Jasper Philipsen, one of the world's best sprinters, is out of the Tour de France. A heavy crash is the Belgian's undoing - not unusual for the traditionally hectic first week of the race.
You can almost set your watch by it. The first week of the Tour de France almost never goes by without serious crashes and on the third stage of the 2025 Tour, Belgian Jasper Philipsen, who was wearing the green jersey (the best sprinter), was hit.
Frenchman Bryan Coquard skidded at around 60 km/h during an intermediate sprint, and Philipsen, who was riding next to him, was unable to avoid him and crashed onto the asphalt. Philipsen, who had won the first stage and even wore the leader's yellow jersey for a day, broke his collarbone and at least one rib. The 27-year-old's Tour is now over, and Swiss rider Stefan Bissegger and Italian Filippo Ganna had already had to abandon the race after crashing during the opening stage.
"The first week is probably the most dangerous, because everyone thinks they can make cycling history," said former rider Rolf Aldag, now sports director of the German team Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. "In the second or third week, everyone knows where they belong. Then they pull back and slow down."
There are a total of seven flat stages in this year's Tour de France, and most of them are in the first week. That adds to the pressure of the first week for those looking to go fast because in the difficult mountain stages in the Pyrenees and the Alps later in the race, the sprinters are only concerned with reaching the finish within the prescribed time window. The goal is to still be in contention for the final stage on the Champs Élysées, which is usually decided in a sprint.
The third stage from Valenciennes to Dunkirk had actually started at a leisurely pace - as the author was able to see for himself at the edge of the route in the small town of Seclin: The peloton rolled along at a slow pace, even the usual breakaway attempts by individual riders failed to materialize due to the strong winds. But at the only sprint classification of the day, 60 kilometers before the finish in Dunkirk, the crash occurred.
Two more were to follow, the last one during the final sprint, when several sprinters landed on the asphalt. Unlike Philipsen, they escaped with grazes. "After the World Championships, the Tour is the biggest thing you can achieve as a professional cyclist. That's why the willingness to take risks is extremely high here," said German sprinter Phil Bauhaus, who finished third in Dunkirk.
"We rode through hell," said Eritrean Biniam Girmay, who won three stages and the green jersey in 2024. "I'm just super happy that I arrived safely. Whenever I heard a crash behind me, my heart rate went up to 300."
In order to control the risk of falling, the UCI (cycling's world governing body) introduced yellow cards at the beginning of the year - similar to football. Sprinters can be warned if they "deviate from the chosen line and thus hinder or endanger another rider" or if they brake suddenly during a sprint.
In these cases, a fine of 500 Swiss francs (€535) will be handed out as well as a deduction of points in the classification for the best sprinter. A second yellow card during a race results in a seven-day ban. For a multi-week tour such as the Tour de France, this means disqualification.
Another new feature this year is that the finish zone can be extended from three to five kilometers before the finish line in flat stages where sprints are expected for the stage win. If a professional cyclist crashes within this zone, he will be counted with the same time as the group in which he was riding at the time of the crash. This means that they do not lose any time in the overall standings as a result of the crash, but they still have to cross the finish line somehow.

Baumgartner, who had a tattoo on his right arm reading "born to fly," regularly posted videos of his paragliding flights on social media. He once described his passion for adventure with the words: "I belong to the air, I was born for these emotions." In recent years, he made headlines of a different sort with controversial political statements, criticizing German and Austrian migration policies and opining that a "moderate dictatorship" would be preferable to a democracy, in which "you can't move anything." In 2016, he recommended Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for the Nobel Peace Prize and endorsed a right-wing populist candidate for the Austrian presidency.

Norway's Jonas Abrahamsen won stage 11 of the Tour de France in Toulouse on Wednesday while defending champion Tadej Pogacar emerged largely unscathed despite crashing 4km from the line. Pogacar fell after hitting the back wheel of another rider but his rivals Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel sportingly waited for the Slovenian to catch up after he got back on his bike. Ireland's Ben Healy retained the leader's jersey. Pogacar sheepishly laughed off the tumble. "I'm a bit beaten up, I've been through worse days, but yeah that was unexpected," he said. He was also swift to thank his rivals. "Big respect," he said of the gesture. "The race was nearly over but I doubt I would have been able to catch up." Pogacar said he had feared the worst when another rider rode across the front of him. "He completely cut me off. I saw my head going toward the sidewalk and I was worried I'd get hurt. Luckily I've just lost some skin," said the three-time champion. Norway's Tobias Johannessen was the rider in question and apologised for the incident. "I am terribly sorry for what happened," he wrote on X. "I was trying to follow a move and I can see that I was too close," he added. "I made a mistake... I hope he is as good as he can be after a crash like that." Pogacar said he felt the fall would hurt him on Thursday's mountain stage. "We are ready as a team for Hautacam," he said of the main obstacle on stage 12. "But a day after a fall like that you are never at your best." Healy was next to Pogacar when he fell and narrowly missed coming down with him. "I didn't see him fall. I'll be honest I was looking somewhere else. That's possibly what happened to him," said the 24-year-old Healy, who took the lead at the end of stage 10 in the Massif Central. Healy retained the overall lead on his first day in the fabled yellow jersey, while Pogacar remains second at 29sec and Evenepoel third, another minute off the pace. The peloton next heads into the Pyrenees where the first real mountains will test their legs on the legendary Hautacam climb. "I'm not sure I'll still have the lead tomorrow night," said Healy. "It's a large task but I'll fight all the way. Either way this has been a real whirlwind for me." Anyone who expected a quiet day was instead treated to a thrilling stage over 156.8km from Toulouse and back, which was unexpectedly won by Abrahamsen. Abrahamsen also won the combativity award as he was at the origin of the long-range breakaway that foiled the ambitions of the sprinters. Abrahamsen then contested a cat-and-mouse duel down the home straight with Swiss Mauro Schmid as the cunning Mathieu van der Poel crept up on them and finished third at 7sec. The Norwegian fractured a collarbone two weeks before the Tour. "Thanks to the team who did everything to get me ready in time," said the Uno-X rider. "They are very good people and I've been here since 2017. "I like to have pain in my legs, I've been like this since I was 15," said Abrahamsen. Following Tuesday's rest day, Wednesday's run was billed as a likely sprint finish with 70 points at stake in the sprint standings in Toulouse. The stage did however feature five small climbs along the route making sure it was constantly fast and nerve-wracking. When Pogacar fell late on he struggled to put his chain on after sliding across several metres of tarmac, and it looked initially as if he would lose 30 to 40 seconds. Diminutive French climber Lenny Martinez is in the king of the mountains polka dot jersey as the race heads into the Pyrenees and will be the focus for home fans all weekend with further blockbuster crowds expected. With a fair bit of wizardry on the pitch, Belgium became the first European country to win the quidditch world cup on Sunday. The sport, known as quadball officially since 2022, is originally inspired by the game played by Harry Potter and his schoolmates in the famed books by J.K. Rowling. Instead of the magical broomsticks in the stories, quadball involves players running around with sticks between their legs and trying to throw balls through hoops. This year -- 31 teams from Latin America to Africa to Vietnam -- competed in Tubize, Belgium for the title of world champions in the sixth edition of the tournament. Belgium saw off Germany in the final by 170 to 90 in front of around 2,000 spectators at a local football stadium. "It's an indescribable feeling," Belgian player Seppe De Wit, who has been involved with the sport for 12 years, told AFP. "I'm proud of how we managed together, and it's going to be one of the best day of my life." The United States has traditionally dominated in the sport, claiming the world title four times. Players and authorities in the sport have in recent years been pushing to have the sport move on from its roots in the Harry Potter franchise and be taken more seriously as a discipline in its own right. The sport -- which has mixed teams -- has also sought to distance itself from Rowling's outspoken views on transgender rights and her view that biological sex is immutable. She denies being transphobic, but her position on the subject has made her a hate figure among many transgender rights campaigners. Organisers at the three-day tournament -- the biggest held since it was launched in 2012 -- insisted that they remained open to all participants. "It's really refreshing to be able to be a part of a community that when I come here, I feel like I can be open and I can talk to anyone and not have to worry about the gender of the person that I'm dating," said Japan team captain Leo Makoto Yazaki Levine. "I can just be myself without having to hide any part of me."
