5,500 take part in Friendship Run

Malaysia-China Friendship Run 2025, held early Sunday morning at Padang Merdeka to commemorate the 51st anniversary of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China. Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew flagged off the 7km run on behalf of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The route stretched along scenic Likas Bay, turning at the Bay 21 roundabout and ending back at Padang Merdeka. Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Chan Foong Hin, Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tan Lee Fatt, Chinese Consul General Zhu Xinglong and Malaysia-China Friendship Association Sabah President Dr Oh Ei Sun. Dr Oh said the event aimed to honour the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two nations. Christina praised the organisers and expressed hope that the run would become an attractive cultural activity for visitors. 'I hope tourists will be able to join future runs as a value-added experience. She expressed pride in joining the celebration, describing the event as a symbol of shared ideals between the two nations. Yuqi returns as hot favourite for world crown after back-to-back Japan and China Open titles
PETALING JAYA: China's Shi Yuqi has roared back into contention for the men's singles gold in the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris after regaining the world No. 1 ranking. Yuqi had slipped down to No. 2 behind Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn after a dip in form from April to June but has rediscovered his best before the world meet by capturing back-to-back titles in the Japan and China Opens. The 29-year-old's victory in China on Sunday was especially sweet as it was his first title in his home Open and confirmed his rise to the top spot again. Yuqi had defeated teammate and surprise finalist Wang Zhengxing for the crown in Changzhou. The former was ecstatic after ending his long wait for the title and is now heading for the Paris showpiece in confident mood. "My past results at the China Open were not great, so I'm extremely happy to be able to win the title this time," Yuqi told the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Yuqi will be keen to next end his wait for the coveted world crown. The Chinese ace came closest to winning the prestigious title in 2018 at home in Nanjing but was denied in the final by Japan's Kento Momota. The silver has been Yuqi's sole medal in the world meet so far. The two-time All-England champion will be under pressure to end China's nine-year men's singles title draught in the tourney. Chen Long, who triumphed in 2015, was the last Chinese to capture the gold. Since then, only Lin Dan, who was foiled by Denmark's Viktor Axelsen in 2017, has reached the final for China besides Yuqi himself. China will also be banking on world No. 4 Li Shifeng for the title. The other contenders for the gold will likely be Kunlavut, who is also the defending champion, Denmark's world No. 3 Anders Antonsen and Axelsen. The seedings for the world meet this time will be released on Aug 8, while the draw will be revealed on Aug 13.

Drums, dance and unity on full display at Vaisakhi Fest 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Vaisakhi Fest 2025 brought vibrant colour, culture, and community spirit to the Malaysia Tourism Centre, as families and visitors gathered to celebrate the Punjabi harvest festival. World Sikh Chamber of Commerce Malaysia president Jalbir Singh Riar said cultural celebrations such as Vaisakhi play a vital role in fostering unity, connection, and understanding among Malaysians of diverse backgrounds. "Unity is our strength, together, we thrive as one Malaysia," he said, adding that such festivities honour the nation's rich cultural heritage and reinforce the importance of togetherness. The event, organised by the Kuala Lumpur Sikh Sports & Recreation Club and supported by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, featured traditional performances, folk dances, a Gatka (Sikh martial art) showcase, food stalls, and family-friendly activities. Among those in attendance were Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor, who officiated the event, Tunku Besar Tampin Tunku Syed Razman Tunku Syed Idrus Al-Qadri, and the ministry's deputy secretary-general Surrendren Sathasivam, who represented Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing. Career high: Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah hit world No. 2 in BWF rankings, best Malaysian women's pair in 16 years
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — National top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah have risen to a career-high world number two in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released today. Pearly-Thinaah climbed one spot with 89,416 points, trailing only China's Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning, who remain in the top position with 111,634 points. Former national women's doubles pair, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty were the last Malaysian pair to reach this high, back in 2009. Meanwhile, another national pair, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing, broke into the top 20, moving up two spots to rank 20th with 45,090 points. In men's doubles, China Open 2025 runners-up Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik maintained their second-place ranking with 94,950 points, behind Japan Open 2025 champions Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae of South Korea with 99,405 points. Former world number one and professional pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani dropped one spot to fourth with 80,980 points. In mixed doubles, national duo Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei returned to the top three with 85,013 points, climbed one spot from fourth.
