Huge question every Aussie wants answered about lion attack that left woman without an arm - as victim's relationship to zoo owner is revealed

Daily Mail5 hours ago
Questions have been raised about how a brutal lion attack was able to unfold at a zoo as it's revealed the victim who lost her arm is the sister of the owner.
The woman, whose identity has not been officially released, is the sister of Stephanie Robinson, who runs Darling Downs Zoo near Toowoomba in Queensland.
The woman lost her arm after a lioness 'inexplicably' grabbed her on Sunday morning while she was watching keepers work in the carnivore precinct.
But confusion has grown after a series of contradictory statements from the zoo about the victim's ties to the sanctuary, and whether she was inside the enclosure when the big cat struck.
In its first statement on Facebook, the zoo described the woman, in her 50s, as a 'much-loved member of our family', claiming she was well-versed in safety protocols and had been around dangerous animals for decades.
It insisted the lioness never left its enclosure and that there was 'no risk at all to staff members or members of the public.'
But later that same day, the zoo appeared to backtrack, stating the woman was 'not an immediate family member or a zookeeper' - a claim flatly contradicted by media reports it was Ms Robinson's sister.
By Monday, a fresh statement declared the victim was not an 'employee, a keeper or a visitor, but rather a much-loved member of the zoo owners' family'.
'It has still not been possible to interview her to establish what led to this tragic incident,' the post read.
'We can confirm that she was attacked by a lioness. She was not in its enclosure. It was not hungry, skinny, taunted or tortured – it is a lion.
'It comes from a long line of captive-born lions in Australia but it is still a lion – not a pet.'
Daily Mail Australia showed Griffith University biologist Dr Alexander Braczkowski images posted by the zoo showing staff patting and kissing the dangerous predators.
He said the images were a 'major red flag' that contributed to the horrific incident.
'The big question here is how the lion even got into close contact with the victim, but the more critical question: why was a non-zoo staff member even in proximity to an adult lioness,' he said.
'I'd say there's has been a major breach of safety protocol.
'Thank God it happened in Australia rather than Africa otherwise she would have bled out.'
Animal welfare group FOUR PAWS said most private facilities lacked the capacity or resources to ensure appropriate welfare or safety.
'Incidents like this often occur when wild animals are placed in unnatural settings or when close human interaction is permitted,' director Rebecca Linigen said.
Ms Linigen said in most cases these types of incidents could be prevented.
'Prevention begins with ensuring that big cats are not kept in environments that allow or encourage direct contact with humans, whether for tourism, selfies, feeding demonstrations, or so-called 'educational' interactions,' she said.
'Without strong oversight and enforcement, these environments pose unacceptable risks to both animals and people.'

Footy legend Gorden Tallis is slammed for comparing AFL great Adam Goodes to NRL star who put a little girl in hospital in drug-driving crash

Footy legend Gorden Tallis has been slammed by fans online after comparing scandal-hit NRL star Ezra Mam to Adam Goodes. In what one supporter labelled 'one of the worst takes', the Queensland cult hero likened the hostile treatment Mam has received in recent weeks to the ugly booing storm that saw Swans champion Adam Goodes walk away from his football career prematurely in 2015. Mam was taunted by fired-up Bulldogs fans last Friday at Accor Stadium - but he silenced the knockers to orchestrate a comeback 22-18 win for the Broncos. The 22-year-old has been targeted by away crowds after serving a nine-match suspension handed down by the NRL. It followed Mam pleading guilty to driving under the influence of illicit drugs without a licence following a car crash that injured three people - including a four-year-old girl - in October last year in Brisbane. Footy fans were seething when Mam was fined $850 and disqualified from driving for nine months by the Brisbane Magistrates Court. No conviction was recorded. While many believe Mam should have been suspended for the entire 2025 NRL season, Tallis has raised eyebrows after his extraordinary take on the pivot's return to the game. 'Ezra Mam is getting an Adam Goodes-style treatment,' Tallis said on Triple M's Sunday Sin Bin. 'No matter what ground he went at, Adam Goodes was targeted for a while and Ezra Mam is getting that now. 'It was coming loud and clear through the television the other night when he played the Dogs. It was every time he touched the ball.' Many footy fans were in disbelief after hearing Tallis's views. 'One of the worst takes you've ever seen,' posted one on X. 'Batsh*t from Gorden Tallis,' said another. 'Tallis is in fact, out of touch with reality,' a third commented. Another pointed out that there's a huge gulf between what Mam did and why Goodes was driven out of the game A third supporter felt Tallis was 'out of touch with reality' In 2015, Goodes famously performed his iconic Indigenous war dance in a match versus Carlton - and was then a constant crowd target at Swans' away games. Two years earlier, Goodes was targeted by a teenage Collingwood supporter who called him an ape - and chaos followed. As the saga intensified, Goodes - a two-time Brownlow Medallist and dual premiership winner - felt the game didn't support him. Goodes then retired in 2015, and has chosen to distance himself from the sport ever since. 'He's living his best life. We miss him, we love him and hopefully at some point we will get to see him again,' former teammate and Swans board member Michael O'Loughlin said recently. 'He loved the game... Adam should have walked out a hero and the fact he didn't is a real indictment on us.'

Man fighting for life with third-degree burns after giant explosion flattened his home on the NSW North Coast

An elderly man is fighting for life with third-degree burns after a giant explosion flattened his demountable home on the NSW North Coast. Up to 14 firefighters rushed to control the blaze at the residence on Mary Street at Noble Lakeside Park, Kingscliff, about 7.30am on Monday. Crews arrived to find the home - located in an over-50s retirement village - flattened and in pieces after the explosion blew the walls and roof apart. An 85-year-old man with severe burns was rushed to Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical condition, while an 83-year-old woman was taken to Tweed Valley Hospital in a stable condition with minor burns to her face and body. NSW Ambulance Inspector Paul Millard said their injuries were 'significant'. 'The home was completely destroyed,' he said. Fire and Rescue NSW told Daily Mail Australia that the explosion may have been caused by a leaking LPG system. Police also said initial investigations revealed the fire may have been sparked by a leak from an internal portable gas appliance. LPG vapour is highly flammable, and air mixtures containing between two and ten per cent can easily ignite and explode. A resident of the park who did not want to be named, said she felt and heard the explosion before she saw black smoke pouring out of the home. 'It was huge. People up the hill in Cudgen say their homes shook,' she told the ABC. The woman said neighbours ran into the home to rescue the elderly couple before it became fully engulfed in flames. 'I just pray they're going to be OK,' she said. 'It's just so sad.'

BREAKING NEWS Sole survivor of Erin Patterson's deadly mushroom lunch shares eight-word message

The sole survivor of the ill-fated Beef Wellington lunch has broken his silence a day after Erin Patterson was found guilty of murdering her ex-husband's parents and aunt. Patterson on Monday was found guilty of killing her parents-in-law Don and Gail Patterson and Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson at her Leongatha home almost two years ago. The mother-of-two was also found guilty of attempting to murder Heather's husband, Ian Wilkinson. The local church pastor, who spent weeks in hospital recovering from the lunch that killed his wife and in-laws posted a message on a noticeboard outside the Korumburra Baptist Church on Tuesday. 'Life can be hard, but God is faithful,' part of the message read. The message also requests privacy during this 'difficult time'. 'We all greatly miss Heather, Don and Gail, whether we were friends for a short time or over 20 years. They were very special people who loved God and lived to bless others,' it continues. 'It's been a long journey, and we continue to lovingly support Ian, Simon and all the Wilkinson and Patterson family members through this difficult time.
