Watch: China stages first robot kickboxing match
Chinese-built humanoid robots have shown off their ability to throw punches and dodge right hooks at the world's first robotic kickboxing tournament.
The fighting wasn't sophisticated or particularly aggressive, often appearing more like a ballet than a boxing match, but it marked a new milestone in the global race to build an ever more realistic humanoid robot.
Four fighting robots, which boxed one-on-one and in teams and were controlled remotely by ringside humans, competed in the China Media Group World Robot Competition on Sunday.
The tournament was held in Hangzhou, east China, and was broadcast by Chinese state news, which boasted of the AI-enabled robots being equipped with only domestically produced technologies.
'I believe this is a moment where history shakes hands with the future. We are witnessing history,' the host of the event said.
The company behind the G1 bipedal model is Unitree Robotics, a prominent Chinese company often making headlines with its flashy humanoid performances.
Its flagship robot had a starring role dancing in the televised Chinese New Year's Eve gala in January. In February, the company started showcasing videos of the model performing martial arts moves, including the spin kick. By April, the robot was seen fighting with humans and easily getting back up after being knocked down.
'The robots fight in a human-machine collaborative way,' Chen Xiyun, a representative of Unitree Robotics, told the Global Times.
Each robot weighs only 35kg and is 4.3ft tall – the average height of an eight-year-old child. They can carry up to 3kg, move at 5mph and are equipped with motion control, a 360 degree depth camera and AI decision-making capabilities. The G1 sells for £12,000.

According to state media, the purpose of the competition was to train the humanoids to 'learn from experience'.
In each round, the robots initially struggled to work out where the opponent was, launching aimless punches as menacing blue-lit eyes peered out from their protective headgear.
The robots improved quickly, delivering stronger blows, downing opponents with front push kicks, contorting their bodies into splits, and twisting and turning with significant agility.
Recent advances in AI software and hardware design have brought highly advanced fighting humanoid robots far closer to reality.
Elon Musk's company Tesla is developing its own humanoid called Optimus. In January, the billionaire said that 'several thousand' will be built this year to help do 'useful things' in the car company's factories.
However, China's two leading robot manufacturers, Unitree and Agibot, are producing increasingly cheap yet advanced humanoids, designed to be used in everyday life, giving Beijing an early push for dominance in the market.

The Chinese humanoids have been seen running half-marathons, assisting in medical procedures, and solving Rubik's Cubes.
According to the Chinese Institute of Electronics, China's humanoid robot market is projected to reach 870 billion yuan (£89 billion) by 2030.
Beijing has also since set up a dedicated robotics venture fund worth more than £100 billion, in the hope that the robots could help plug gaps in China's ageing labour market.

26-legged creature — with bristles — found in bamboo forests. See new species
In the forests of eastern China, fallen leaves provide a barrier between the critters that live in the soil and the outside world. Like a roof over their head, leaf litter acts as protection for soil fauna, but not from a group of researchers studying the environment. Scientists sifting through the leaves in Jiangsu, Shanghai and Zhejiang discovered 'plenty' of critters hidden below — and one turned out to be a species new to science. 'During our soil fauna investigation in East China, plenty of bristle millipedes were obtained,' researchers said in a July 22 study published in the peer-reviewed journal ZooKeys. Bristle millipedes, or Polyxenidae, are a group of tiny millipedes known for their fluffy appearance created by bristles that cover most of their body, according to the study. A total of 190 bristle millipede species have been identified around the world, including 12 in China, researchers said. The new species — Eudigraphis huadongensis — was found in 'leaf litter under broad-leaf forest or bamboo forest,' according to the study. The millipede is just 0.13 inches long, researchers said, with 13 pairs of legs. On the back of the animal there is a caudal bundle, or a bunch of bristles that stick out all together like a tail. The millipede has a 'body evenly yellowish brown' on the back, with a more 'pale yellow' color on the underside, according to the study. There is a dark band on their heads, and they have 'red-brown eyes,' researchers said. The bristle-like appearance is created by bundles of trichomes, or small, hair-like appendages. 'The species was named after the Chinese word 'Huadong' = 'East China' which is the region where all type specimens were collected,' according to the study. Live specimens of the East China bristle millipede were brought back to the lab so researchers could take a closer look at their life cycle. 'The females laid eggs in clusters and protected them with caudal trichomes,' according to the study. 'The eggs are oval, white … and they became transparent after one week.' The egg shells eventually split, and even smaller versions of the new species emerged onto the leaves, according to the study. Researchers noted the species 'lives in the litter, humus, or the upper layer of soil of different kinds of forests, never dwelling under tree bark,' according to the study. 'Our experience of collection indicated that it prefers a relatively dry environment, with high density in dry litter.' All specimens of the new species were found in and around Shanghai, a city on China's east coast. The research team includes Si-Qi Yang, Yun Bu, Nerivania Nunes Godeiro, Yan Gao and Ya-Li Jin.

Ferrari shares dip 12% in biggest decline since 2016 listing
Ferrari shares fell more than 12% on Thursday, the biggest single-day drop since the automaker was first publicly listed on stock exchanges in New York and Milan in 2016, Reuters reports. Yet unlike some automakers, Ferrari is maintaining its financial guidance amid uncertainty over the Trump Administration's tariffs. Citi analysts cited concerns that Ferrari will be able to maintain its profitability momentum in the second half of 2025 amid slowing sales and stagnating transaction prices. In its most recent earnings call, Ferrari said it was more confident in its previous 2025 guidance-which estimates gross earning of just over $3 billion-and reported a 4% increase in net revenue in the second quarter. Ferrari also said in the earnings call that it would remove a 10% price increase on new cars sold in the United States that's been in place since April, following a new trade deal that sets tariffs on cars imported from the European Union at 15%, down from the 27.5% tariff previously imposed by the Trump Administration. According to Reuters, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said in a media call that almost all cars the automaker sold in the U.S. during the second quarter were shipped before the 27.5% tariff was introduced, so the 10% price increase wasn't applied to them. That's the advantage of being a low-volume automaker with a backlog of orders (Vigna reportedly said Ferrari's current order book extends into 2027). Ferrari is also reportedly still on track to deliver its first all-electric car. Vigna said during the call that he had driven the first electric model, and that it would be shown to analysts in October, according to Reuters. A public debut is expected in spring 2026, with customer deliveries starting later in the year. However, this first EV may be a unique item for a while. Ferrari was reportedly planning to unveil a second EV in late 2026, but has pushed that back to 2028 due to low enthusiasm among its customers. Similar issues have been cited by rivals Lamborghini and Maserati, with the latter completely canceling an electric version of its MC20 supercar due to the lack of takers. Meta to share AI infrastructure costs via $2 billion asset sale
By Echo Wang (Reuters) -Meta Platforms is pressing ahead with efforts to bring in outside partners to help fund the massive infrastructure needed to power artificial intelligence, disclosing plans in a filing on Thursday to offload $2 billion in data center assets as part of that strategy. The strategy reflects a broader shift among tech giants — long known for self-funding growth — as they grapple with the soaring cost of building and powering data centers to support generative AI. The social media giant said earlier this week that it was exploring ways to work with financial partners to co-develop data centers to help finance its massive capital outlay for next year. 'We're exploring ways to work with financial partners to co-develop data centers,' Meta Chief Finance Officer Susan Li said on a post-earnings conference call on Wednesday. While the company still expects to fund much of its capital spending internally, some projects could attract 'significant external financing' and offer more flexibility if infrastructure needs shift over time, Li said. The company did not have any finalized transactions to announce, she said. The disclosure in Meta's quarterly filing, however, signals that plans are firming up. In its quarterly filing on Thursday, Meta said it had approved a plan in June to dispose of certain data center assets and reclassified $2.04 billion worth of land and construction-in-progress as "held-for-sale". These assets were expected to be contributed to a third party within the next twelve months for co-developing data centers. Meta did not record a loss on the reclassification, which values the assets at the lower of their carrying amounts or fair value less costs to sell. As of June 30, total held-for-sale assets stood at $3.26 billion, according to the filing. Meta declined to comment for this story. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has laid out plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into constructing AI data center 'superclusters' for superintelligence. 'Just one of these covers a significant part of the footprint of Manhattan,' he said. The Instagram and WhatsApp owner on Wednesday raised the bottom end of its annual capital expenditures forecast by $2 billion, to $66 billion to $72 billion. It reported stronger-than-expected ad sales, boosted by AI-driven improvements to targeting and content delivery.
