What is tokenization and is it crypto's next big thing?

NEW YORK — Tokenization has long been a buzzword for crypto enthusiasts, who have been arguing for years that blockchain-based assets will change the underlying infrastructure of financial markets.
The technology is seen as rapidly increasing in coming years, especially in the U.S., helped by the passage of three new bills. President Donald Trump's administration has eased regulation of the broader crypto industry, paving the way for a boom in the valuation of companies in the sector and the rapid growth of crypto-related securities.
However, the growth of the market for tokenized assets has been far slower than expected in recent years, with many projects still in their infancy or not yet live.
How does tokenization work?
The term 'tokenization' is used in a variety of ways. But it generally refers to the process of turning financial assets - such as bank deposits, stocks, bonds, funds and even real estate - into crypto assets.
This means creating a record on digital ledger blockchain that represents the original asset. These blockchain-based assets, or 'tokens,' can be held in crypto wallets and traded on blockchain, just like cryptocurrencies.
Where do stablecoins come in?
Stablecoins can be seen as an example of tokenization. They are a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value by being pegged to a real-world currency, typically the U.S. dollar. The issuer holds one U.S. dollar in reserve for every dollar-pegged crypto token it creates.
Stablecoins are blockchain-based tokens acting as a proxy for an asset that already exists outside the blockchain.
They allow people to move money across borders without interacting with the banking system. While critics say that this makes them useful for criminals who want to avoid banks' anti-money laundering checks, stablecoin issuers say that they are a lifeline for people in countries without a developed payments system.
Are tokenized assets taking off?
Yes and no. Stablecoins have grown in recent years, with the market estimated to be worth about US$256 billion, according to crypto data provider CoinMarketCap, and expected to touch US$2 trillion by 2028, according to Standard Chartered.
But banks have talked for years about creating tokenized versions of other types of assets, which they say will make trading more efficient, faster and cheaper, and those 'tokens' have struggled to gain traction.
While there have been individual issuances, there is not a liquid secondary market for these kinds of assets.
One impediment to trading traditional assets via blockchain is that banks are working on their own private networks, making it difficult to trade across platforms.
What are the pros of tokenization?
Some proponents of the crypto industry have said tokenization can improve liquidity in the financial system. Illiquid assets like real estate could be traded more easily if they are broken up into small digital tokens.
It is also expected to improve access to asset classes that are typically out of reach of smaller investors by creating a cheaper entry point.
Which companies are interested in tokenization?
Some major global banks, including Bank of America and Citi have said they could explore launching tokenized assets, including stablecoins.
Asset manager BlackRock is also doubling down on the tokenization boom, and has highlighted its ambition of becoming the largest cryptocurrency manager in the world by 2030.
Coinbase, the largest U.S. crypto exchange, is seeking permission from the SEC to offer 'tokenized equities' to its customers.
How does new regulation help tokenization?
Since stablecoins themselves are tokens and seen as one of the biggest drivers of the growth of tokenization, the new stablecoin law will end up boosting the proliferation of tokenization, experts say.
The new market structure bill, known as the Clarity Act, is expected to establish a clear framework that could enable stablecoins and other crypto tokens to become more widely used.
What are the risks?
Some analysts say the hype around tokenization might be premature and caution that the rapidly growing crypto ecosystem could experience near-term turbulence due to the potential risks of a big decline in prices.
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has warned stablecoins pose risks for monetary policy and financial stability.
Some critics of the industry warn the frenzy around the new technology could introduce new systemic risks, especially in the absence of stringent regulation. They also say there is no reason why blockchain should be any more efficient than the electronic ledgers and trading systems already used in financial markets.
Buyers of third-party tokens, which are issued by unaffiliated third parties - such as crypto exchange Kraken - that have custody of securities, could be exposed to counterparty risks, and regulators are sounding notes of caution.
Earlier in July, Hester Peirce, a commissioner at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission who has frequently spoken positively about cryptocurrency, said tokenized securities would not be able to circumvent existing securities laws.
More than half of the world's U.S. dollar stablecoins are issued by a single company, Tether, which says it manages US$160 billion in reserves, but has not undergone a financial audit.

Wall Street rallies and US stocks recover much of Friday's wipeout

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are rallying and recovering much of their sharp losses from last week, when worries about how President Donald Trump's tariffs may be punishing the economy sent a shudder through Wall Street. The S&P 500 jumped 1.2% in morning trading to claw back more than two thirds of Friday's drop. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 396 points, or 0.9%, as of 10:15 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 1.6% higher. Idexx Laboratories helped lead the way and soared 23.7% after the seller of veterinary instruments and other health care products reported a stronger profit for the spring than analysts expected. It also raised its forecast for profit over the full year. Tyson Foods likewise delivered a bigger-than-expected profit for the latest quarter, and the company behind the Jimmy Dean and Hillshire Farms brands climbed 3.9%. They helped offset a 2.7% drop for Berkshire Hathaway after Warren Buffett's company reported less than half as much profit in the second quarter from a year earlier. The drop was due in part to the falling value of its investment in Kraft Heinz. The pressure is on U.S. companies to deliver bigger profits after their stock prices shot to record after record recently. The jump in stock prices from a low point in April raised criticism that the broad market had become too expensive. Stocks just sank to their worst week since May not so much on that criticism but on worries that Trump's tariffs may be hitting the U.S. economy following a longer wait than some economists had expected. Job growth slowed sharply last month, and the unemployment rate worsened to 4.2%. Trump reacted to the disappointing jobs numbers by firing the person in charge of compiling them. He also continued his criticism of the Federal Reserve, which could lower interest rates in an effort to shoot adrenaline into the economy. The Fed has instead been keeping rates on pause this year, in part because lower rates can send inflation higher, and Trump's tariffs may be set to increase prices for U.S. households. Friday's stunningly weak jobs report did raise expectations on Wall Street that the Fed may have to cut interest rates at its next meeting in September. That caused Treasury yields to slump in the bond market, and they were mixed on Monday. The yield on the 10-year Treasury edged down to 4.22% from 4.23% late Friday. The two-year yield, which moves more closely with expectations for Fed action, edged up to 3.70% from 3.69%. 'In our view, if the Fed starts to cut rates at its September meeting, we believe this would be supportive for markets,' according to David Lefkowitz, head of US equities at UBS Global Wealth Management. Such hopes, combined with profit reports from big U.S. companies that have so far come in better than expected, could help steady a U.S. stock market that may have been due for some turbulence. Before Friday, it had gone more than a month without a swing of 1%, either up or down. This upcoming week may feature fewer fireworks on Wall Street following last week's jobs report and profit updates from several of the U.S. stock market's most influential companies. This week's highlights will likely include earnings reports from The Walt Disney Co., McDonald's and Caterpillar, along with updates on U.S. business activity. On Wall Street, Wayfair helped lead the way with a 6.8% jump after the retailer of furniture and home decor said accelerating growth helped it make more in profit and revenue during the spring than analysts expected. Tesla rose 2.8% after awarding CEO Elon Musk 96 million shares of restricted stock valued at approximately $29 billion. The move, which comes just six months after a judge ordered the company to revoke his massive pay package, could remove potential worries that Musk may leave the company. They helped offset a drop of 9.3% for On Semiconductor, which only matched analysts' expectations for profit in the latest quarter. The company, which sells to the auto and industrial industries, said it's beginning to see 'signs of stabilization' across its customers. Boeing slipped 1.5% after workers who build fighter jets for the troubled aerospace giant went on strike overnight. About 3,200 workers at Boeing facilities in the Midwest voted to reject a modified four-year labor agreement with company, their union said. The vote followed members' rejection last week of an earlier proposal from the troubled aerospace giant which had included a 20% wage increase over four years. In stock markets abroad, indexes rose across much of Europe and Asia. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.9%, and France's CAC 40 climbed 1%, while Japan's Nikkei 225 was an outlier with a drop of 1.2%. This version corrects to say that the U.S. stock market had its worst week since May last week, not April.
