The family of
P Venkataraman
, a resident of Odisha's Ganjam district and one of the three Indians kidnapped by an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group in Mali, has said that the abductors are demanding ransom.
Speaking to ANI on Saturday, Venkataraman's brother-in-law said, 'Venkat last called me on June 30. He worked at a cement factory in Mali, West Africa. He said the company had restricted their movement because terrorists were nearby. This kidnapping happened on July 1.'
Initially, the family was informed that Venkataraman was in police custody following a fire at the factory allegedly set by terrorists. However, they later learned that he had been abducted.
'We got a call from the company saying he and some others were in police custody because terrorists had set the factory on fire. But then international news reports claimed that al-Qaeda had kidnapped people. When we called the company to confirm, they asked us not to leak the information and said the terrorists were demanding ransom,' the brother-in-law said.
He added, 'We waited for a few days and then approached the police. I also called and emailed the embassy but got no response. I demand that my brother-in-law be brought back home safely.'
Live Events
Confirming the incident, Sub-Collector Shibashish Baral told ANI, 'Information about the abduction was reported by the family, and the local administration immediately reached out to them. The government has been informed and is taking necessary steps.'
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed grave concern over the abduction of the three Indian workers from a factory in Mali's Kayes region. In a statement on Wednesday, the MEA urged
Malian authorities
to ensure their "safe and expeditious" rescue.
'It has come to the knowledge of the Government of India that many military and government installations at multiple locations in western and central Mali were attacked by terrorists on July 1,' the MEA said. The assault also targeted the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, where the Indian nationals were employed.
Calling the act 'deplorable,' the MEA condemned the incident and reiterated India's strong opposition to violence against its citizens abroad. It said the Indian embassy in Bamako is in 'close and constant communication' with Malian authorities, law enforcement, and the management of the Diamond Cement Factory, as well as with the families of the abducted individuals.

‘Nimisha Priya faces execution in Yemenon July 16'

Kochi: Keralite nurse Nimisha Priya, currently on death row at the central prison in Yemen's capital Sana'a for the murder of a Yemeni national, is scheduled to be executed on July 16, according to human rights activist Samuel Jerome, who holds the power of attorney for Nimisha's mother Prema Kumari. However, there has been no official confirmation of the execution date from the Indian embassy in Yemen, ministry of external affairs (MEA) or Save Nimisha Priya Action Council. Jerome said the execution order was issued by the public prosecutor's office and handed over to prison authorities, who fixed July 16 as the date. Nimisha, a native of Kollengode in Palakkad, was accused of murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi — with whom she had started a health clinic in Sana'a and later reportedly entered into a marriage — in July 2017. She allegedly chopped his body and dumped the body parts in a water tank. Mahdi had reportedly tortured Nimisha and illegally seized her passport, which led to the murder. A trial court sentenced her to death in 2018, a verdict later upheld by an appeals court. Jerome said Nimisha and the MEA had been informed of the execution decision. He added that negotiations with Mahdi's family and tribal leaders over the payment of blood money would be expedited in view of the prison authorities' decision. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Govt of India can also intervene now for her release...," said Jerome, who added that he will arrive in Yemen on Wednesday to hold further discussions. Subhash Chandran of the Save Nimisha Priya Action Council, however, said they had not received any confirmation of the execution date. "We are in close contact with multiple organisations in Yemen and embassy officials. We have not received any information regarding the execution so far," he said. Negotiations for Nimisha's release suffered a major setback last year when the lawyer appointed by the Indian Embassy demanded a pre-negotiation fee of over Rs 15 lakh. The action council managed to arrange $40,000 through mediators, but the effort fell through midway. Subhash said the council had established contact with Mahdi's family and was working to start negotiation talks, although the family has yet to make a demand for blood money. The prevailing political situation in Yemen is also a major challenge to secure Nimisha's release. While Sana'a is under the control of Houthi militias, the rest of the country is governed by an internationally recognised, Saudi-backed govt and UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC). The Yemeni embassy in Delhi represents the Saudi-backed govt and has no official ties with the Houthis.

‘Government is deeply broken': Elon Musk questions people's faith in Trump amid Epstein files row; US President dodges question

ANI file photo Elon Musk , former ally of US President Donald Trump , has once again brought the Jeffrey Epstein controversy into the spotlight. The Tech billionaire publicly questioned US President Donald Trump's credibility over the unresolved Jeffrey Epstein case, accusing the government of shielding offenders and calling it 'deeply broken. ' In a series of provocative posts on X, Musk criticised Trump for not releasing the so-called 'Epstein client list' and mocked the lack of arrests, even suggesting the former president may be implicated, a claim he later retracted. 'They arrested (and killed) Peanut, but have not even tried to file charges against anyone on the Epstein client list. Govt is deeply broken," said Musk. He posted an image that read, 'More squirrels and raccoons have been arrested than anyone on Epstein's client list.' 'How can people be expected to have faith in Trump if he won't release the Epstein files?' he posted on X on Wednesday. On Monday, Musk targeted Trump over the Epstein case, posting an arrest counter, 'What's the time? Oh look, it's no-one-has-been-arrested-o'clock again …' he posted on his X account. 'The Official Jeffrey Epstein Pedophile Arrest Counter 0 0 0 0,' the image he posted read. On Tuesday, Trump avoided answering a question by a reporter on the Jeffrey Epstein case and said, 'You are a waste of time,' stressing that the country is dealing with 'other issues' like the Texas flood. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The US Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday concluded that sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was not murdered, as per Axios. The memo suggested that Epstein allegedly died by suicide and also did not keep a 'client list' keeping a tab of individuals to whom minor girls were trafficked. Elon Musk accused Donald Trump of being in the 'Epstein Files' but later deleted his posts, admitting that he went 'too far.' Earlier this year, Attorney General Pam Bondi made a claim that a 'client list' was apparently sitting on his desk for review, which fueled speculation among conservative influencers and conspiracy theorists that such a list truly existed. But an announcement by the DOJ debunked such claims, stating that no such list has been found in Epstein's records. This announcement has drawn criticism from conservative internet and media personalities as it contradicted what Bondi claimed. Elon Musk posted a meme on his X account featuring a clown applying makeup, referring to the contradictory statements previously made by Bondi and the memo released by the DOJ earlier on Monday. He also reposted a post from another user that read, 'If the entire govt is protecting pedophiles, it has officially become the govt against people. I hope you all understand that.' Jeffrey Epstein was convicted of being a sexual offender and was accused of running a vast network of underage girls for sex. He died in 2019 while in custody.
