Yrsa Christoffersen was supposed to be enjoying a holiday with her grandchild.
Instead, the 73-year-old was undergoing an autopsy after Andrew Julian Stewart-Smith crashed into her car at high speed with a stolen vehicle before fleeing.
The devastating aftermath was laid bare before Stewart-Smith, 29, was sentenced in Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday for his 'reprehensible' behaviour.
Heartbreaking victim impact statements in a court packed with family members detailed the fallout after Stewart-Smith ploughed into the grandmother's car in September 2023.
Yrsa Christoffersen was driving her daughter Maria to work when a Holden Commodore collided with her Suzuki Swift about 6.40am.
She died in the crash and her daughter suffered serious injuries.
'I woke up in a hospital bed, feeling pain like I had never known,' Maria Christoffersen said in her victim impact statement.
'I remember asking where my mum was and they wouldn't tell me.

Dramatic vision and wild details emerge from Bruce Highway shooter chase

Vision has been released of a dramatic chase along a major highway after two men allegedly opened fire on a tradie's ute, hurled objects at traffic, and fled on foot before being mauled by a police dog. The footage shows the black Holden Commodore speeding through suburban streets and on major highways, weaving through traffic as PolAir tracked the vehicle from above. The police pursuit began after reports of gunfire on the Bruce Hwy near Murrumba Downs — just outside Brisbane — about 1.20pm on Wednesday. Queensland Police allege Adam James Rae Slade, 26, from South Brisbane, and Tyger Jack Titmarsh, 26, from Rockhampton, fired shots at a 31-year-old concreter's ute on the highway. 'They were tailgating me; they would have been centimetres from the rear tray of my ute,' the 31-year-old tradie told 7NEWS. 'I saw the barrel come out and then bang.' The Commodore allegedly sped off, sparking a dramatic hour-long pursuit through multiple suburbs before its tyres were spiked at Mount Samson. The chase stretched 40km before the car was dumped on Watson Rd at Armstrong Creek, where the two men fled on foot before police dog Stryker tracked them down, police said. Both were bitten during the arrest. Slade remains in the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital under police guard, where he is recovering from his injuries. The gun has not been found despite a thorough search of the Commodore, police said. Slade is facing seven charges, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation, drug possession, and endangering the safe use of a road after allegedly hurling a tyre and a fire extinguisher into traffic. Titmarsh also faces seven charges, among them driving while suspended, dangerous operation while intoxicated, failing to stop, and the same allegation of throwing a tyre and fire extinguisher onto the highway. Neither man appeared before Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Wednesday. Titmarsh's case was adjourned to September 18 with no appearance required. Slade will face court once released from hospital. Qatar Airways: Australian women granted right to sue airline for invasive searches at Hamad Airport

Five Australian women who were subjected to invasive internal examinations at Doha's Hamad International Airport after being forcibly removed from a Qatar Airways flight have secured the right to pursue legal action against the airline following an important Federal Court appeal victory. The women experienced the ordeal in October 2020, when airport police ordered dozens of female passengers off the aircraft for internal checks after a newborn baby was found abandoned in a bin at the airport. Shocked and distressed by the experience and the lack of an apology from Qatar Airways, the women are taking legal action against the airline, the airport operator MATAR, and Qatar's Civil Aviation Authority. In April 2024, Justice John Halley ruled the women's claim could not proceed under the Montreal Convention, reasoning that the invasive examinations did not occur during embarking or disembarking the plane. The women, represented by Marque Lawyers, appealed, arguing the searches took place as part of the disembarking process and that airline staff were aware. On Thursday, the Federal Court overturned the initial dismissal, with Justice Angus Stewart stating, 'There is no sufficiently high degree of certainty that what happened to the (women) in the ambulance could not ultimately be found to have been in 'the course of any operations of embarking or disembarking'... That issue can only be decided at trial and not on a summary basis.' The court also ruled that the women could pursue claims against MATAR for the conduct of those who performed the examinations. Justice Stewart noted, 'It cannot be concluded with sufficient confidence at this stage that the appellants (women) have or will have no basis to plead that the 'nurse' was an employee or a true agent of MATAR. It is also an error to conclude that MATAR's duty of care cannot possibly extend to the circumstances in and around the ambulance.' The appeal against Qatar's Civil Aviation Authority, however, was dismissed. The court ordered Qatar Airways and MATAR to pay the appeal costs, and the case will now return to the Federal Court for trial. 'The Full Court has set aside the orders of the primary judge summarily dismissing the claims against Qatar Airways and giving strike out relief in favour of MATAR. It has also granted liberty to the (women) to apply to file amended pleadings and ordered Qatar Airways and MATAR to pay the costs of the appeal. As regards QCAA, the Full Court has dismissed the appeal with costs,' Justice Stewart concluded. Marque Lawyers partner Damian Sturzaker said, 'Our clients endured a traumatic experience on that night in Doha and they deserve to have their day in court and compensation for their suffering.' 'They have shown enormous courage in standing up for what they believe is right and we will continue to support them as the case continues to the Federal Court,' he added. In 2023, Transport Minister Catherine King blocked Qatar Airways' application for increased flights into Australia, partly citing this case. The airline denies any wrongdoing, maintaining it cannot be held responsible for actions taken by airport police. If you or someone you know needs help, contact 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732). Daughter speaks out after teenage boy pleads guilty to Vyleen White murder in Queensland

The daughter of a woman who was stabbed to death has spoken out as the family wait to see if the teen responsible will be sentenced under Queensland 's new Adult Crime Adult Time laws. Vyleen White, 70, was killed by a 16-year-old boy outside Redbank Plains Town Square shopping centre, west of Brisbane, in February 2024. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Teen pleads guilty to murder. The teen, who is turning 18 later this year, was charged with murder and unlawful use of a motor vehicle plus three counts of stealing. On Tuesday he pleaded guilty to all the charges in Brisbane Supreme Court. Queensland's Liberal National government introduced new Adult Crime Adult Time laws after winning the 2024 election. Under the new laws, juveniles can face adult sentences for more than 30 offences including attempted murder, rape, attempted rape, torture and aggravated attempted robbery. However, the law does not apply in this case because it only came into effect in December 2024 and does not apply retrospectively. The teenager faces a maximum of 10 years behind bars unless the court finds the offence to be particularly heinous. White's daughter, Cindy Micallef, said she hoped the judge would determine the crime to be serious enough to fall under the new law. 'This is open to interpretation by the judge so, let's just hope he finds this situation particularly heinous, because I know the rest of Queensland does,' she told Sunrise. 'Our family certainly do.' Micallef and her family have been vocal about reforming the state's youth crime system in the wake of their matriarch's death. She said a lot of young repeat offenders remain in the community and are continuing to 'raise hell'. 'You could be at the shops and there will be a group of them giving someone a hiding and they just keep doing this sort of stuff,' Micallef said. 'They get put away for a couple of weeks but then they're back out again.' Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said Micallef was inspiring and the new laws were driven by her family's tragedy. He said he would continue to strengthen youth justice laws and make changes as required. 'I spoke to (Micallef) last night, I spoke to her dad Victor this morning, they're two of the greatest Queenslanders you'll ever meet,' he told Sunrise. 'We're investing in early intervention for the first time in a long time and rehabilitation to try to turn kids around. 'Our mission is to make sure that we turn around that next cohort and make sure there are consequences for those who do continue to those kinds of crimes.' White's family members who were in court did not audibly react to the guilty pleas on Tuesday. 'Every aspect of our lives has changed, every aspect, and it's something you can't possibly imagine,' White's daughter Julie said. Prosecutor Chris Cook sought a pre-sentence report by November 3 and a November 12 sentencing. The teenager will remain in custody until his next court appearances.
