French doctor handed 10-year jail term for abusing patients

The Sun05-07-2025
LYON: A French court sentenced a doctor to a 10-year prison term on Saturday for raping nine of his patients during medical consultations, according to a lawyer representing some of the victims.
Thirty women filed complaints against the gynaecologist, in his 60s, accusing him of sexual assault during medical exams.
The Haute-Savoie Court in eastern France found him guilty on Saturday of raping nine of the plaintiffs, said lawyer, Aurelie Zakar.
Four of the plaintiffs accused the gynaecologist of penetration with his genitals, while others complained of unjustified rectal exams and 'vaginal massages' that they said the doctor presented as medically necessary.
'The penetration suffered during consultations was not medical in nature and was, in fact, sexualised,' said Zakar.
'My three clients have been recognised as victims, they have been heard and believed. They can now rebuild their lives,' she said.
The doctor, from the eastern town of Bonneville, has denied all allegations.
The debate was particularly 'heated on the notion of intent', said a lawyer for three other plaintiffs, including two women who were minors at the time.
The defendant presented the acts 'as justified or never having happened,' said Patricia Lyonnaz, adding that all the victims came to testify at the trial.
'These are not women seeking revenge,' said Lyonnaz.
The defendant has 10 days to appeal.

France probes authorities over failure to stop doctor's child abuse

PARIS: The French judiciary has launched an investigation into the failure of authorities to check on a hospital doctor who continued abusing nearly 300, mostly underaged, patients for over a period of 25 years, before he was convicted, reported German Press Agency (dpa). The investigation is being conducted into "intentional failure to prevent crimes and offences against the physical integrity of persons," said prosecutor Stéphane Schellenberger on Friday in the western town of Lorient. Joël Le Scouarnec, a retired doctor, was sentenced to 20 years in prison at the end of May after confessing to abusing a total of 158 male and 141 female patients, with the average age of his victims being 11, between 1989 and 2014. The investigation does not target specific individuals, but instead probes into the steps taken by the health authorities, clinic managers, and other medical staff in connection with the abuse. It remains unclear why the health authorities failed to stop the abuse, despite the doctor having already received a suspended sentence concerning a child pornography case in 2005. Some of the perpetrator's colleagues had raised the alarm, but the surgeon had moved to another hospital without facing disciplinary action.

French riot police clash with migrants in coastal town

LONDON: Clashes broke out between French riot police and migrants in the early hours of the morning in a northern coastal town, PA Media/dpa reported. Pictures and footage captured by the PA news agency showed a group throwing rocks from afar in the direction of the officers early on Friday, while small fires were alight in the road near a park in Gravelines. The scene between the men - two seen by PA wearing life jackets - and the Gendarmerie and Police Nationale officers, who were equipped with shields, helmets and tear gas, lasted for about 20 minutes at around 5:30am (0330 GMT). It came after migrants were filmed running into the water and boarding a dinghy at Gravelines beach on Thursday morning. More than 22,500 people have arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel so far in 2025, a record for this point in the year. Last week, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed a one in, one out migrant returns deal in a bid to crack down on the crossings and the people smuggling gangs who operate them. Starmer met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday where he also praised Berlin's plans to strengthen laws to disrupt small boat crossings by the end of the year. — BERNAMA

Fraud probe opened into Mbappe payments to police officers

PARIS: An investigation has been opened into potentially fraudulent payments made by Kylian Mbappe to five police officers assigned to protect the French national football team, the public prosecutor's office told AFP on Thursday. The probe comes after a tip-off from the French finance ministry's anti-money laundering unit, which reported "unusual financial transactions" benefitting the five police officers. "Investigations, which are by their very nature complex in the case of financial transactions, are underway in order to establish whether any criminal offences have been committed," the public prosecutor's office said. French investigative weekly Le Canard Enchaine on Wednesday reported that the France national team captain's money was used to "pay under the table for private services", to the tune of 180,300 euros ($209,000). The Real Madrid striker's entourage issued a statement saying "everything was done in compliance with the rules." It added that Mbappe had "always chosen to donate in full his bonuses" for playing for France at international level. "It's what he did after the 2022 World Cup, with complete transparency," the statement continued, saying the money went to charitable organisations and security personnel that accompanied the team.
