PHNOM PENH: Minister of National Defence Tea Seiha has made it clear that Cambodia may not possess fighter jets or warships but has the capability to defend the country, including air defence systems, anti-tank guns and coastal defence weapons.
Speaking on Friday (June 20) morning, he said Cambodia has collaborated with friendly partners to upgrade its defence capabilities, not to invade others, and emphasised that Cambodia does not have fighter jets capable of reaching Bangkok.
"Thailand posts photos of their missiles, fighter jets, large artillery pieces and warships, and weapons for land, sea and air.
"What does Cambodia have? Let me clarify, Cambodia has no fighter jets or warships because Cambodia focuses only on defensive capabilities. We have air defence guns, anti-tank guns, and coastal defence guns," he said.
'Cambodia has worked with some friendly partners to enhance our military capabilities solely for national defence, absolutely not to build up weapons for invading others,' he added.
Seiha's remarks come amid ongoing tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
Recently, the defence ministry noted that Thailand has increased activities such as deploying drones, digging trenches, mobilising weapons and support equipment, constructing infrastructure and increasing troop numbers along the border of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces.
The ministry stated that these actions pose a serious threat to the peace and security of both countries.
On June 19, a spokesperson for Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledged that earthworks were being constructed, but claimed they were conducted within Thai territory.
Seiha emphasised that Cambodia does not want war with any country and has referred the border dispute with Thailand to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a peaceful resolution.
He noted that the ICJ's decision may not guarantee territorial gains for either side, as it depends on the court's findings.
He added that the outcome from the ICJ would ensure peace and clarity regarding the border between the two nations.
He further stated that resolving the issue through a 2000 memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been impossible, and Thailand and Cambodia have not conducted joint border surveys since 2012 or 2013, primarily due to using different maps.
He also claimed that over the past decade, since bilateral talks through the Joint Boundary Commission stalled, Thailand has violated the memorandum 695 times, on a provisional basis.
'I say provisionally because there could be more, such as road construction and patrolling without notifying Cambodia,' he said. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

Thai finance chief sees US cutting 36% tariff on fresh proposal

BANGKOK (Bloomberg): Thailand expects the US to reduce a threatened tariff on its exports from 36% to a level in line with regional neighbors after presenting a "very substantial improvement' in a fresh round of talks, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said. Thailand was able to meet all US demands with its third proposal, scrapping tariffs and non-tariff barriers on more American goods, Pichai told reporters in Bangkok on Friday. Thai and US officials discussed tariffs, transshipments, imports of US goods and Thai investments in the US over a conference call on Thursday, he said. "We hit the target in the best way we could, not to the point of making offers against our will,' said Pichai, who leads Thailand's negotiation team. "As we're in this region, we predict that we'll be getting similar rates. That means not more than 20%.' President Donald Trump may be informed as soon as Friday about the progress of the Thai and US talks, Pichai said. Trump has announced deals for 20% tariffs on Vietnamese goods and 19% for Indonesia. Pichai added, however, that the US may impose different tariff rates on different tiers of Thai products. Bangkok sweetened its trade proposal to the US after Trump announced last week that the 36% tariff level would start Aug. 1. A failure to lower tariff rates imposed by its largest export market, which accounted for about 18% of Thailand's total shipments last year, could shave as much as one percentage point off the country's projected growth. After two rounds of ministerial-level talks, Thailand has offered to significantly increase purchases of US goods for which there is domestic demand - including agricultural products, liquefied natural gas and Boeing Co. aircraft - to reduce a trade surplus which stood at $46 billion last year. Thailand has also pledged to invest more in the US, including in the Trump-backed Alaska gas project. The latest proposal widens a list of products that will be subject to zero tariffs to 90% of all items, up from over 60% previously, according to a trade group that advises Pichai. The new offers could potentially help cut the trade surplus by 70% within three years and lead to balanced trade within five years, it said. "Thailand doing this and opening its market means that the country will have to become more proactive,' Pichai said. "We won't just be importing products to cut the trade surplus, but the size of our economy must also become bigger. We must sell more goods to more places in the world too.' Pichai said the Thai government will monitor the impact of more US goods on the country's own agricultural, industrial and supply chain sectors, as well as on small and medium enterprises. He said authorities will urgently address any fallout and help rebuild their competitiveness. Thai growth is already under pressure from Southeast Asia's highest household debt and sluggish domestic consumption. A favorable deal would also help ease investor concerns over political turmoil. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was recently suspended by a court over alleged misconduct in handling a border dispute with Cambodia. Thailand's exports rose about 15% in the first five months of the year, driven largely by front-loading during the 90-day pause to allow tariff talks. -- ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.

Youths must be bold, financially grounded and mentally resilient to thrive in digital economy, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently shaping the Malaysian economy and youths must be bold and able to utilise all resources to thrive, said MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. Dr Wee said Malaysia is now living in an era shaped by AI and this demands not just tech-savviness, but vision, responsibility and Malaysian values. 'With AI expected to contribute over US$100bil to our economy by 2030, the time to lead is now. 'I encourage the younger generation to not just be technologically capable, but also entrepreneurially bold, financially grounded and mentally resilient to thrive in the digital economy. 'The youths are not the leaders of tomorrow, they are the builders of today,' said Dr Wee in a Facebook posting on Friday (July 18). The Ayer Hitam MP said he had a valuable session with students at the Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR-UMT) Youth Economic Forum discussing how AI will shape Malaysia's economy in the future. Dr Wee said youths must utilise the tools available, create solutions to face the challenges before them, and always take care of their well-being to succeed in life. 'I believe the future of Malaysia is in good hands with youngsters who are able to stay focused, make good decisions and lead with clarity and purpose,' Dr Wee added.
