Vueling Launches New Direct Flight Between Essaouira and Barcelona
To celebrate the occasion, airport authorities hosted a ceremony attended by tourism officials, industry operators, and representatives of the Spanish airline, showcasing the growing international appeal of Essaouira as a travel destination.
Speaking to MAP, Abdelmounaim Aoutoul, director of Essaouira-Mogador International Airport, hailed the launch of the twice-weekly service as a milestone for the city's air connectivity. 'This new route is a significant addition to our flight offering, reflecting the airport's sustained growth over recent years,' he noted.
Passenger traffic at the airport increased by over 28% during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year, Aoutoul added. Essaouira is currently connected to about ten international destinations, mostly in Europe, alongside a domestic service to Rabat. He also revealed plans to expand connectivity further this summer, with new flights to Nantes in France and Seville in Spain expected to begin in the coming months.
Redouane Khane, president of the Provincial Tourism Council, said the direct link with Barcelona is set to inject fresh momentum into Essaouira's tourism sector.
'This new service makes it easier for visitors from Spain and other European markets connected through Barcelona to reach Essaouira directly,' he explained, highlighting the role of the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) and other partners in supporting efforts to strengthen the city's visibility and accessibility abroad.
Passengers arriving on the inaugural flight expressed their satisfaction with how much time the convenient route saves, calling it a welcome alternative to longer and more complicated travel itineraries.
The launch of this route is part of a broader strategy to enhance access to Essaouira, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed city whose global reputation as a cultural and tourist hub continues to grow.
In 2024, Essaouira welcomed a record of over one million tourists, marking exceptional growth that transformed the city from a seasonal destination into a year-round attraction.

Morocco emerges as key Islamic finance hub, says IFSB Secretary General
Morocco has established itself as a regional financial hub thanks to its strategic position between Africa and Europe, and it represents a key lever for the development of Islamic finance, said Ghiath Shabsigh, Secretary General of the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB). «We are impressed by the progress made, both in terms of regulatory frameworks and the facilitation of dialogue around Sharia-related issues, particularly how these principles are translated into practical operational mechanisms», Shabsigh told MAP in an interview on the sidelines of the 23rd Islamic Financial Stability Forum, recently held in Rabat. He emphasized that financial education is also a fundamental pillar for the growth of participatory finance, noting that these efforts are part of a strategic plan led by Bank Al-Maghrib to support the sector's expansion and build a robust, trustworthy, and sustainable financial system. While Islamic finance is relatively new in Morocco, Shabsigh observed that it is developing rapidly, as evidenced by key indicators—thanks in large part to the introduction of an adapted legal and regulatory framework. «This framework covers the banking, insurance, and capital markets sectors, marking a major step in supporting the growth of Islamic finance in the Kingdom», he explained, adding that such supervision ensures the safe, sound, and structured development of the sector. He also affirmed that, within this dynamic, Morocco has significant potential to strengthen its role in the Islamic finance industry, both regionally and internationally. «Morocco's initiatives to develop its capital markets are particularly noteworthy, especially the introduction of sovereign sukuk», he said. In this regard, he recommended building a strong foundation by establishing a dynamic and well-structured domestic sukuk market in dirhams. «Once this base is in place, issuing sukuk in foreign currencies becomes much more feasible, with better financing conditions and greater credibility among international investors», he concluded. Founded in 2003 and based in Kuala Lumpur, the IFSB is an international organization dedicated to promoting the soundness and stability of the Islamic financial services industry.

Renault Celebrates Production of Morocco's First Fully Electric Quadricycle
Rabat – The Renault factory in Tangier celebrated on Friday the production of the 2,000th Mobilize DUO, the first fully electric four-wheeled vehicle made in Morocco. The car is part of a newer category of small electric vehicles designed for city driving. A communication system developed by engineers in Morocco has been integrated into the vehicle, which is mainly intended for export to European markets. It was designed and assembled entirely by Moroccan talent, with engineering and production teams receiving over 8,000 hours of training in new skills related to electric mobility. The launch event saw the participation of Morocco's Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, CEO of Mobilize Gianluca De Ficchy, and General Manager of Renault Group Morocco Mohamed Bachiri. Also present at the event was the President of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region Omar Moro, Tangier Med CEO Mehdi Tazi Riffi, and other local officials and business leaders. The Mobilize DUO, fully electric and designed for city transport, is being built at a new assembly line inside the Tangier factory, which can produce up to 17,000 units per year. The line was specifically designed for fully electric vehicles and uses more advanced technology to meet these requirements. This project also allowed for the inclusion of a new group of Moroccan suppliers that specialize in electric vehicle components, helping them grow and boosting the local auto industry. Speaking at the ceremony, Mezzour said the factory, 'a leader in carbon neutrality and operational excellence, shows our shared commitment to developing Morocco's ability to innovate and adapt.' 'We are proud to witness the production of the 2,000th Mobilize DUO, the first 100% electric car made at Renault Tangier,' the minister said. He also commended Renault's progress, especially its integration of new suppliers, saying it strengthens Morocco's role as a strategic hub for electric mobility. Gianluca De Ficchy, CEO of Mobilize, said that his company aims to remove the barriers to electric mobility by offering financing, charging, and transport solutions that are accessible to all. 'The DUO is a result of our efforts to create urban transport that is safer, smarter, and more sustainable,' he added. Meanwhile, Renault Morocco's head, Mohamed Bachiri, said that the DUO project reflects the group's ongoing trust in the Moroccan industrial platform. The project is part of the broader momentum behind the Made in Morocco label, he stressed.
