Broncos roster: RB Blake Watson (No. 25) fighting for spot in crowded backfield

USA Today23-06-2025
Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at second-year running back Blake Watson, No. 25.
Before the Broncos: Watson (5-9, 195 pounds) was a five-year player in college, playing for Old Dominion from 2018-2022 and a lone year at Memphis. Watson played in 36 games for Old Dominion (ODU did not play any games in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), with 398 carries for 2,146 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns. Watson also had 60 receptions for 448 yards and three touchdowns in his time with the Monarchs.
In his lone year with the Tigers, Watson had a productive season, hitting career-high marks across the board. In 2023, Watson rushed for 1,152 yards on 192 carries and 14 touchdowns, catching 53 passes for 480 yards and three touchdowns. Watson's 14 rushing touchdowns and 17 total touchdowns both led the American Conference
Broncos tenure: Watson was signed by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent after the 2024 NFL draft. He had a quiet 2024, playing in two games for the Broncos, with only four carries for 10 yards and one catch for 13 yards.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Probably a practice squad candidate. Watson finds himself in a very crowded running back room in 2025. Watson will have to battle for his life against newly signed running back J.K. Dobbins, rookie RJ Harvey, Audric Estime, Jaleel McLaughlin and Tyler Badie. If Watson can't make it on the 53-man roster, he would likely be a top candidate for the practice squad.

Another teammate joins Cobbo in leaving Broncos as Roosters lose star's brother

The Brisbane Broncos have reportedly lost another outside-back from their NRL squad, with uncapped winger Israel Leota set to switch to rugby union. The is reporting that 20-year-old Leota will join Super Rugby outfit Moana Pasifika in 2026 after being convinced to switch by All Blacks legend Tana Umaga. Leota is yet to make his first-grade debut with the Broncos, but is viewed as a talented prospect in the making. The hulking winger has scored 18 tries in 21 games with the Broncos' feeder club Souths Logan in Queensland Cup, and has been knocking on the door of a first-grade debut. But the 20-year-old has been stuck behind the likes of Selwyn Cobbo, Jesse Arthars, Gehamat Shibasaki, Josiah Karapani and Deine Mariner in Brisbane. He's now reportedly decided to pursue a career in New Zealand rugby after playing the rival code as a teenager. 'I went to union for a year because I was going to a GPS school and I switched and played some AFL,' Leota told the QRL website in 2023. 'I only came back to playing league when I was 16, went to Souths Acacia Ridge to play with my mates and now I'm here. As a young kid growing up, every young kid from Queensland wants to play for the Broncos and Queensland.' Leota joins Cobbo and Latrell Siegwalt as Broncos squad players set to depart the club in 2026. Cobbo has signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins after falling out of favour with coach Michael Maguire, while back-up fullback Siegwalt has reportedly signed with South Sydney. In a flurry of moves around club-land on Thursday, Sam Walker's younger brother Tyson reportedly signed with North Queensland. The 17-year-old playmaker was part of the Roosters' premiership-winning SG Ball Cup team (Under-21s) this year, but a future at the Bondi club appeared unlikely. The Roosters have a litany of halves options, with older brother Sam set to play halfback when he returns from a broken hand. Young guns Hugo Savala and Sandon Smith have been playing brilliantly in 2025, while the Roosters are also expected to sign Daly Cherry-Evans for 2026. The Cowboys have also poached rising Roosters playmaker Tyson Walker, younger brother of Sam starred in the Roosters' SG Ball premiership-winning side this year, but with a crowded halves room at Bondi, he's opted to head north to join North Queensland.(DT) — NRLCentral (@centralNRL) July 3, 2025 RELATED: Toby Sexton in $1 million club switch to replace premiership hero Mal Meninga snares key figure from Titans to join Perth Bears Speaking earlier this year, Tyson said it was a dream of his to play first-grade alongside brother Sam. "I come from a long background of footy players, but it's been really good having my brother here to help me out and get away from home, which is a big step," Tyson told . "Definitely still a long way to the NRL, but I've known for a long time that I wanted to play rugby league. That's pretty much all I want to do. I don't have any other aspirations for now, that's for sure." Sam and Tyson's father Ben played for the Broncos, Manly, Northern Eagles and South Sydney Rabbitohs. Their uncles Chris and Shane were also NRL stars, with Chris playing State of Origin for Queensland. Tyson is the latest young gun to depart the Roosters. Mikey Nassar, who played fullback in the same SG Ball Cup team that won the 2025 premiership, is now at the Bulldogs.

Broncos Star Edge Rusher Nik Bonitto Told to Bet on Himself in Hunt for New Contract

Broncos Star Edge Rusher Nik Bonitto Told to Bet on Himself in Hunt for New Contract originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Denver Broncos had one of the best defenses in the NFL in 2024. They allowed the third-fewest points and seventh-fewest yards per game in the NFL, and were buoyed by a pass-rush that generated 63 sacks in the regular season — the most in the NFL. Advertisement A catalyst for the Broncos' success up front was edge rusher Nik Bonitto. The former 2022 second-round pick had a career-high 13.5 sacks in the regular season, the third-most in the league, and earned a Second-Team All-Pro nomination for the first time. Bonitto is a free agent after the 2025 season, and one NFL analyst had some key advice heading into a big year. Appearing on the 'DNVR Broncos Podcast', NFL Analyst Brian Baldinger joined the show to discuss whether or not the Broncos should pay Bonitto this offseason and offered some insight on the situation. Denver Broncos linebacker Nik Bonitto (15) celebrates his Chenoy-Imagn Images 'It's all business. He's put two real good years back-to-back. I would say the breakout came in 23, but certainly last year.' Baldinger said, before highlighting that as Bonitto's play grows, so does the attention that offenses give to stopping him. 'The chips that are coming, the slides that are coming, all of those things are now going to be coming Nik's way.' Advertisement As much as Baldinger hyped up Bonitto, he pointed out the fact that nothing comes for free in the NFL now. 'Teams aren't just going to throw you the top money at the edge rushing position, they're going to make you fight for it. Most teams are like that.' And that's the way the NFL works. Extensions have to be earned at the top level, especially when big money is being thrown around. The Broncos know Bonitto and his talent, but he has to keep working. However, Baldinger notably added this, 'I always feel like players should bet on themselves.' That's key. If Bonitto wants to be paid by the Broncos this season, he has to carry on being the player that got him into this position. He knows his worth, as does everyone who watched him dominate on the field in 2024. Losing Bonitto would be a blow to a Broncos team that is vying for the playoffs once again after finishing with a 10-7 record in 2024, and making the postseason for the first time since 2015. A deal might not be too far away, especially if Bonitto continues to bet on himself. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Chicago Cubs are off to their best start since the ever-so memorable 2016 season that saw the team break all the curses in the world. Chicago is a true threat in the National League this season and is well on its way to a postseason berth for the first time since the COVID-shortened 2020 season. The team will need upgrades prior to the trade deadline and team president Jed Hoyer has made it clear what those plans will be. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 01: President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer of the Chicago Cubs is interviewed prior to the game against the Cleveland Guardians at Wrigley Field on July 01, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 01: President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer of the Chicago Cubs is interviewed prior to the game against the Cleveland Guardians at Wrigley Field on July 01, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois."We've had a lot of conversations with teams," Hoyer said in a 25-minute meeting with reporters on-site in Chicago. "We'll continue to have a lot of conversations, but these things ramp up." More often than not, the trade deadline truly doesn't ramp up until after the All-Star break is complete and front offices begin to look ahead to the second half of the season. Chicago certainly needs replacements on its bench unit as well as both starting and relief pitching. Hoyer knows that is the case and told reporters upgrading those positions of need is his main focus. "You're going to have injuries in the second half, and you have to be able to address those," Hoyer told reporters. "We're also looking to kind of raise our replacement level and raise our talent level. And that's really the challenge, I think, acquiring guys that provide depth. I know we can do that" There have already been rumors surrounding Chicago's interest in starting pitchers Edward Cabrera, Sandy Alcantara and Mitch Keller. There have also been rumors surrounding the Cubs' interest in current Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes and closer David Bednar. Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez has been a name floated around on the hot stove and that seems to be the one player that all of Cubs fans across social media can agree on wanting to bring to the North Side of Chicago. Whatever the decisions may be, it is clear that Hoyer and the rest of the Chicago front office are going to make all the moves to help the Cubs make a run to the World Series for the first time in nine seasons.
