A 35-year-old man from KwaMashu has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Ntuzuma Regional Court for stabbing his mother 13 times after she did not buy him R200 headsets.
On Friday, Siboniso Vincent Vundla pleaded guilty to his alternative charge of assault with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and he pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of his mom Thuleleni Gertrude Vundla.
In his plea read by his attorney from Legal Aid, Sakhile Zondi, Vundla said on September 3, 2023, he was at home with his mom. He said they argued with her because she did not purchase the headsets for him, despite his giving her the money.
'She told me it was too expensive,' Vundla said.

He said he was due to start working at home, and he needed the headsets urgently. His mom wanted him to borrow the headsets from his cousin.
He said he was angry and they argued about this with his mom, who hurled insults at him while she was busy sewing clothes.
Vundla said that because of his anger, he went to the kitchen to take a knife and came back to stab his mother countless times.
'I was annoyed that my mother was not making efforts to help me, and she was acting as if she was not interested in me,' Vundla added.
He said he intended to stab his mother, and he was not acting in self-defense.
In asking the court to be lenient on his client, Zondi said Vundla was remorseful of his actions and he apologised to his mother.
Additionally, Zondi said Vundla has acknowledged that he has a problem and is willing to seek help so he can better control his anger.
He added that Vundla has two children, with the youngest being four years old.
'He is single and unemployed. He has been in custody from the day he was arrested on September 3, 2023,' he added.
Zondi said his client had a previous conviction, but it does not relate to this matter, as he was driving at high speed. He also urged the court not to forget the principle of Ubuntu (humanity).
The State regional prosecutor, Kaystree Ramsamujh, read the victim impact statement of Thuleleni.
Thuleleni said Vundla was the only boy among four girls; she said his upbringing was good, and they were close.
She said that when Vundla turned 19, he started to change and abuse her, together with his siblings.
'Living with him was stressful; there was no peace at home. He would demand things to be done for him,' Thuleleni said.
She said Vundla would have killed him on the fateful day had she not taken the knife from him, which also injured her hand. She said her left hand had been paralysed because of the incident.
Ramsamujh said society needed to be protected from people like Vundla.
She said Thuleleni could no longer sew clothes as she was a dressmaker.
'One would expect the accused to have the utmost respect for his mother.'
She said the medical records showed that the stab wounds were in vital parts of Thuleleni's body, like the neck, adding that there were no compelling circumstances that would allow the court to deviate from the minimum sentences.
Magistrate Sibongise Cele said Vundla betrayed the trust of his family as he was the only male in the house.
He said that at one stage, Thuleleni had applied for a domestic order against Vundla, but he failed to respect it.
'You have deprived your mother of a source of income that she was dependent on. Not only did you stab her once, but 13 times. She was lucky to survive the incident,' Magistrate Cele said.
He sentenced him to 10 years and suspended two years, meaning he would spend eight years in prison. Magistrate Cele further declared Vundla unfit to possess a firearm.

PSL avoids chaos as Marumo Gallants receive lenient sanction

The PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has narrowly avoided chaos on the eve of the 2025/26 season, thanks to a lenient outcome in the controversial registration saga involving Marumo Gallants and midfielder Monde Mphambaniso. Cape Town City had been hoping for a last-minute lifeline that might see them reinstated in the Betway Premiership, but those hopes were crushed on Thursday night when the PSL Disciplinary Committee (DC) handed Gallants a R200,000 fine — half suspended — for violating registration rules. That means the MTN8 will go ahead without delay, and the top-flight calendar remains intact, even though the decision leaves many with more questions than answers. City had taken the matter to arbitration through the South African Football Association (SAFA), arguing that Gallants breached league regulations by fielding Mphambaniso in 26 of their 28 league matches last season despite not securing the correct clearance certificate. The PSL handbook clearly stipulates that such documentation is required when a player moves between clubs, especially if they were previously registered as professionals. I hope we get a similar verdict, Marumo Gallants must be fined and Capetown City must play in the NFD — Shamase (@uNdu_Mk) July 28, 2025 Video Player is loading. With that transaction, Mphambaniso effectively became a Leruma United player — and thus should have been cleared anew to feature for Gallants. Instead, Gallants simply carried on with him in their squad, setting the stage for a dispute that could've derailed the entire league kickoff. PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed on Thursday that Gallants had pleaded guilty to misconduct, acknowledging their failure to follow proper procedure in registering Mphambaniso. 'The PSL finalised a disciplinary matter, in which I had proferred charges of misconduct against Marumo Gallants FC and its player Monde Mphambaniso,' said Majavu. 'The case stems from the registration of Mphambaniso, which was procured by Gallants without the required clearance certificate in accordance with the rules of the league.' Marumo Gallants management must apologise to us for bringing us into disrepute. They must also give us an undertaking that they followed due process with all players for 2025/2026 season. — Bra Hloni (@BraHlonisky) August 1, 2025

Gallants slapped on the wrist as PSL rules on Mphambaniso matter

Marumo Gallants have been slapped on the wrist by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in the matter involving Monde Mphambaniso. Gallants were found guilty by the South African Football Association (SAFA) for playing Mphambaniso without a clearance. Mphambaniso featured in 26 league matches for Gallants last season, and Cape Town City discovered this and lodged an official complaint. And while City had expected a deduction of points which would have seen them reinstated back to the Betway Premiership. Had Gallants been docked points, they would have finished below City but the PSL Disciplinary Committee (PSL DC) decided otherwiee. In its ruling, the PSL DC found Gallants guilty as charged but not Mphambaniso, and the club was fined R200 000 of which half was suspended. City finished 15th on the log last season, and were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship via the playoffs. According to the PSL Prosecutor Advocate Zola Majavu, Cape Town City are welcome to appeal this latest ruling. Marumo Gallants players celebrate. Image: Twitter/@_Marumogallants 'I can confirm that a short while ago, the PSL DC just finalised a disciplinary matter in which I had preferred charges of misconduct against Marumo Gallants Football Club as well as its player, Mr. Monde Mpambaniso,' said Majavu. 'The PSL DC ruled as follows, one, that Marumo Gallants be fined an amount of 200,000 Rands, half of which is immediately payable, and the other half suspended for 24 months, on condition that during the period of suspension they are not found guilty of the same offence again.' 'Should they re-offend, that suspended portion would be triggered immediately, and they will be further sanctioned for that subsequent misdemeanour. 'They were further directed to carry the costs of the DC hearing up until the matter was finalised, which costs would be completed administratively, and then on forwarded to Marumo Gallants to pay.' Marumo Gallants found guilty – but did Cape Town City get the outcome they wanted?

Gallants in trouble Marumo Gallants have been found guilty of playing an incorrectly registered Monde Mpambaniso during last season's league campaign. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Image: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Relegated Cape Town City's bid to remain in the Betway Premiership has taken yet another knock after the punishment handed out to Marumo Gallants for fielding an incorrectly registered player. After the PSL initially refused to prosecute Gallants over their incorrect registration of Monde Mpambaniso, Cape Town City approached the SAFA arbitration tribunal to force the league to look at the matter. Gallants pleaded guilty when appearing in front of the PSL Disciplinary Committee for the improper registration of Mpambaniso. As a result of the guilty verdict, Gallants will have to pay a fine of R200,000, with 50% suspended for 24 months. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. The punishment will not go down well with relegated Cape Town City bosses, who led the charge against Gallants hoping for a points deduction. A points deduction would have seen Gallants finish bottom of the Betway Premiership, resulting in the Citizens retaining their place in the league. This case represented the Cape Town club's last throw of the dice to remain in the top flight after their attempts to buy another club's status did not succeed. It's a bitter pill to swallow for the Capetonians. While the guilty verdict confirms their concerns were valid, the absence of a points deduction means the club must now come to terms with life in the lower division.
