Asia shares track Wall St gains before payrolls test
By Wayne Cole SYDNEY (Reuters) -Asia shares firmed on Monday as seemingly unquenchable demand for technology companies lifted S&P 500 futures to another all-time peak, while the dollar dipped on concerns U.S. jobs data will show enough weakness to justify larger rate cuts. Investors were also keeping a wary eye on the progress of a huge U.S. tax-cutting and spending bill slowly making its way through the Senate, with signs it may not make it by President Donald Trump's preferred July 4 deadline. The Congressional Budget Office estimated the bill would add $3.3 trillion to the nation's debt, testing foreign appetite for U.S. Treasuries. There was no doubting the demand for the U.S. tech sector and megacap growth stocks including Nvidia, Alphabet and Amazon. Nasdaq futures rose another 0.3%, while S&P 500 e-minis added 0.2%. The bullish sentiment spilled over into Japan's Nikkei which rose 1.0%, while South Korean stocks gained 0.5%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan firmed 0.1%. A holiday on Friday means U.S. payrolls are a day early, with analysts forecasting a rise of 110,000 in June with the jobless rate ticking up to 4.3%. The resilience of the labour market is a major reason the majority of Federal Reserve members say they can afford to wait on cutting rates until they can gauge the true impact of tariffs on inflation, so a weak report would stoke speculation of a rate cut in July rather than September. "While initial jobless claims retreated somewhat from their recent high, continuing claims jumped higher yet again," noted Michael Feroli, head of U.S. economics at JPMorgan. "Consumers' assessment of labor market conditions also deteriorated in the latest confidence report." "Both of these developments suggest that the unemployment rate in June should tick up to 4.3%, with a significant risk of reaching 4.4%." The latter outcome would likely see futures push up the chance of a July easing from the current 18% and price in more than the present 63 basis points of cuts for this year. DOLLAR DOLDRUMS Fed Chair Jerome Powell will have an opportunity to repeat his cautious outlook when he joins several other central bank chiefs at the European Central Bank forum in Sintra on Tuesday. The prospect of an eventual policy easing has helped Treasuries weather worries about the U.S. budget deficit and the huge amount of borrowing it entails. Yields on 10-year Treasuries were steady at 3.27%, having fallen 9 basis points last week. The dollar has not fared so well, in part due to concerns tariffs and chaotic policies from the White House will drag on economic growth and erode the country's claim to exceptionalism. The euro was near its highest since September 2021 at $1.1731, having climbed 1.7% last week, while sterling stood near a similar peak at $1.3719. The dollar was down a fraction at 144.48 yen, after losing 1% last week, while the dollar index dipped to 97.163. James Reilly, a senior markets economist at Capital Economics, noted the dollar had fallen by more at this stage in the year than in any previous year since the U.S. moved to a free-floating exchange rate in 1973. "At this point, further weakness could become self-reinforcing as underhedged European/Asian portfolios chase the move," he added. "So, we suspect that this could be a pivotal period for the greenback – either it turns around here or there is another 5% or so fall around the corner." In commodity markets, the general revival in risk sentiment has undermined gold, which slipped to $3,266 an ounce and further away from April's record top of $3,500. [GOL/] Oil prices continued to struggle on concerns about plans for increased output from OPEC+, which contributed to a 12% slide last week. I'm certain all our recommended Mini LED TVs are about to get hefty discounts, but something better may be on the horizon

As one of the members of the team who tends to review Mini LED TVs, having done more than I care to count at the end of 2024 and start of 2025, I like to think I've got a pretty good read on the category. It's also why I'm frequently the member of the What Hi-Fi? home cinema team that keeps an eye on Mini LED TV prices, which in turn helps us offer accurate buying advice. So, when I tell you, with Prime Day 2025 my deals Spidey Sense has dialled up to 11 on some of the top options in our best Mini LED TVs guide, it hopefully means something. Specifically, I'm expecting Amazon, as well as specialist retailers, to offer huge discounts on two key sets. The first is the Award-winning, five-star TCL C805K, which is the top option we recommend to most people right now. This is because the set is great value at full price, but is coming to the end of its lifecycle with new sets from TCL hitting the market. We've already seen a wealth of hefty discounts on it over the past few months, and traditionally Prime Day brings 'best ever' prices to TCL's outgoing models. This was the case with the now retired TCL C845K last year, which was one of Prime Day 2024's best Mini LED bargains. If history repeats with the C805K, people looking for a fantastic big screen TV that won't break the bank. If that sounds appealing, I'd suggest keeping a particularly close eye on the 85-inch model, which we reviewed. The second, and in some ways bigger deal (see what I did there), is the Amazon Fire TV Omni Mini LED. Sure, it isn't perfect, hence the four-star rating. But when I tested it against similarly priced rivals, it proved to be the grown up in the room thanks to its focus on authenticity and consistency. This lets it offer a much more true to life, distraction free, experience than rivals, including the Hisense U7N, which is the main other Mini LED this price I recommend to most people. The main reason I think this one will be the bigger deal is that, as an event hosted by Amazon, Fire devices tend to get the biggest discounts during Prime Day. This has always been the case since I started covering the event. Last year the regular Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED, which was the firm's flagship at the time, was nearly half price during the event. If anything close to that happens to the Fire TV Omni Mini LED, it could be the affordable TV deal of the year, so far. My only word of caution on pulling the trigger now is that we're about to test a fresh batch of Mini LED TVs, so our advice may change in the not too distant future. If you walked past our review rooms this very second you'd spot key sets forming an orderly line, including the TCL Q6C, Panasonic W95B and Samsung QN90F. These are three key sets that left a very positive impression when we saw them at their respective launch events. Donald Trump has planned to end all trade discussions with Canada, hitting back at Ottawa for its digital services tax on web giants. The U.S. president indicated on Friday he wants the tax removed before he resumes negotiations, amidst the two countries being locked in talks as Canada tries to get him to lift his tariffs on Canadian goods. "It's not going to work out well for Canada. They were foolish to do it," Trump said from the Oval Office on June 27 about the digital services tax, adding the U.S. has "such power over Canada." During the G7 earlier this month, Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed they'd reach some agreement on the trade dispute within 30 days, according to CBC News. "We're going to stop all negotiations with Canada right now until they straighten out their act," Trump added, explaining if Ottawa removes the tax, which went into law last year, he'll be satisfied. "They will," he said. "They do most of their business with us. When you have that circumstance, you treat people better." After months of navigating tariffs and subsequent price increases, many Canadians are still choosing to put their money behind homegrown and manufactured goods. In a recent Yahoo Canada poll, a whopping 95 per cent of 10,000 readers indicated they want to buy Canadian products whenever possible, while only four per cent said the issue didn't concern them. "I fully intend to buy Canadian and leave American products on the shelves. Most people I know, as well as my family members, are all insisting that they will continue to restrict their purchases to Canadian products even if Trump does not impose tariffs," a Yahoo Canada reader said earlier this year via e-mail. "The threat of the punitive tariffs is enough. I will never buy American." "One option to push back on our American bullies is when we can't find a Canadian alternative, to buy Mexican in solidarity with our true allies — especially when it comes to our groceries," said another. "Failing that, [we can] buy anything other than American, we have lots of choices." "I was always conscientious about Canadian products but now I'm going to be laser-focused on it especially at the grocery store," a Yahoo Canada reader said. Once importing companies pay tariffs, they will likely adjust their retail prices to recoup the funds, making Canadian products more expensive for Americans. In order to maintain sales, Canadian manufacturers could potentially lower their sale prices to entice American importers and offset the impact of the tariff that the American company will have to pay. Similarly, products imported from the U.S. into Canada will require Canadian importers to pay retaliatory tariffs, which could push companies to raise their prices on imported goods. Essentially, tariffs mean that both Canadians and Americans would be paying more on imported products, which could influence consumers' buying decisions or impact importing and exporting. By shopping Canadian products and brands, consumers in Canada are exempt from tariffs, which means potentially saving money. Plus, there's the added benefit of supporting Canadian manufacturers who may be impacted by the U.S. import tariffs. Some grocery stores have opted to label Canadian made products with a Canadian flag next to its price tag to help conscious shoppers. Here are some other ways to tell if a product is made in Canada: Look for a 'Product of Canada' label This label means that approximately 98 per cent of ingredients, processing and labour used to produce the product areCanadian. According to the Government of Canada, products that claim to be "Canadian" are considered the same as "Product of Canada."Check for 'Made in Canada' labels When products are labelled as "Made in Canada," it means that a majority of the product's last substantial transformation occurred in Canada. A substantial transformation of a product would include combining ingredients to create a new product. For example, ingredients like eggs, sugar and butter undergo a substantial transformation to produce cookies. A product can also have a "Made in Canada" label if a majority (at least 51 per cent) of the costs incurred in manufacturing or producing the goods were incurred in Canada even if some ingredients are from other countries. Some packages may include qualifiers to ensure that the consumer knows some ingredients were imported from other countries.
