: Goa's town and country planning department has spent Rs 8.7 crore of taxpayers' money on legal costs over the last five years. The money has been spent on lawyer's fees to defend the department's policies, which were challenged through PILs filed by NGOs and environmentalists.
The TCP department's move to permit the change of zone through Section 16(b), 17(2) and now 39(A) of the Town and Country Planning Act has been challenged by various organisations before the high court of Bombay at Goa. The department has been defending its stance despite the courts frowning on the policies.
The high court of Bombay at Goa has passed directions against Section 17(2) and the Outline Development Plans for the five villages of Calangute, Candolim, Parra, Arpora and Nagoa.
'Both the orders have been challenged by govt before the Supreme Court of India, vide Special Leave Petitions (Civil), which are under process,' said Rane in a written statement before the assembly on Thursday.
Rane released the data in response to a question from RG MLA Viresh Borkar.
Rane also informed the assembly that the department is involved as an interested party in several other civil cases where govt pays the fees of the legal counsel, consultants and govt advocates.

Harsh Goenka uses harsh words for Hotmail's Sabeer Bhaita, says India doesn't need sermons from those who packed up and left

A heated debate ignited between Sabeer Bhatia and Harsh Goenka after Bhatia criticized the Indian government's labeling of dissent as 'anti-national.' Goenka retorted, questioning Bhatia's right to comment from abroad, emphasizing the contributions of those who reside and work in India. Bhatia's previous criticisms of India's education system and economic disparities have also fueled the ongoing social media discourse. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads What did Harsh Goenka say? Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads A heated exchange recently erupted between Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia and billionaire Harsh Goenka over the use of the term 'anti-national'. On July 31, 2025, Bhatia posted a sharp critique on social media, condemning how speaking the truth in India is often branded as "anti-national".'Say India is unsafe for women - you're anti-national. Question inflated economic numbers - you're anti-national. Call out elected leaders' lies - you're anti-national. Mention lost aircraft - you're anti-national. So if truth = anti-national… then who's a national? The one who lies to you?' Bhatia wrote in an X Goenka in reply to to Bhatia's post said, 'India doesn't need sermons from those who packed up and left,' questioning his right to comment from abroad.'Living in California and lecturing a billion Indians back home? We live here. We vote, work, pay taxes. We love this country- and we'll fix what's broken. India doesn't need sermons from those who packed up and left,' Goenka replied to Sabeer recent months, Sabeer Bhatia has sparked conversations on social media with his sharp criticism of India's education system and economic progress. On June 10, Bhatia took to X to post: "Instead of hanging your head in shame that 415 million people in India survive on $3.10/day [approx. Rs 265/day], you brag about being the world's 4th largest economy. Shame on you."Earlier this year, during an interview on the NNP podcast, the Hotmail co-founder said that instead of nurturing original thinkers, India is churning out an "army of useless kids" who are trained merely to follow instructions. 'We live in a conformist society—people are often told, 'Listen to others, do what they say',' Bhatia said, questioning, 'But why follow a path that's already been walked?'He further argued that the country's education system is structured to create obedient workers rather than visionaries capable of challenging and transforming systems.

NDA ally Chandrababu is first CM to flag US tariffs: ‘Must take precautions considering impact on agri exports'

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has said that his government will take precautions considering the impact of the US tariffs imposed on India. Rolling out the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme aimed at farmers, a part of the 'Super Six' promises guaranteed by the TDP in its election manifesto, which aims to give ₹20,000 per year to farmers in the state with support from the Centre, Naidu said, 'As the US has imposed 25% tariffs on India, we must take precautions considering the impact on agricultural exports.' On July 31, US President Donald Trump announced the tariffs on India, and warned of additional penalties. Naidu, whose Telugu Desam Party is an NDA partner both at the state and the Centre, is the first CM to raise the issue. While addressing farmers in Darsi in Prakasam district, Naidu assured aqua farmers that his government will extend all help to them to overcome the 25 per cent US tariffs. 'My government is providing support to aqua farmers by providing them electricity at Rs 1.50 per unit. The increase in tariff by the US will burden aqua farmers in the state. We have taken it into consideration and we act upon it. I have called for a meeting with all aqua farmers. We will discuss with them the issue and prepare an action plan to absorb that extra burden,'' he said. In April, Naidu had written to the Centre to shield the state's aquaculture products and aqua sector from the heavy tariffs being levied by the Trump administration. In a letter to the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, the Chief Minister asked the Centre to come to the rescue of aqua farmers by making efforts to exempt aqua products from this additional duty. Informing the Union Minister that the fisheries sector is playing a crucial role in the State's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Naidu said that the Centre should stand by the aqua farmers when they are in deep crisis. The Chief Minister mentioned in the letter that the US Administration has imposed a 27 per cent import duty on marine food exports from India. In 2023-24 fiscal marine food products worth $2.55 billion were exported from India to the US of which shrimp alone accounted for 92 per cent, he stated. The US is imposing a duty of only 10 per cent on exporters like Ecuador which indirectly harms India while benefiting such countries, he wrote.

Karnataka Minister KJ George calls IT raids 'routine exercise', refuses link to smart meter contract, says there is no connection...

Karnataka's Minister for Energy KJ George New Delhi: In a major development, Karnataka's Minister for Energy KJ George refuted any connection between recent Income Tax department raids at a prominent tech park in Bengaluru and the state's smart meter initiative or the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) and said that they were 'a routine regulatory exercise' related to IT filings and had nothing to do with any government project. In a firm statement issued via his official social media handle, the minister termed the allegations circulating in a section of the media as 'completely baseless, misleading, and politically motivated.' 'There is no connection whatsoever between the smart meter project or BESCOM and the Income Tax department's raids,' George said. 'I strongly condemn this attempt to mislead the public and draw false links to the Energy Department.' This comes after the Income Tax Department conducted surveys from July 28 to 30 at multiple locations connected to George and real estate tycoon Jitu Virwani of the Embassy Group, including Golflinks Software Park Private Limited in Bengaluru. KJ George Issues Statement: In view of the misinformation being circulated regarding myself and the companies under my chairmanship, purportedly in connection with the #SmartMeterInitiative and the #EnergyDepartment of the Government of Karnataka, we wish to issue the following clarification: The recent interaction with the #IncomeTax Department was a routine regulatory exercise solely pertaining to the verification of our companies' income tax filings. There is no connection whatsoever to any government project or department, including the #SmartMeter program or the #EnergyDepartment. Our teams extended full cooperation to the authorities during this scheduled compliance review, consistent with our long-standing commitment to transparency and adherence to the law. We categorically reject and strongly refute any speculative or misleading claims suggesting otherwise. We urge all concerned to exercise discretion and refrain from spreading or endorsing baseless allegations. BJP's Allegation: To recall, in March this year, the Bharatiya Janata Party alleged a massive Rs 15,568 crore scam in Karnataka's smart meter procurement process. The saffron camp accused the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government of favouritism and irregularities in the tendering process. Echoing this stance, Golflinks Software Park clarified in an official statement that the survey conducted under Section 133A of the Income Tax Act was routine in nature and 'has no connection to public officials, state government departments, BESCOM contracts, or smart meter-related matters.'
