SIU clears officer of non-lethal firearm shooting
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has determined that an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) did not commit a criminal offence when he shot a non-lethal firearm at a man in April.
The SIU report, Director Joseph Martino said he 'found no reasonable grounds' to believe the officer was out of line when he shot the 60-year-old man who had been setting houses on fire in Gravenhurst April 4.
The man was not injured.
OPP officers were dispatched to a residential area following calls to police from several homeowners reporting the man set fire to a number of residences.
The officer, having reason to believe the man had a knife, shot the man with an Anti-riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN) during his arrest.
Martino found the use of the ARWEN made sense when the man refused to peacefully surrender and began to close the distance with the officers.

Driver dead following single-vehicle crash on Highway 54 in Haldimand County
One person has died following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 54 in Haldimand County, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said. OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk said the crash happened just after midnight Tuesday between Onondaga Townline Road and Harrison Road and claimed the life of the driver. According to Sanchuk, Haldimand County OPP, Haldimand County Fire Department, and Haldimand County EMS responded to the crash. "I'm sad to say that the driver of the vehicle suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene," Sanchuk said. He said Haldimand Road 54 will be closed between Onondaga Townline Road and Harrison Road until around 12 p.m. because of the investigation.

Bodies of 2 men from Peel Region recovered after going missing in Stony Lake: OPP
The bodies of two men who went missing on Sunday in a body of water near Peterborough have been recovered, says the OPP. Police say two people were in the area of Stony Lake near Burleigh Falls on Sunday when one of them fell in from the shoreline and appeared to be in distress. 'Others entered the water to assist, resulting in two individuals being reported as missing,' the OPP's Peterborough County Detachment said in a news release. Police said they, along with local paramedics and fire services, were called to that area just before 5 p.m. on Sunday and subsequently launched a search of the water and surrounding area. The search continued on Monday, however searchers were unsuccessful in locating the two missing persons, the OPP said in a follow-up news release. Late Monday afternoon, the OPP said its Underwater Search and Recovery Unit helped with the recovery of the bodies of the two missing persons. The victims have only been identified by police as a 24-year-old man from Caledon and a 26-year-old man from Brampton.
