Building the next generation of tech professionals: Traditional interviews out, companies gamify aptitude assessment
HYDERABAD: Excelling in group discussions or answering tough technical questions alone might not land you a job after graduation. Many companies are now opting for gamified aptitude assessments, virtual interviews and online exam to better gauge capabilities. Over 60% institutes reported that entry-level tests were significantly redesigned in the past two years, reflecting the shift toward more skillbased evaluation, according to a NASSCOM report, 'Building the Next Generation of Tech Professionals'. Employers are increasingly looking at coding proficiency, logical reasoning and real-world situations involving Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning while hiring candidates. Now, it's all about students' capabilities and online profiles. For any coding job, companies see coding profiles on sites such as LeetCode and CodeChef to assess students' skills by seeing their ratings. They are also conducting coding competitions,' said NLN Reddy, director, career development cell, Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology. He said companies are also looking at global certifications in emerging tech courses to assess candidates' interest in their chosen field. Companies are even hiring through own portals or third-party services, offering live evaluation to prevent manipulation by candidates. Even the NASSCOM report highlighted how companies are using platforms such as HackerRank, HackerEarth, CodeSignal, Codility, Phenom and HireVue to screen candidates across a range of skills in a virtual set-up with AI-driven evaluation support. He said that unlike the earlier practice of screening tests for all final year students, companies are now showing interest in only those with good profiles – internships, projects, and certifications. 'Most companies either have hackathons or coding rounds. Some even have both,' said C Vinod Kumar from Forum for IT Employees.

‘Try before you hire' trend grows as 50% internships turn into job offers; rigorous selection process by GCCs
HYDERABAD: Internships are increasingly enabling young people to secure jobs at Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and startups, with many of these organisations adopting a 'try before you hire' approach to assess potential fulltime recruits. From code to C-suite: Decoding how CTOs are widening their expertise to overcome challenges to shine at the tech-business frontier
As innovative technologies redefine the workings of several sectors, India finds itself at an interesting juncture in its economic growth story. According to this Nasscom report , the Indian tech industry is expected to record revenue (including hardware) of approximately $283 Bn (5.1% year-on-year growth), an addition of nearly $14 Bn over last year. The growing adoption of technologies like artificial intelligence, internet-of-things etc. along with a knack for innovation and the government's leanings towards digital transformation has given the country an opportunity for human-focused transformation of industries and economies. While there is an intriguing technology growth story unfolding for the country, this potential has also presented challenges for Chief Technology Officers who are guiding their companies toward progress and achieving business outcomes. They are at the forefront of technology initiatives while also staying in loop with research and development along with executive collaborations. But they also need to address hurdles such as staffing, budget limits, cyber threats etc. Let's take a look at some of the roadblocks that CTOs have to maneuver: The tech world is constantly changing and in times when innovations quickly become the norm, it is essential for CTOs to remain agile. They need to surpass the knowledge of tools to be able to forecast how technology is influencing the world of work. They have to continuously build their skillsets to leave a mark. The seamless integration of artificial intelligence in processes also needs strategic planning from the CTO. They have to be able to implement smooth cross-departmental collaborations for smooth adoption of new technology. Companies must comply with laws around data privacy. Addressing these requirements also involves CTOs' thorough involvement in times when cyber threats have become extremely sophisticated and evolved. Overcoming the skills gap is another challenge CTOs face in ensuring their teams can set up robust systems that can enable the company to offer innovative products and meet business targets. To empower CTOs to be able to find solutions to such multifaceted challenges, the need of the hour are programmes that can help them understand the frameworks they need to have in place for technological progress. These courses also reduce the gap between business and IT, and help CTOs align technology and company objectives, leading to digital transformation. One such programme is the Chief Technology Officer Programme , offered by CEP, IIT Delhi. This 10-month online programme has an impactful learning pedagogy, which involves lectures, case studies, panel discussions, tutorials, guest lectures and a capstone project. The IIT Delhi faculty will be conducting live, interactive sessions, which will give professionals ample opportunities to make the most out of this experience. Here's what one of the former programme participants has to say: "Joining the IIT Delhi CTO Programme was driven by my passion for learning and a fascination with how tech executives shape company direction. This programme has enriched my decision-making skills and expanded my network, positioning me to advance towards becoming a successful CTO. The experience at IIT Delhi, paired with exceptional faculty, has been a dream come true. Overall, my journey with Jaro Education has been fantastic, thanks to their unwavering support and commitment to providing a great learning experience. I highly recommend this programme for its profound insights and invaluable connections." - Bhavya Bansal, Head of Engineering, Easyres Travel Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Participants who sign up for this programme are from industries such as healthcare, information and technology, manufacturing, education, retail, etc. They have different ranges of work experience like 5 to 7 years, or even 13 years and more. Such a diverse pool of candidates ensures a rich learning experience. The participant also get to apply their learnings from this programme in prestigious companies. As technology reimagines the world at a quick pace, the role of the Chief Technology Officer has never been more critical. This programme has been conceptualised to equip future-first leaders with the strategic insight, technical foresight, and innovation mindset needed to bring in transformation at scale. It offers an immersive learning experience with real-world case studies, peer collaboration, and enables professionals to build the future of technology in their companies.
