Calderon sacked after Bristol Rovers' relegation

Yahoo04-05-2025
Bristol Rovers have sacked head coach Inigo Calderon following the team's relegation from League One.
Burton's draw with Wigan on Tuesday confirmed Rovers' return to League Two following two seasons in the third tier.
His final game in charge was a 4-1 defeat by Blackpool on Saturday, a ninth loss in 10 matches to end the campaign.
First-team coach Miguel Llera has also left The Memorial Stadium.
Calderon was appointed on Boxing Day but Rovers only won six of his 26 games in charge and they finished 22nd in the table.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion defender was appointed on a two-and-a-half-year deal in December, with the club 19th in the table and three points above the drop zone, but he failed to steer them to safety.
The Bristol Rovers job was Calderon's first in a first-team managerial role, with the 43-year-old previously being manager of Brighton's under-18s team.
In early March, back-to-back wins against Huddersfield and Bolton saw Rovers move nine points clear of the relegation zone, but a torrid run of eight defeats in nine games followed to drop them into the bottom four.
Calderon took over from Matt Taylor, who was sacked in early December after a year in the job.
However, the issues that Taylor's team struggled with at the start of the campaign persisted under Calderon, particularly scoring goals and away form.
Rovers' tally of 44 goals scored is the fourth-lowest in the division - with 25 scored during Calderon's tenure - and the manager's plight was not helped by the loss of strikers Chris Martin and Promise Omochere to season-ending injuries in early March.
The club also sit bottom of the table for away results, having won only three times on the road. Under Calderon there was only one away win in 12 matches, with just four goals scored.
Calderon had consistently been honest in his assessment of the side and last month said the team were playing like "a League Two side".
"It's been difficult. We knew it was my first chance in senior management and the fact I am not getting success has been frustrating for me," Calderon said following their defeat by Reading.
"But at the same time I sleep well in terms of I think I am trying to do everything possible - you cannot imagine the hours I try to put in to make this team stay in this division. It still hasn't been enough so maybe I have to do better, 100% I have to do better."
Ed Hadwin, BBC Radio Bristol commentator
Inigo Calderon's short tenure as Rovers' head coach has been a difficult one for him. He was so excited to get the chance of his first senior job in football management he spent Christmas away from his family in Spain to prepare.
And while there were definitely some games where he - and the team - showed some real promise (back-to-back wins over Huddersfield and Bolton in a run of five home wins in eight games) their awful finish to the season sealed his fate.
He certainly made mistakes during that time, with some of his substitutions leaving fans scratching their heads. But potentially the biggest issues he's faced weren't of his making.
Rovers' owner, Hussain AlSaeed, told us this season's playing budget is the largest in the club's history, and while plenty of the players recruited in the summer are undoubtedly talented, the blend of a lot of youngsters and a handful of very senior players wasn't right.
Then in January, with all his senior strikers having had significant injury issues, they didn't sign an experienced player as cover.
And with just five goals scored in their past 10 games, that decision probably cost Calderon his job and Rovers their place in League One.

Ofoborh finds new club as he signs for League Two rivals

Former Swindon Town midfielder Nnamdi Ofoborh has joined their League Two rivals Barnet on the eve of their season beginning. Ofoborh spent a little over a season with Swindon, initially signing in March 2024 and playing every game before the end of that campaign and then being a mainstay, especially under Ian Holloway, during 2024/25. The midfielder was one of five out-of-contract players to be offered a new deal back in May, but, along with goalkeeper Jack Bycroft, he waited too long to make a decision, and it was taken off the table. But after a summer in which he was hoping to secure a move to League One and spent time training with Cambridge United, he has become the second player who left Town last summer to secure a new team by joining Barnet. The Bees just won the National League under Dean Brennan, who was a managerial target for Swindon last summer before Mark Kennedy was appointed, and will be hoping to push on again, having made a number of exciting additions, including Romoney Crichlow and Dennis Adeniran. Ofoborh joins the North West London club one day before their season begins in the Carabao Cup preliminary round against Newport County at The Hive. He will also be back at the Nigel Eady County Ground very soon, as Swindon host Barnet on August 19. He told club media on his arrival: 'It has been a long summer and there has been a lot of talk about people going places, and I got the opportunity to speak with the gaffer [Brennan] and I liked what he was saying and the project. 'I knew a few of the boys already, so it was pretty much an easy decision for me.' He said: 'Some of the ones I wanted to keep did not stay. I gave them opportunities to stay, but they took too long for me, and then I said 'No'. 'I thought I made it clear, I think they are disappointed as they thought they had more time, but I know what I said, and I meant it. 'I am sorry for that, I wish them all the best, but I have had to move on. I want people who want to be here for real, not just because they couldn't find anything else that was slightly better."

Cambridge agree deal for midfielder McLoughlin

Cambridge have signed midfielder Shane McLoughlin on a one-year contract following his departure from Newport at the end of last season. The 28-year-old, who can also operate in defence, played 36 games in League Two last season but turned down the offer of a new deal at Rodney Parade. A former Republic of Ireland youth international, McLoughlin began his career at Ipswich before moving on to AFC Wimbledon, Morecambe and Salford City. He had been on trial with the U's during pre-season and becomes their eighth new arrival this summer. "I have been in the last week and got an idea of what the club is about, what the manager wants this season and what the lads are striving for," said McLoughlin. "It's a big club for this division and I am raring to get back into it now. I can't wait for Saturday and the season ahead." County hoping for strong start to new era at Barnet

Newport County AFC get their 2025-2026 campaign underway with a Carabao Cup preliminary round tie away at newly-promoted League Two rivals Barnet (kick-off 7.30pm, July 29). It's the beginning of a new era for County with manager David Hughes taking charge of his first competitive match after replacing Nelson Jardim in May. The former Aston Villa and Cardiff City defender, aged 47, is in his first managerial role since two brief spells as Barry Town boss in 2003 and 2004 but he has an impressive pedigree as a youth coach with Villa, Cardiff, Southampton and most recently Manchester United. Hughes will be aiming to improve on the Exiles' 22nd-place finish in the fourth tier last season and he has been busy in the transfer market over the summer. Goalkeepers Nik Tzanev and Jordan Wright, centre-back Lee Jenkins, Wales midfielder Matt Smith and striker Ged Garner have all arrived at Rodney Parade, while Manchester United defender Habeeb Ogunneye and Cardiff City striker Michael Reindorf have joined on loan. Academy product Moses Alexander-Walker has also impressed in pre-season, netting a late winner at Weston-super-Mare, and the 17-year-old could feature at Barnet. But, having seen the likes of Nick Townsend, Shane McLoughlin and Aaron Wildig depart since the end of last season, Hughes says he is still looking to make signings before Saturday's league opener at home to Notts County. "We are looking for one or two to come in and support [the squad], but they have to be right," said Hughes. "It's not a numbers game, we need guys who are going to come in and add something that we haven't got already. "We've tried to be logical in our approach through the summer and that's the right thing to do. We are looking but they have to add to what we have already got in the squad." County will be without Keenan Patten for the foreseeable future after the midfielder suffered a broken leg during last week's pre-season friendly against Bristol City. The 24-year-old former Wales Under-19 player underwent surgery last Wednesday on an open leg fracture. County said 'it is too early to provide a clear timeline for his recovery' but said Patten would be out 'for a lengthy period.' The injury occurred early in the second half following a collision at the Robins High Performance Centre, with the club thanking the paramedics and medical staff in attendance for their care. Hughes said: "Thankfully the injury wasn't as bad as we initially feared at that particular moment in time, but we'll be there to support him through his rehabilitation and we're already looking forward to seeing him back on the grass." County last met Barnet in December 2023 when they won 4-1 in an FA Cup second-round replay at The Hive Stadium. The north London outfit were National League champions last season. They have Newport-born goalkeeper Owen Evans and former County midfielders Anthony Hartigan and Emmanuel Osadebe in their ranks.
