Palakkad Division undertakes replacing and strengthening of turnouts to enhance safety in Mangaluru

The Hindu04-05-2025
Southern Railway's Palakkad Division has undertaken massive replacement and strengthening of turnouts in a significant step towards enhancing train safety and operational efficiency.
The division has replaced a total of 133 existing old 52 kg turnouts with Thick Web Switches of 60Kg (heavier material) in the last one year thereby ensuring stronger and more durable track structures. A thick web switch (point) is a type of railway turnout, designed to improve safety and durability on high-speed tracks.
The key feature of a TWS is a thicker web in the stock and tongue rails, which provides higher strength and resistance to wear and tear, especially at higher speeds. A turnout, also known as a point or a crossing, is a mechanical device allowing a train to switch from one track to another.
During the process, 77 layouts (turnouts) were corrected to perfect geometry using advanced computer solutions, involving precise longitudinal and lateral shifting with the help of the Track Relaying (T-28) Machine. This has resulted in improved safety and passenger comfort, said a release.
The weak and dust-laden small stones (known as ballast) beneath the railway tracks were cleaned and replaced to ensure a minimum clean ballast cushion of 250mm. This enhanced layer of clean ballast provides improved track elasticity, stability and firmness, even during heavy rainfall or under the dynamic loads of train operations. Palakkad division carried out deep screening of 145 such turnouts during the last one year.
These systematic measures not only improve passenger comfort but significantly enhance the overall safety of rail operations. These initiatives align with Indian Railways' vision of providing faster and safer rail travel by adhering strictly to the highest standards of track maintenance and safety protocols, the release added.

Land identified for setting up maintenance facility for Vande Bharat coaches in Tiruchi

About 30 acres of railway land in Tiruchi has been earmarked for setting up a dedicated facility for the maintenance of Vande Bharat Express trains. The land is near the upcoming Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) shed near Manjathidal railway station. It was identified by the authorities of the Golden Rock Railway Workshop here. Ashish Sharma, Additional Member (Mechanical Engineering), Railway Board, New Delhi, visited the site on Thursday. The Railway Board nominated the Golden Rock Railway Workshop two months ago to undertake SS-I (Shop Schedule) and other major schedules of the Vande Bharat train sets in the place of Perambur Workshop in Chennai. This is a ₹300-crore project. 'If required, more railway land will be utilised,' said the workshop authorities. The workshop has prepared the abstract estimate for the establishment of the new facility and it will be reviewed by the Southern Railway. The estimate includes machinery and plant requirements, civil works, and overhead electrical arrangements required for the maintenance of Vande Bharat coaches, the authorities said. Built during the British era, the Golden Rock Railway Workshop takes up a variety of tasks such as periodic overhaul of diesel locomotives and passenger coaches, manufacture of wagons and automobile carriers besides undertaking periodic overhauling of steam locomotives operated in the Nilgiri Mountain Railway section. Some technical personnel of the workshop were sent to various railway workshops across the country handling the maintenance of Vande Bharat coaches to gain first hand experience and ascertain the requirements for setting up the facility in Tiruchi. The Vande Bharat trains have strong safety features, including the Kavach safety system, and can run up to a speed of 160 kmph.

Southern Railway upgrades Chennai suburban trains to 12-car rakes; boosts capacity by 21%, adds space for 4 lakh more passengers

CHENNAI: Southern has successfully upgraded all 9-car Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains to 12-car formations across major suburban routes, significantly enhancing Chennai's suburban rail capacity. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The conversion was completed in stages at the Avadi EMU Car Shed. The longer trains now operate on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu, Chennai Central–Arakkonam, and Chennai Central–Gummidipoondi/Sullurupeta lines, offering a 21% increase in seating capacity. This upgrade aims to ease overcrowding, especially during peak travel times, and improve commuter comfort. The suburban rail network currently handles around 8.6 lakh daily passengers, while non-suburban services carry an additional 3.4 lakh. The 12-car upgrade makes room for up to 4 lakh more passengers daily. According to Railway officials, the move was made to improve safety and reduce congestion, particularly along the heavily used South West and North East corridors. The upgrade is part of Southern Railway's wider effort to modernise the suburban system and cater to rising passenger numbers.

Railway firm on parking fees, commuters cry foul

T'puram: Southern Railway is yet to roll back the steep increase in parking fees at railway stations in the Thiruvananthapuram division that was implemented from June 1. As per the new tariff rate, the two-wheeler parking for a month rose from Rs 360 to Rs 500. People are upset as the parking rates and season ticket rates together push up monthly commuting costs. "The new tariff has more than doubled the charges for parking, making it unaffordable for the common man," said Liyons J of Friends on Rails. "It has to be reconsidered," he added. Not all two-wheeler users are granted monthly passes and most stations only offer them to those parking for less than eight hours. Collection practices are arbitrary and some stations collect money without issuing proper receipts, he added. Passengers are also demanding CCTV surveillance in parking areas. Passengers alleged that the railway failed to provide any security for parked vehicles and also did not offer adequate facilities. Additionally, there is an extra charge for storing helmets and raincoats. Following a request from Friends on Rails officials, Kodikkunnil Suresh, MP, formally requested the Thiruvananthapuram divisional manager to review the revised rates. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2 & 3 BHK Homes Near Padur, OMR Starting @ ₹72.50 Lakh* TVS Emerald Undo A railway official said that the parking fees were decided after considering the feasibility.
