Continue improving service quality, Housing and Urban Development Board staff told

Kota Kinabalu: The Local Government and Housing Ministry hopes the Housing and Urban Development Board (LPPB) will maintain its excellence in delivering services as a provider of affordable housing and new urban development in the State. Its Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, said this is important to ensure the government's mandate is effectively translated for the benefit of the people. The Deputy Chief Minister said this when officiating the LPPB's 2025 Meriah Lain Macam Hari Raya Celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre, here, Tuesday. He noted that this was his first time attending LPPB's Hari Raya celebration since being appointed to lead the Ministry. 'I hope LPPB staff will continue improving service quality and upholding excellence in fulfilling the mandate entrusted by the government. 'The LPPB plays a vital role as a provider of affordable low-cost housing and in developing quality new urban centres,' he said. Dr Joachim also expressed hope that the strategic relationship between the Ministry and LPPB would be further strengthened to ensure the public receives the best services. 'In line with this aspiration, I hope the bilateral cooperation between the Ministry and LPPB will remain strong so that service delivery to the community can be carried out proactively. 'These efforts must also align with the implementation of the Sabah Maju Jaya development plan, which prioritises the people's welfare,' he added. He also reminded LPPB staff to remain cautious and uphold integrity in carrying out their duties in today's fast-paced digital era. 'If I may remind you, in this digital age where information and events spread rapidly, exercise caution in performing your duties. 'Carry out your responsibilities with sincerity and accountability so that every action and decision brings benefit, not the opposite,' he said. Dr Joachim said unity, a family-like spirit and harmony within the organisation are key strengths that must be maintained to ensure the agency remains competitive and sustainable. Fundraising event to relocate historic 118-year school
KOTA KINABALU: As preparation for its historic relocation, Sung Siew Secondary School in Sandakan launched the Onward Sung Siew Run (OSSR) on July 5, celebrating its 118th anniversary while raising funds for its new school building. Hundreds of participants, including students, alumni and community well-wishers, flooded the school grounds for the event, which featured 1km and 3km competitive races and family-friendly walk. The run marks the first major fundraiser for the school's highly anticipated move, aiming to secure a modern learning environment for future generations. Joachim proposed making the OSSR an annual event, ensuring sustained support for the relocation and promoting community unity. Key figures in attendance were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Tanjong Papat assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, Datu Roslih Datu Siabok from the District Education Office and Sandakan Municipal Council president Walter Kenson. School leaders present included Board of Governors chairman Vun Soon Chong, Alumni Association president Johnny Lim and Principal Kwok Chee Yen. The event's success was powered by teachers, parent volunteers, corporate sponsors and over 100 student helpers. While the fundraising tally will be released next week, early estimates suggest strong progress toward the relocation goal.

Kota Kinabalu: Industry players have urged the State Government to review its policy concerning the operation of Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal here. This follows the recent change of management from Suria Capital Holdings Berhad to EasyBook, a Peninsular Malaysia-based company, said Sabah Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Satta) Chairman Dato' Seri Winston Liaw. He said the new management had abruptly increased fees for operators using the terminal. Kyiv invests $6.2m in drone interceptors to counter Russian attacks
KYIV: Kyiv will allocate 260 million hryvnias ($6.2 million) for a drone interceptor program to defend the capital's skies from Russian drones, city authorities said on Friday. Russia has stepped up its combined attacks on the Ukrainian capital in recent weeks, launching hundreds of drones and missiles in hours-long night assaults which caused damage to most of the city districts. 'These funds will be used not only to purchase equipment, but also to create an effective response system,' the head of Kyiv city military administration Tymur Tkachenko wrote on the Telegram messaging app. The city said it planned to involve additional funds outside the existing budget, without specifying how much will be needed. Tkachenko said a pilot project had proven its initial effectiveness by intercepting almost 550 drones launched by Russia to attack the Kyiv region in the last few months. The deadly attacks have prompted Ukrainian leaders to renew their urgent calls for air defence help from allies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has also reported on the successful use of interceptor drones to help repel large attacks and said work was ongoing on scaling the technology. At the Ukraine Recovery Conference this week, he mentioned investment in this type of air defence in meetings with Dutch, German, and American partners. Authorities plan to open a center for training interceptor drone operators and creating additional mobile units in the capital and its suburbs, Tkachenko said. - Reuters
