ITR-1 to ITR-5: Find out which income tax form you would need as you file your return
Here, we give a lowdown on the key income tax forms and which taxpayers must use as they file their tax returns.
ITR1 (Sahaj): This income tax form is primarily used by the taxpayers whose income is lower than ₹ 50 lakh during the financial year and income comes mainly from salary, one house property, family pension income, agricultural income, long term capital gain and other sources, including savings accounts, interest from deposits, interest from income tax refund, any other interest income.

A 4-day workweek could boost productivity and wellbeing, says economist. But why won't we try it?
In a world still recovering from the psychological whiplash of the pandemic, the dream of a better work-life balance no longer feels like a utopia — it feels necessary. Juliet Schor , a Boston College economist and sociologist, has been advocating this shift for decades. Her latest work as lead researcher with 4 Day Week, a global initiative studying the impact of reduced working hours , suggests the idea may finally be catching on. Speaking to CNBC Make It, Schor recounted how her 1992 bestseller The Overworked American first sparked debate about overemployment. But it wasn't until COVID-19 forced a radical reevaluation of daily life that serious momentum began building. 'People realized it was more important to be living the life they wanted… not one of overworking, stress, and burnout,' she said. According to Schor's latest book Four Days a Week, which compiles insights from pilots across 245 organizations and 8,700+ employees globally, the results are not just promising — they're transformational. Participants in the pilot reported better work-life balance, less stress, and improved mental and physical health. 'The big jump in self-reported productivity is striking,' Schor told CNBC Make It. 'People feel more on top of their work and their lives. They're not coming into Mondays drained — they're eager, focused, and satisfied.' Even employers had reasons to cheer: productivity stayed stable or even rose, profits ticked upward, and employee turnover practically vanished. Despite the evidence, the five-day workweek remains stubbornly intact in most companies. Schor attributes this resistance to one key issue: control. 'Giving people more time back feels like a loss of control to some managements,' she explains. 'It's not about performance — it's about power.' Add to that the fear of being seen as radical or deviating from the norm, and many businesses choose to stick with the status quo. However, Fridays, once sacrosanct, are already evolving. As Schor notes, most companies informally allow for 'Summer Fridays' or shorter hours at week's end. The four-day shift may simply be formalizing what's already happening. Will AI Do What Policy Can't? Enter Bill Gates — tech visionary and co-founder of Microsoft — who recently made waves on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon by predicting a two-day workweek within a decade, driven by the explosive rise of artificial intelligence. You Might Also Like: It is not just Narayana Murthy: UK venture capitalist says a 7-day workweek is the price to 'win' amid China's '996' culture Gates believes AI will soon be able to perform the bulk of tasks currently handled by humans. 'It's kind of profound,' he said. 'It brings so much change.' That change, he imagines, could free up time for creativity, caregiving, and rest — if managed ethically. Schor echoes this possibility, suggesting that AI-induced productivity gains could justify shorter hours without sacrificing pay. 'We can either lay off people en masse or reduce hours per job,' she says. 'Giving people more free time, while preserving income, is the smarter path.' Between burnout metrics that remain stubbornly high and rapid technological shifts, the traditional workweek may be on its last legs. But what replaces it — and who benefits — remains the central debate. The vision is tantalizing: a world where AI supports rather than supplants, where a four-day week is the norm, not the exception, and where people work to live, not live to work. As Juliet Schor reminds us, 'We're already on this path. The question now is, how fast can we walk it?'

ITR 2025: These are the 5 key streams of income liable to tax
If you are a taxpayer and are contemplating filing your income tax return (ITR) for FY2024-25, then it is vital to note that your tax return includes any or all of the five sources of income. Broadly, these five income streams include salary, rental income from property, gains on the sale of assets such as gold, securities and property, profit from a business enterprise, and all other sources such as interest on fixed deposit. Notably, a taxpayer may earn income from one or more of these sources. For instance, someone with a salary and rental income may also have a small business from which they earn a profit. Or someone who runs a business may be drawing a salary from their business unit. Likewise, someone with a business, rental income as well as interest income may also have earned some capital gain by selling a property or gold. 'Although it is not a common occurrence, there could be some cases where a taxpayer has income under all five heads. In that case, one will have to use ITR-3 or ITR-4 based on the finer details of the case,' says CA Pratibha Goyal, a Delhi-based chartered accountant and partner, PD Gupta & Company. Here, we give a lowdown on these five streams of income: I. Salary: This category includes basic salary, allowances, perquisites, and bonuses, among others. Typically, taxpayers who only have a salary as their income can file their income tax return with ITR-1. II. Income from house property: Includes rental income from owned property. Those who have income from house property can use ITR-1 to file their income tax return. III. Capital gains: Capital gains could be short term or long term and could accrue on the sale of shares, mutual funds and real estate. Taxpayers whose capital gains are less than ₹ 1.25 lakh can use ITR-1 for filing their tax return and if it is higher, one can use ITR-2 for filing their return. IV. Business or profession: This includes self-employment, freelancing and business income. It applies to entrepreneurs, freelancers and small agency owners. Those earning under a business or profession need to file their tax return under ITR-4 or ITR-5 or ITR-6 based on the category of business income. Source: PIB V. Other sources: This category includes interest income, dividends from shares, lottery winnings, and gifts. For instance, if you happen to win a bounty from CoinDCX or a TV show such as Big Boss, the earnings will fall under other sources. Visit here for all personal finance updates

State offers immense growth opportunities, says Minister Sridhar Babu
From emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, life sciences, renewable energy, logistics, food processing, aerospace, defence manufacturing to electric mobility, Telangana offers investment opportunities across sectors and industries, IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said here on Thursday. The Minister, who was speaking at Investopia Global, said this inviting industrialists from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to invest in the State. Telangana may be geographically small, but it is a State with grand ambition and lays emphasis on strong implementation. In a short span, it has risen like a phoenix and emerged as a model in development and welfare for other States, Mr. Babu said. In 2024–25, Telangana recorded a GSDP growth of 8.2%, which was higher than the national average of 7.6%. Telangana's contribution to the national GDP has exceeded 5%, the Minister's office said in a release on his address. He sought to highlight the growth potential in the backdrop of the State pursuing the goal of becoming a $3 trillion economy by 2047. In the last 18 months, the State attracted fresh investments worth ₹3.2 lakh crore. Investopia Global was jointly organised by the UAE and Telangana government. Setting up of dry ports, multimodal logistics parks, industrial corridors, net-zero industrial parks, EV zones, green logistics hubs, Regional Ring Road (RRR) and Metro Phase–2 are some of the projects that are expected to further boost industrial development in the State. The government is also set to develop Future City that will become a world hub for fintech, climate tech and smart mobility innovation. Mr. Sridhar Babu also cited the growth in data centres, global capability centres (GCCs), AI labs and aerospace clusters in the State. Investopia Global organisers said the programme seeks to advance UAE-India partnerships in sectors such as agri-tech, AI, defence and tourism in the backdrop of Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement UAE and India signed in 2021. Thursday's programme served as a platform for exploring strategic opportunities in research and development, manufacturing, and clinical innovation. The sessions touched on opportunities for cooperation in supporting entrepreneurship ecosystem and startups by relying on venture capital funding and the support provided by accelerators and incubators such as Hub71 and T-Hub.
