Minjee Lee wins Women's PGA Championship for third major title
AUSTRALIAN Minjee Lee fired a gritty two-over-par 74 to win the Women's PGA Championship on Sunday, capturing her third major title by three strokes on another demanding day in Frisco, Texas.
The 29-year-old from Perth added the title to her 2021 Evian Championship and the US Women's Open title she won in 2022, finishing with a four-under-par total of 284.
American Auston Kim and Thailand's Chanettee Wannasaen tied for second on on one-under 287.
'A lot of patience out there today,' said Lee, who started the day with a four-shot lead after a brilliant, bogey-free round on Saturday but had three bogeys in her first six holes.
'I just felt like some shots were going my way and some shots weren't,' Lee said. 'I just said stick to my game plan. It was a battle against myself pretty much, especially with how tough the conditions were this whole week -- not just today, just amplified today because it's a major Sunday.'
Lee made her first birdie of the day at the par-five ninth, where she missed the green but chipped to two feet.
She gave a stroke back at the 10th, but after rolling in a tense nine-foot putt for par at 13 she drilled a nine-footer for birdie at the 14th to boost her lead back to three strokes.
She added a birdie at 15, holing a five-and-a-half-foot putt, remaining in control from there despite a last bogey at 16.
Through it all, Lee said, she was keeping an eye on her nearest rivals while trying to maintain her focus on another hot, wind-whipped day at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, north of Dallas.
'Pretty much I saw every single leaderboard and I knew exactly where I was pretty much all of today,' she said. 'I just tried to check the scores and then I just come back to each shot and try and execute it the best that I could.
'I really played within myself today.'
Kim, a 24-year-old American ranked 98th in the world and seeking a first LPGA victory, applied as much pressure as she could.
After a birdie at the par-five first she strung together three birdies in a row at the seventh, eighth and ninth -- landing her tee shot at the par-three eighth a foot from the pin.
Hard course
'I just wanted to charge and get as close as I could to the top,' said Kim, who posted her best finish in a major. Prior to this tournament, she'd missed more major cuts (five) than she had made (four).
'I knew that the course is hard. I just played my percentages and tried to capitalize on good shots today.'
Chanattee seized her share of second with a 68 highlighted by an eagle at 15, where she found the green with her tee shot and rolled in a 14-foot putt.
World number two Jeeno Thitikul, who led after each of the first two rounds and started the day in solo second four behind Lee, was never able to get much going.
She closed with a three-over-par 75 that left her tied for fourth on one-over 289 with Japan's Chisato Iwai, who carded a one-under 71.
The grueling conditions all week took a toll on some of the game's top names.
World number three Lydia Ko, who started her week with a four-over 75, carded a one-under 71 on Sunday to finish in a group sharing 12th on 293.
World number one Nelly Korda fired a final-round 76 for a share of 19th on 294 and world number four Yin Ruoning was in a group on 295 after a closing 76.

Textor said his focus would shift towards broader responsibilities within Eagle Football Group which also includes Botafogo and formerly included a 43% stake in English club Crystal Palace, sold earlier this week. "I am going to spend a lot more time focusing on Eagle Global, coming back frankly a bit more to Botafogo," he said. "I've got very good partners in the Eagle Football Group shareholders who are going to take a lead on dealing with some of the issues that I have frankly not been very good at dealing with." Despite Lyon's relegation, Textor highlighted the club's recent achievements, including back-to-back qualifications for the Europa League, and reassured fans about their financial stability. "We've never been more liquid in cash. But there are things in the process I did that disappointed the governing bodies there that we need to fix," Textor said. "We did pass through the financial sustainability review with UEFA, which is quite a comprehensive process. So the fact that we didn't pass through France has more to do with some of the specific elements that I brought to the table that I should have improved." Textor hinted at a potential acquisition in the United Kingdom to replace the Crystal Palace stake. "We have our U.K. strategy where we need to look at who our new club is. What are we going to buy there? What's the partnership? Because it's that collaboration between the clubs that's been so successful for us," he said. Norris led every phase, going fastest in Friday and Saturday practice, a decisive response to a poor qualifying in Canada and his collision with championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri in that race two weeks ago. That incident, which he accepted blame for, left Norris 22 points behind Piastri. "Even in Canada, after reviewing the weekend with Lando and his engineers, we always said the speed was there," Stella told Sky Sports television. "When he had the little contact with the wall in qualifying, he was on track for a pole position. And in the race, he was one of the fastest, if not the fastest car. The speed was always there. We needed to polish the execution. "I'm really proud of Lando today. Not only he scored a pole position, but it's a dominant pole position, a pretty remarkable lap time." Norris was more than half a second faster than his closest rival, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, on the shortest lap of the season. The Briton said the upgraded car felt strong and quick. Qualifying, a strong point last year, has become more of a problem this season, but Norris seemed to have rectified some of the issues. "It was easily my best qualifying of the year from a delivery point of view from every single lap I did. I still made a couple of mistakes here and there, but none that cost me a lap or anything," he said. "I think on deliveries, consistency and of course putting it in when it counts in Q3 (it) was easily the best lap I've done for this whole season, probably even better than Monaco, honestly. "Maybe not as exciting a lap as Monaco, but definitely a better put-together lap than I did there." Norris won from pole in Monaco, with the fastest lap, as he did in the Australian season-opener. Norris savours finding 'the old me' in taking pole at Austrian GP
SPIELBERG, Austria: Lando Norris celebrated a personal moment to savour on Saturday by claiming a dominant pole position for McLaren at the Austrian Grand Prix, ending a fortnight of self-recrimination since colliding with team-mate Oscar Piastri in Canada. The 25-year-old Briton, who ended Max Verstappen's run of five consecutive poles at the Red Bull Ring circuit owned by his team, delivered a stunning late lap in one minute and 3.971 seconds to outpace Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by half-a-second. Verstappen, frustrated by a yellow flag when Pierre Gasly spun in his Alpine, qualified seventh. "I did what I planned to do and when I plan to do something and it goes right, it normally goes very, very well," said Norris who told the team on radio that it was "nice to see the old me back now and then!" "I am very happy – a good day and it's been a good weekend for me so far. So, hopefully we can keep it up. "It's a long season. So, I savour this moment, especially because some of my tougher moments have been in qualifying and to put a lap in like today and performance like this weekend, like I have, is pleasing for myself. He added that he had enjoyed a feeling "that I have missed for quite a long time in terms of performance and lap time and it is the best feeling that a driver can ask for." Norris said the team had been working hard to support and guide him and he's "been working hard in the simulator so to get there and to move in the right direction is reassuring for myself and for the rest of the team." Norris had arrived in Spielberg under pressure to atone for his error in Montreal and reboot his challenge for the drivers' championship in which he is 22 points behind leader and team-mate Piastri, who was third in qualifying on Saturday. The 24-year-old Australian was frustrated at being unable to complete a second flying lap in Q3 but determined to improve and challenge at the front. "For me, it's the fact that I didn't get to start (the lap), that was the problem. I had Gasly's spin at the last corner, so I didn't even open my second lap," he said. "Lando has been very quick all weekend, and it would've been a tough challenge, but I think we easily had enough pace in the car this weekend to be on the front row. "It's always a shame when you don't even get the chance, but we can still have a good race from there. Sometimes it's just not your day." However, the Melbourne-native still has his eye on claiming his sixth Grand Prix win of the season on Sunday. "Our pace this weekend has looked very strong. The Ferrari pace looked good as well, which was a bit of a surprise," he said.
