BBC Radio 2's Vernon Kay was notably absent from the start of his show on Tuesday, July 1, finding himself "trapped" on a malfunctioning train.
The broadcaster, aged 51, was due to begin his programme at 9.30am but encountered travel woes when his train ground to a halt. Sara Cox, who had been hosting Scott Mills' breakfast slot, extended her airtime to fill in for Kay, reports the Mirror.

On Instagram, Kay updated his followers with the news that the "train isn't training! !" and requested Cox to "hang fire". Cox, hailing from the same hometown of Bolton as Kay, informed BBC Radio 2 listeners: "Oh no, I've just realised I'm not gonna be in time for reformer Pilates."

She joked with the audience, saying: "If you just joined in and you're thinking Vernon is sounding a little extra-manly today, don't worry. It's me: Sara, from the same area obviously, though famously." For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter
Describing Kay's predicament, she added, "Vernon, poor Vernon stuck on a hot, sweaty train with no coffee, no air-con, no deodorant. So he's going to get in at some point, hopefully."
Listeners were assured by Cox that Gary Davies would step in at 10am. Upon taking the reins, Davies explained: "If you just tuned in and were wondering were Vernon is, he was on his train like usual and the train broke down and so he has been in sweltering hot heat and they had to send a rescue train which also broke down."

Kay himself kept his Instagram audience in the loop about his increasingly warm commute, posting a picture looking rather uncomfortable and captioning it with a plea for assistance: "The train isn't training," and "Hang fire @djsaracox @bbcradio2.
"Send deodorant and coffee."

Later on, Kay's journey took a turn for the better as the train's air conditioning was restored.
"Aircon is back on! ! !" he shared with his followers, alongside a photo where he appeared somewhat more cheerful.

With a heatwave hitting parts of England, London's temperatures are set to soar to 34C on Tuesday, as forecasted by the Met Office.
On the radio, Davis played two voice messages from Kay in which he expressed gratitude to the presenter for filling in and referred to him as a "gentleman".
Kay also conveyed: "We are trapped on the train. We are still not in good spirits but we are trying Gary, we really are trying. All the best."

Ken Bruce, who formerly presented on BBC Radio 2, seemed to encounter a similar predicament when his train broke down on Tuesday.
Bruce took to social media platform X to inform his audience about the delay, apologising for being late to his show on Greatest Hits Radio due to the train malfunction.
In 2023, Kay stepped into Ken Bruce's shoes to host the mid-morning weekday programme on BBC Radio 2.

Loose Women's Saira Khan says she feels like she's 'losing the plot' in honest update

Saira Khan, 55, said that sometimes it all feels 'like it's too much' in a post to fans Saira Khan has shared the struggles that have left her feeling like a 'dishevelled mess' in a candid social media post. While the TV star said her hormones might be at play, she stressed that life often feels too 'overwhelming'. ‌ Posting to Instagram yesterday, the ex-Loose Women star said: "This rant is for any woman, a mother, who works or runs her own business, is going through hormonal change, and just feels like it's too much. It's overwhelming. ‌ "And people just don't understand the f***ing effort that you put into every day and people go, 'It's brain fog'. I'm not f***ng surprised it's brain fog because my brain is thinking about the dogs, the washing up, the cooking, the cleaning, the work that I've got to do. ‌ "And then I'm thinking about the next day and it's like, I'm not saying that it's just us women that do that, but it does feel like in my household, and in many households up and down this country, if you are a strong driven woman, they pile it on." Now 55, Saira said she's taking HRT to balance her hormones, but isn't having too much success thus far. She acknowledged this as an 'underlying irritation' but also said the people around her just aren't helping enough. ‌ She explained: "And then on top of that, we're going to a festival, they're all upstairs getting ready, the dog hasn't been fed, the dog hasn't been walked, the washing's still in, things haven't been put away. "The f***ing bins are overflowing. We are going away for four days, right? I don't want to come back to a f***ing s***hole. And then I'm running a business, which I love, it's my passion, but it's in a growth spurt. So, I'm like, I've got to also be thinking about that, trying to work at the same time." Worried she's 'losing the plot', Saira told her family to go to the festival without her so she could spend some time alone before joining them. She asked her fans if they had ever experienced something similar. ‌ "The biggest rant EVER of a middle-aged working mum," Saira added in the post's caption. "If anyone else feels the same way, please let me know because I feel like it is just me having these episodes where I just cannot cope with the reconsideration! I look like a state…. But that's what I'm driven to… a dishevelled mess!" ‌ Saira's post was quickly flooded with comments from fans, many of whom also empathised with the challenges women face in households. One person wrote: "OMG Saira you just described my life!! I feel your pain." Meanwhile, another added: "I feel exactly the same and I don't have as much on my plate as you." Someone else also added: "This has been me today! "Why are there three of us in this house, but I am the only one: washing, cleansing, arranging the meals, doing the shopping, worrying about school uniforms and play dates and holiday clubs and birthday presents and holidays and the dog and myself and the car and and and and AND!!"

This week Justin Bieber gave his Instagram followers a peek inside the $26 million Beverly Hills mansion he shares with wife Hailey Bieber. On Friday the 31-year-old pop star shared a brief reel as he joined the 'slide city' internet challenge inspired by a lyric from his hit song Yukon. Justin was dressed in red basketball shorts and a white T-shirt as he slid across his hardwood kitchen floor in a pair of knit socks. While fans have been posting themselves gliding across the floor to his catchy track, off his latest album Swag, his video did not include music. Hailey, 28, made a cameo appearance as she was shown in the background wearing black leggings and a black pullover sweatshirt. The Biebers' abode boasts seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms with heated floors, according to They bought the sprawling residence, which is located in an exclusive guard-gated community, in 2020. Per the real estate outlet, its original listing noted that it is situated 'in the middle of park-like grounds' stretching over 2.5 acres. Justin recently posted photos in the couple's pristine entryway, which is punctuated with a piano. The home also offers a spacious living room, dining room, theater room, and chef's kitchen. Windows throughout permit lots of natural light into the love nest, where they're raising their son Jack Blues, who turns one this month. Outside there is a swimming pool, tennis court, and outdoor rooms featuring a barbecue, pizza oven, and koi pond. Meanwhile, the master suite has dual closets and a sitting area. In addition to their Los Angeles home base, the husband and wife purchased a $16.6 million house in La Quinta in 2023, using it as a vacation home. And their real estate portfolio also includes a property in Ontario, Canada. Justin released his surprise seventh studio album, Swag to great fanfare on July 11.
