Israeli forces kill young Palestinian, arrest 60 during night raids in West Bank

Arab News18-06-2025
LONDON: Israeli forces killed a 21-year-old Palestinian and arrested at least 60 people during night raids on Tuesday across various towns in the occupied West Bank, including a woman, children, and former political prisoners.
The Palestinian Authority's affiliated groups, the Commission of Prisoners' Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner's Society, announced on Wednesday that Israeli forces have arrested 160 Palestinians in the West Bank so far this week.
Some of those arrested were later released following interrogation.
Moataz Al-Hajjleh, 21, from the town of Al-Walaja village near Bethlehem, was killed during an Israeli raid of the area overnight.
Israeli forces conducted arrests and investigations during raids in several Palestinian governorates, including Nablus, Jenin and Ramallah.
Israeli forces have turned dozens of Palestinian houses into military points after forcibly expelling their inhabitants in the Jenin environs, the Wafa news agency reported.
At the same time, several villages had their entrances closed with earth mounds or gates.
The prisoners' groups added that ongoing mass detention operations by Israeli forces 'continue to be the most prominent, consistent, and systematic policies employed by the occupation to undermine any escalating resistance against it.'

OIC Condemns Statements by Israeli Officials on Imposing Sovereignty Over West Bank

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the statements by officials in the Israeli occupation government calling for annexing and imposing the alleged Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank. It is considered a flagrant violation of the resolutions of international legitimacy and international law, and an attempt to undermine international efforts geared toward a two-state solution, SPA reported. The OIC warned of the dangerousness of such statements and continued incitement pursued by the Israeli occupation's leaders and extremist settlers against the Palestinian people as well as their land and sanctities. It reiterated its call for the international community to recognize the State of Palestine, endorse its full membership at the United Nations, and take the required measures to end occupation and illegal settlement of the occupied Palestinian territories pursuant to the relevant UN resolutions and the advisory opinion by the International Court of Justice.

Saudi Arabia Condemns Israeli Calls for Sovereignty over Palestine's West Bank

Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the calls of Israeli ministers to apply full sovereignty over the occupied West Bank. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying the Kingdom 'condemns and denounces' the statements made by Israeli officials calling for the imposition of sovereignty over the Palestinian territory of the West Bank. It added saying that such actions violate international legitimacy resolutions, reiterating the Kingdom's firm rejection of any attempts to expand settlements on Palestinian land. It stressed the importance of holding the Israeli authorities accountable to international resolution. The Kingdom reaffirmed its full support for the Palestinian people in their pursuit of their legitimate rights, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. Cabinet ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party called on Wednesday for Israel to annex the Israeli-occupied West Bank before the Knesset recesses at the end of the month.

Israeli Likud Party Ministers Urge Netanyahu to Annex West Bank

Cabinet ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party called on Wednesday for Israel to annex the Israeli-occupied West Bank before the Knesset recesses at the end of the month. They issued a petition ahead of Netanyahu's meeting next week with US President Donald Trump, where discussions are expected to center on a potential 60-day Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal with Hamas. The petition was signed by 15 cabinet ministers and Amir Ohana, speaker of the Knesset, Israel's parliament. There was no immediate response from the prime minister's office. Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, long a confidant of Netanyahu, did not sign the petition. He has been in Washington since Monday for talks on Iran and Gaza. "We ministers and members of Knesset call for applying Israeli sovereignty and law immediately on Judea and Samaria," they wrote, using the biblical names for the West Bank captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war. Their petition cited Israel's recent achievements against both Iran and Iran's allies and the opportunity afforded by the strategic partnership with the US and support of Trump. It said the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel demonstrated that the concept of Jewish settlement blocs alongside the establishment of a Palestinian state poses an existential threat to Israel. "The task must be completed, the existential threat removed from within, and another massacre in the heart of the country must be prevented," the petition stated. Most countries regard Jewish settlements in the West Bank, many of which cut off Palestinian communities from one another, as a violation of international law. With each advance of Israeli settlements and roads, the West Bank becomes more fractured, further undermining prospects for a contiguous land on which Palestinians could build a sovereign state long envisaged in Middle East peacemaking. Israel's pro-settler politicians have been emboldened by the return to the White House of Trump, who has proposed Palestinians leave Gaza, a suggestion widely condemned across the Middle East and beyond.
