Faustus faces an almighty battle no one can win

The clock is ticking for the good doctor of Christopher Marlowe's tragedy of self-destruction, brought to life for this year's Bard in the Botanics season, tellingly titled Magic – mayhem – and murder. Jennifer Dick's three-actor version was first performed in the Kibble Palace back in 2016. Her revisitation is as much a trip into the perils of fantasy wish fulfilment as it was before in an even tauter eighty minutes that sees Faustus throw himself into a tug of love between the two extremes that seem to offer him a lifeline.
Having reached the pinnacle of his profession only to lose his mojo, Faustus's desires go way beyond the appliance of science. As if by magic, Mephistopheles appears to make him an offer he can't refuse. Only the Good Angel hanging on his shoulder is standing in his way.

As in Dick's original production, Faustus is embodied by a returning Adam Donaldson as a frustrated academic who conjures up what initially appears to be the answer to all he ever wanted. Of course, as Sam Stopford's devil in disguise works his alchemy, things don't quite turn out as Faustus might have expected, even with Rebecca Robin's beatific Good Angel acting as good cop to Mephistopheles' sly old trickster.
Clad here in surgeon's scrubs, Donaldson's Faustus paces Heather Grace Currie's set of books, boxes and a very telling toy theatre with desperate intent. While Faustus's adventures are a matter of life and death, for Mephistopheles it's all a game. However serious Stopford's pasty-faced conjurer plays it, the result is an almighty battle between good and evil that nobody can win.

Scaffolding, warning signs and high fencing dominate Heather Grace Currie's design, and on the fencing, the pinned flowers, notes and toys people place, these days, at any spot where a tragic death has taken place. Adam Donaldson as Sherlock Holmes and Rebecca Robyne as Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes, A Scandal in Bohemia PIC: Tommy Ga-Ken Wan In this version, Star Penders's subdued Benvolio enters first, in his signature leather jacket, mooching along the fencing, reading the messages, including one – read out almost under his breath – that reflects the first lines of the play's famous prologue, with its reference to 'star-cross'd lovers'. And there, in those first few seconds, are all the strengths and weaknesses of Barr's version in a nutshell; a little short on the lush lyrical beauty and grave political context of Shakespeare's tragedy, but – in his own small-cast version, designed to focus on the young characters – full of a youthful energy and immediacy that's always thrilling, and sometimes almost shocking. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad So the story unfolds, with Montague boys Mercutio and Benvolio – and Romeo, when not distracted by love – roaming the hot summer streets in search of a rumble with the Capulets, represented by Benjamin Keachie's nervy Tybalt. Bailey Newsome delivers a memorable turn as a brilliantly poetic Glasgow Mercutio, Sam Stopford's Romeo is quietly intense; and when the three gatecrash the Capulets' summer ball, Romeo's romantic yearnings pivot instantly towards the host's daughter Juliet, played by Lola Aluko with a lusty, forthright energy that sometimes rushes past the early beauty of her romance with Romeo, but works brilliantly in the comic sequences with the nurse (also an excellent Star Penders), and in the ferocity of her confrontation with her father, Newsome again. After Mercutio's sudden death, in the most poignantly well-observed knife crime incident in all literature, Barr's tightly cut version shudders towards tragedy at speed, with mischance after mischance haunting Keachie's intense Friar Laurence in his efforts to save the young couple. Even 430 years on from its first performance, the tragedy seems so tantalising, and so unnecessary, that it requires a slightly longer and weightier coda than this version gives it; perhaps a return of the Duke – strongly represented throughout by Stopford with a megaphone – to speak his own final lines, rather than leaving them to a grief-hushed Benvolio. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Yet the fresh, driving energy of this Romeo & Juliet never fails, until the two lovers breathe their last; and as a portrait of a younger generation failed by the stubborn hate-mongering of their elders, Shakespeare's much-loved old tragedy often seems more timely than ever, in this summer of 2025. PIC: Tommy Ga-Ken Wan Over in the Kibble Palace, meanwhile, Bard associate director Jennifer Dick offers a brisk and fascinating 85-minute take on the Sherlock Holmes myth. Dick's play revolves around Holmes's relationship with the brilliant adventuress Irene Adler, and uses short versions of three Conan Doyle stories to explore a feminist narrative in which Adler repeatedly matches or outfoxes the great detective, who – unusually – is far from indifferent to her charms, and who lacks her edge of steel when it comes to destroying men who have mistreated women. In Dick's production – perfectly placed, for date and atmosphere, in the high-Victorian Kibble Palace – Adam Donaldson plays an unusually bewildered Holmes, not quite brilliant enough to get on the right side of feminist history, while Rebecca Robin dominates the stage as a gloriously smart and beautiful Adler, Stephen Arden narrates as a wryly reflective Watson and James Boal plays all three villains in fine style. The result is a hugely enjoyable fresh look at Sherlock, for our disruptive times; and one executed with skill and flair, to a gently brilliant musical score and soundscape assembled by Dick herself, for our delight.

South Africa's Handspring Puppet Theatre will forveer be associated with the skeletal wooden puppets from War Horse, but there's a lot more to them than that: the company has been around for ages, and for the 2025 Edinburgh International Festival they bring back one they made 30 years ago. Faustus in Africa! is a spin on the classic Marlowe play that depicts the soul-selling Faustus as a man out on a reckless African safari. But what will the cost have been to the planet when his deal with the devil ends? Directed by William Kentridge, the story is refashioned into a critique of colonialism and the climate emergency.

Mark Brown: Sympathy for the devil at Bard In The Botanics

In the theatre, the great German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1790 version of the story stands as one of the totemic texts of dramatic literature. Predating all of the above, however, is Christopher Marlowe's famous Elizabethan tragedy Doctor Faustus. First staged in 1592, this play by one of Shakespeare's most eminent contemporaries was ripe for adaptation by Bard in the Botanics, the annual mini-festival of works by the man of Stratford and other classical writers. Marlowe's drama – in which Faustus is pulled back and forth between demonic temptation and heavenly redemption – is a work of compelling intensity. This version – which has been compressed by director Jennifer Dick to just 80 minutes – cuts to the thematic chase. Consequently, watching this adaptation is sometimes akin to viewing a tennis match, with the forces of Heaven (Rebecca Robin) and Hell (Sam Stopford) as the players and Faustus (Adam Donaldson) as the ball. Dick's reconstructed text reduces Marlowe's dramatis personae from 17 named characters to a mere three (plus additional figures, played by the cast). The piece survives its radical truncation thanks both to the richness of Marlowe's language and the vividness of certain scenes. The not-so-good doctor's metaphysical mockery of the Pope is a case in point. This scene – which, one assumes, only got past the late-16th-century censor thanks to the Elizabethan English state's hostility to Roman Catholicism – retains its capacity to shock more than 400 years on. The placing of Faustus in modern dress – complete with a stethoscope – neither enhances nor detracts from the drama; not least because the characters of The Good Angel and Mephistopheles are represented in costumes that seem somehow timeless in their broad evocation of Renaissance dress. READ MORE: Lewis Capaldi wins number one single after emotional Glastonbury comeback Donaldson's Faustus is almost naïve in the alacrity with which he parts with his eternal spirit. It is a facet of Dick's extensive abridging that the doctor appears easily swayed, from one moment to the next, by both the Angel and Mephisto. Robin, for her part, plays God's emissary with a convincing ethereality and an air of palpable forgiveness. It is, however, Stopford's performance as Mephistopheles that truly captivates. Dick is fortunate indeed that she has at her disposal the talents of an actor who is – in numerous regards – brilliantly suited to the role of Lucifer's sinisterly persuasive minion. Stopford is an actor blessed with more than his fair share of menace. His brilliantly balanced Mephisto also has an underlying anguish and, ultimately, an absolute ruthlessness that speak to his brutal separation from any sense of hope. This is, then, an unevenly adapted version of Marlowe's play, but one that is – typically of Bard in the Botanics – presented with admirable boldness and bravery. Until July 12:
