Boyd sharp, Suzuki homers as Cubs deal Guardians 5th straight loss
Carson Kelly doubled twice with a sac fly for three RBIs. Michael Busch went 3-for-3 and drove in a run to help NL Central-leading Chicago win its 50th game.
Carlos Santana had two hits, including his 400th career double, but Cleveland dropped its fifth straight.
The Guardians scored two runs in the fourth — ending a skid of 17 straight scoreless innings — on Nolan Jones' RBI single and Angel Martínez's sacrifice fly. Cleveland has scored in just two of its last 45 innings.
Boyd (8-3) allowed two runs on five hits with five strikeout and one walk. The left-hander finished by retiring 11 straight hitters before Brad Keller entered for the eighth.
Daniel Palencia struck out two in a perfect ninth for his ninth save.
Cleveland's Gavin Williams (5-4) yielded four runs on seven hits and four walks.
The Cubs took a 3-0 lead in a quirky second on four straight hits.
Then Kelly was out at home when he tried to score from third after the ball got away from catcher Bo Naylor. Williams walked the next two hitters — Nico Hoerner and Matt Shaw — but picked both off first.
After Cleveland cut it to 3-2 in the fourth, Suzuki hit his solo shot to left in the sixth.
Key moment
It looked like Cleveland's offense finally awakened in the fourth. But Boyd picked off Jones for the second out, then got Naylor to ground out.
Key stat
Boyd tossed his 12th quality start in 17. He's one win short of his career high of nine, reached with Detroit in 2018 and 2019

Cubs outfielders Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong named NL starters in All-Star Game
Cubs outfielders Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong were named All-Star Game starters on Wednesday, after helping lead the team to the second-best record in the National League so far this year. It's Tucker's fourth time as an All-Star, and Crow-Armstrong's first selection. Both are very deserving starters, since they're not only playing at an All-Star level, but really an MVP level in the first half of the season. Tucker is slashing .290/.393/.533 with 17 home runs, 52 RBI, and 20 stolen bases, with a 4.1 WAR. Crow-Armstrong is slashing .265/.301/.537 with 21 home runs, 62 RBI, and 25 stolen bases, along with a 4.5 WAR, while ranking 15th in the majors in defensive runs saved. Cubs manager Craig Counsell earlier talked about what both have brought to the Cubs team that is leading the NL Central Division. "When you think of Kyle, it's like this is like the perfect makeup for a Major League hitter, in terms of how even-keeled he is … it allows him, I think, so well to stay pitch to pitch. And for Pete, it's kind of the opposite, really. I mean, I think he relies on emotion to fuel himself, and he needs to express it, and I think that's what attracts the fans to him." Before Crow-Armstrong's first All-Star appearance became official, Cubs president Jed Hoyer said the second-year outfielder is clearly deserving of the honor. "The All-Star Game is an awesome stage for him, for the Cubs, for his brand, and he's certainly – with the way he's played for the first 80-something games, he absolutely deserves to be standing in center field to start the game," Hoyer said. Former Cubs shortstop Javier Baez also is returning to the All-Star Game as an outfielder for the Tigers, thanks to a resurgent season in Detroit. He's slashing .285/.323/.460, with 9 home runs and 36 RBI – production he hasn't matched in years. Báez edged the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout 26% to 24% in the closest vote, winning the third AL outfield slot.

Even retired UFC stars like Nate Diaz and Anderson Silva have tested their skills in the boxing ring, capitalizing on their name recognition for career-defining payouts. Advertisement Now, the sport of freestyle wrestling is a new option, with former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan's Real American Freestyle (RAF) becoming the latest destination for elite athletes seeking fresh opportunities. Former WWE wrestler Hulk Hogan before the fight between Colby Covington and Joaquin Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Penn State wrestling legend and currently active UFC middleweight Bo Nickal is the latest to make the leap, signing with RAF. The three-time NCAA champion, who made his way to the UFC by winning a contract on Dana White's Contender Series, returns to his roots in a competitive freestyle wrestling environment and will make his debut at RAF's inaugural event on August 30 in Cleveland, Ohio. Hogan, the commissioner of RAF, praised Nickal, saying, 'Bo Nickal is a tremendous athlete and one of the most accomplished wrestlers on the planet. Nickal immediately elevates the RAF roster to new heights with his competitiveness and experience. When fans attend an RAF event, they know they're going to see the best of the best on the mat.' For Nickal, who suffered his first MMA loss to Reinier de Ridder in May, this move offers a chance to showcase his wrestling prowess while keeping options open for a UFC return. His recent signing indicates a growing trend of MMA fighters diversifying their careers, whether for financial gain, legacy-building, or simply staying active. While boxing remains the most lucrative crossover path, RAF is providing a unique platform for wrestlers to monetize their skills after their collegiate careers, beyond MMA or Pro Wrestling. Freeman, Smith join Ohtani to give Dodgers 3 All-Star starters for first time since 1980
NEW YORK (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers will have three fan-elected starters in the All-Star Game for the first time in 45 years, with first baseman Freddie Freeman and catcher Will Smith joining designated hitter Shohei Ohtani as winners in final ballot totals announced Wednesday. Detroit will have three fan-picked starters for the first time since 2007 after second baseman Gleyber Torres along with outfielders Riley Greene and Javier Báez were voted in at their positions for the July 15 game at Atlanta's Truist Park. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker of the Chicago Cubs were picked for the NL outfield along with Ronald Acuña Jr. of the host Braves. Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte, New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor and San Diego third baseman Manny Machado also were voted NL starters. Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh, Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson. Cleveland third baseman José Ramírez and Baltimore designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn were picked as AL starters. Wilson edged Kansas City's Bobby Witt Jr. 52% to 48% and will become just the second rookie shortstop to start an All-Star Game after Baltimore's Ron Hansen, who started both games in 1960. Wilson's father, Jack, was an All-Star for Pittsburgh in 2004. There will be nine first-time starters for the second time in three years. Wilson will be joined by Greene, O'Hearn, Raleigh and Torres in the AL lineup and Crow-Armstrong, Lindor, Smith and Tucker in the NL lineup. Báez edged the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout 26% to 24% in the closest vote, winning the third AL outfield slot. New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge earned a starting spot last week as the top vote-getter in the first round, when Ohtani was picked as NL DH with the top total in his league. Under rules that began in 2022, voting is split into two stages, and the second phase ran from Monday to Thursday. Los Angeles hadn't had this many starters since first baseman Steve Garvey, second baseman Davey Lopes, shortstop Bill Russell and center fielder Reggie Smith in 1980 at Dodger Stadium. Detroit's three elected starters for the 2007 game at San Francisco were catcher Iván Rodríguez, left fielder Magglio Ordóñez and second baseman Plácido Polanco. Freeman is the senior All-Star, picked for the ninth time and his fifth as a starter. He will return to Atlanta, where he starred from 2010-21. Guerrero, Judge, Marte, Ohtani and Ramírez were holdovers from last year's elected starters. Pitchers and reserves will be announced Sunday. ___
