Charles Barkley rips TNT for lack of communication: ‘I told ‘em they sucked'
'I'll tell you something really (expletive) about it too: I found out that we got traded to ESPN from ESPN,' Barkley said during a recent appearance on the 'Pardon My Take' podcast.
Barkley said he received a text message from Scott Van Pelt, Brian Windhorst, Elle Duncan and Bob Myers welcoming him to the ESPN family.
'I'm like, 'what family? What are you talking about?,'' he said.
Barkley received a call from TNT about 90 minutes later informing him of what he already knew.
'I said, 'Well you probably could have gave us a heads up.' I said, 'you traded us to ESPN and we have to hear about it on the internet. ... That's just not the way you do business,'' Barkley noted.
For months, there was speculation about TNT losing its NBA rights, but the network did, in Barkley's words, 'an awful job' keeping the employees updated on what was going on.
'One story said we lost it. The next story said we still in negotiation. Then we lost it. We're still in negotiations,' Barkley recalled. 'And TNT never came to us, like grown folks and said, 'Hey guys, we're probably going to lose the NBA,' which we could have understood.'
'I told 'em they sucked. Because there's a way you treat people,' he continued. 'Because if they had have came to us and said, 'Hey, you know what, it's a lot of money.' Because we were paying $1.2 billion a year and it went to $2.5 billion. That's a lot of money for 11 years. If they had said 'it's not a good deal,' we would've understood.'
The NBA signed an 11-year media rights deal with Disney, NBC and Amazon. The deal — rumored to be worth at least $76 million —will keep games on ESPN and ABC.
Barkley, Earnie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O'Neal will remain with 'Inside the NBA' — on the air with TNT since 1989 — when it moves to ESPN beginning the 2025-26 season.
Barkley originally was going to step away from television after TNT lost its media rights, but he will remain with his longtime TNT co-workers as the four-man crew shifts to ESPN.
'Inside the NBA' will handle pregame, halftime and postgame coverage of the NBA Finals on ABC, conference finals and the NBA Playoffs. During the regular season, it will be part of opening week coverage, as well as Christmas Day, all ABC games after Jan. 1, the final week of the season and other marquee events.

Mixed martial arts action heads back to the UFC Apex this Saturday in Las Vegas. Two rising stars from Asia headline UFC Fight Night: Japan's Tatsuro Taira and South Korea's HyunSung Park. Both look to take a step up toward a title opportunity on Saturday night. The main card and prelims (6 p.m. ET) are also available to stream on ESPN+. UFC's sixth-ranked flyweight Taira (16-1) was initially supposed to face No. 4 flyweight Amir Albazi, who pulled out of the fight earlier this week. Now he'll go up against late replacement Park (10-0) instead. Park previously had a fight scheduled on Aug. 9 against ex-world title challenger and No. 10 flyweight Steve Erceg. The South Korean's bout has been moved up a week and against a higher-ranked opponent. Advertisement Taira, 25, headlines his third straight UFC main event and is one of the top young names in the flyweight division. Twelve of his 16 victories have come by either knockout or submission. The 29-year-old Park, 'Road to UFC' Season 1 winner, is on a heater with nine straight finishes, including three inside the distance in the UFC. Only his first pro MMA bout went to the judges' scorecards. In support, the co-main event will be European lightweights Mateusz Rebecki vs. Chris Duncan. The former is coming off an exciting win against Myktybek Orolbai last fall, which was good for UFC 308 Fight of the Night honors. Also on the main card is the only ranked fight of the night: a women's bantamweight bout between No. 10 Karol Rosa of Brazil and No. 12 Nora Cornolle of France. Adam Schefter says Terry McLaurin wants more money than Steelers' DK Metcalf
Star WR Terry McLaurin set off a speculation firestorm with his trade request on Thursday — but there may now be a clearer idea of his desired contract amount, one that surpasses Steelers WR DK Metcalf. On a recent episode of The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN's Adam Schefter shared some insight on McLaurin's contract talks with the Commanders — comparing Metcalf's historic deal with the Steelers as the bar he's looking to surpass. "It's up to the two sides to figure out a way to bridge their differences," Schefter said. "But I would say that DK Metcalf was the same draft class as Terry McLaurin, he got about $33 million per year. I wouldn't think that Terry is going to take less than that — and I think he wants considerably more than that." Consider the high price tag and premium draft capital needed to acquire him, a potential Steelers trade for McLaurin may not be in the cards — despite still being considered one of the betting favorites to land the star wide receiver. Metcalf's extension wasn't the only trend-setting move made by Pittsburgh — as the Steelers made T.J. Watt the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL a few weeks ago, potentially making it difficult for the rest of the league to pay their edge rushers.
