Hamilton Accies Women boss heaps praise on champions on trophy day

Robert Watson's side won the title with a game to spare
Hamilton Accies Women boss Robert Watson got his hands on the SWPL2 trophy and says his 'brilliant' team deserve all the credit they will receive, after winning the league with a bit to spare.
Accies received the silverware on Sunday after beating Rossvale 5-1 at New Douglas Park, ending their campaign four points clear of Kilmarnock in second, having scored 103 league goals and conceded just 28, and with 21 victories from their 28 games.

With final day doubles, Josi Giard was top league scorer on 26 [27 in total] and Sophie Townsley ended on 20, with Justine Strain also on the score-sheet.

Watson says his record-setting squad deserve all the plaudits.
He said: 'Sunday was really good, being able to finish off with a really good win and put a wee bit of a show on for the crowd that come in.
'When you lift a trophy, you want to make sure you win on the day, and it was good that Josi managed to finish top scorer in the league, Sophie was aiming for 20 league goals, which she did, and Justine got another goal.
'Between the game at the weekend there and when we won it through at Gartcairn, every single player got on the pitch, which was important as well, to make sure everyone was a part of it.
'Every player has delivered something at some point over the season, so it was a really good day.

'Scoring 103 league goals and 28 conceded means we have the best attack and defence, and there was only one game we didn't score in, which was the Scottish Cup last-16 up at Aberdeen.
'There are loads of records that the club have beaten, from a club point of view, and they deserve all the credit that they've got over the last week or so, because they've been brilliant since last August.'
Watson added: 'I knew we would make chances, it was just making sure that we were clinical enough, and we were in the first half, with Josi and Sophie getting two each.

'From there we were in total domination of the game and it was probably a fitting way to finish off, hitting those numbers of goals.
'The game went a wee bit flat in the second half, we were never in danger of losing the game.
'But I have to pay credit to the subs who came on in the second half, because we definitely took a lift in the last 25 or 30 minutes of the game, and probably should have scored another couple more than we did.

'But it's testament to how much everybody has contributed over the season.'
On next season's targets in the top flight, Watson said: 'The immediate thing is finding a way to stay up. We're going to have the smallest budget, we're going to be the smallest team in the division.

'I'm sure we'll keep a few players with experience, but we're going to need to look to bring more players in and probably improve the depth of our squad.
'I'm really optimistic. I think the experiences of last season are going to stand us in good stead, both for the players who played last season and will be involved next year, and just from us as a coaching staff.
'Having had a year to build and develop a bit more of a playing style has been really important as well.
'A lot of that work has already been done.
'Aside from all of that there will be excitement from everyone, because we're playing against the big teams again.'

Dorrington return 'a big boost' for Aberdeen, says Devlin

Alfie Dorrington's return is "a big boost" for Aberdeen, says fellow defender Nicky Tottenham centre-half has returned to Pittodrie for the 2025-26 campaign following a successful loan spell last term, which culminated in a historic Scottish Cup triumph."It's good to see him back again," Devlin told Aberdeen's club media."I thought he was brilliant last season for us, especially for someone coming into his first real exposure to first-team football. And he'll be a big boost for us."There are a few people who have left, big characters who have left the dressing room this year. "He's good on and off the park, he's a big character, he gets on well with everyone. And he brings a lot of quality to the team, which we'll need throughout the season."Jimmy Thelin's men continued their pre-season preparations with a friendly defeat to English Premier League side Fulham on signing Kusini Yengi gave Aberdeen the lead, but they fell to a 4-1 defeat against the London club, who finished 11th England's top tier last season."It was difficult, everyone knows they're a top side," said Devlin, who replaced Graeme Shinnie at left-back at half time."They give a lot of the top teams in England problems as well. There were good parts of it - first half and second half - but obviously lots of stuff we need to work on going into the start of our season."On playing in an unfamiliar left-back position, Devlin continued: "On paper it's the same position, it's just a different side. "I think the manager knows I'm happy to play wherever. If he thinks it's the best for the team, then he knows I'll play anywhere for him."

David Gray not too downhearted despite Bolton defeat

Hibs head coach David Gray admits his players could have been 'better' during yesterday's defeat to Bolton Wanderers at Easter Road. However he was pleased to see former teammate Darren McGregor honoured at his Testimonial Match, and remained buoyant despite the off-day against English League One opposition. Two second-half strikes sealed the win for the visitors as Hibs struggled to impact the game as much as Gray and his coaching staff would have liked. After the final whistle he said: 'It wasn't our best, most fluent performance by any means. We all know that. There's a lot of improvement to come. 'We've got a lot of hard work still to be done and we've got a really good game to look forward to on Thursday. 'I'm really happy with our pre-season, but today I think we can be miles better. We know the areas we can be better in. 'We'll be back in on Monday and we'll need to make sure we are bang at it to improve.' It was a competitive encounter between the two sides, with Steven Schumacher's side offering Hibs a tough, physical test in torrential conditions. According to Gray, the difficulty of the fixture was no different to other pre-season matches so far however, but instead just a different style to play against. 'When you look at all of our games in pre-season, they have all been difficult games. 'The standard of the opposition we have took on, that is all with European games in mind because of the variety in teams you can potentially face. 'Today was more of a domestic challenge we would face week in, week out in Scotland – which is high intensity and very aggressive. 'I'm not getting too downheartened by what I have seen. A lot of good work has been done and I'm happy with the fitness levels of the players.' Gray also touched on Darren McGregor's warm reception at Easter Road, with the current Hibernian Under-19s Head Coach and former Hibs centre-back's service to the Club celebrated with a Testimonial Match. The two defenders both won the 2016 Scottish Cup together, with Gray only having great things to say about his former teammate. 'It's a special day for Darren and his family. I wish we had a better result for him but, on the whole, for what he has done for this Club, it was a fitting testimonial and I'm delighted to be part of that for him. 'As I've said, it is a special day for a special person who has given a lot to this Club. It's his childhood club, the team he grew up supporting and he has spoken very honestly about what this Club means to him. 'He deserves all the praise and accolades he's had over his time at Hibs, because he has certainly left nothing out there for them.' Like this: Like Related

Darren McGregor grateful to still be at Hibs

Darren McGregor is 'grateful' to still be at Hibs, 10-years after joining his boyhood heroes. The former Hibs defender, and current Under-19s Head Coach, reached 10 years with the Club this summer and was granted a testimonial for his excellent service to the Club. He watched on at Easter Road Stadium with his family and friends as Hibs went down 2-0 in a competitive encounter to Bolton Wanderers. 'I am really, really grateful,' he told HibsTV. 'I came here as a fan at the age of 29 and I've been lucky enough to stay here for 10 years. 'I've been a player, a mentor and a coach. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to be at a club I've been a supporter of since I was a kid. 'And I'm grateful to still be here trying to influence the next generation and try and get as many younger lads into the First Team as possible.' Daz, who was initially intending to play in match, was able to walk out with the match ball alongside his family, as well as speak on the pitch at half-time alongside a number of fellow Hibs heroes. On a special day for the 2016 Scottish Cup winner, McGregor insisted all that mattered was his family enjoying the occasion and making memories for the years ahead. 'My kids can't quite remember me playing, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing! 'But for them to see the pitch today, to have the strip with my name written on the front of it which is a wee memento for them. 'In years to come, they can always look back and say, 'My Dad got a testimonial at the Hibees'. That is the most important thing for me.' Plenty has changed at the Club since Daz's time as a player at Easter Road, but these changes are all for the better according to the man himself. 'The Club has came on leaps and bounds. You only need to look at the infrastructure. 'You look at the pitch, the stadium, the fan experience, the training ground – which massive investment is being put into, which is largely down to the Gordon family, who have been unbelievably kind and generous to Hibs – so hopefully we can get success, because ultimately that is what you want. 'You want to play European football, win cups and finish as high in the league as you can. I think with this squad, having seen it, there is two players for every position. 'We are definitely in a good place.' Like this: Like Related
