99) did not have representation from these communities, he said. Both the Congress and the DMK are conveniently forgetting this history in their pretence of advocating for the Dalit communities, he added. Mr. Anbalagan said he would seek the party leadership's concurrence for petitioning the Election Commission of India to probe the declared election expenditure of the CPI(M) in Tamil Nadu to contest the 2024 general election. The CPM, which had received ₹10 crore donation from the DMK, has claimed that the money was used for electioneering in the two victorious Parliamentary constituencies. INTUC asks Centre for invitation to tripartite meetings, blames Air India crash on privatisation
The working committee of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), the trade union arm of the Congress, which met here on Sunday (July 20, 2025), has resolved to question the Centre's decision not to invite it to various tripartite panels. Pointing to last month's deadly Air India crash in Ahmedabad, INTUC said it was proof that the policy of privatisation is a serious threat to the life and safety of the common people. 'Since 2017, the INTUC has been denied representation on boards and committees constituted by the Ministry of Labour & Employment and important consultations to discuss even the Labour Codes and representation in International Labour Conferences of the International Labour Organisation, which is a discriminatory attitude towards the INTUC,' the resolution said. Cooperatives for modern times The committee noted that cooperatives can be spaces of mutual aid and collective decision-making, aligned with union values of worker empowerment. 'The lives of the deceased cannot be valued by just giving compensation, especially in those cases where the entire family has perished. The Government has not announced any kind of relief,' the committee said. 'This accident is enough to tell that when the important public services of the country like Airports, Railways, Electricity, Road transport, Health, Security etc. are handed over to private hands, then their purpose becomes only profit-making. Not public service, and security, accountability and transparency become secondary,' it added.
