Pupils at school in Basildon complete 3K run as part of 'successful' programme
Northlands Primary School children marked the end of the "Backside to Trackside Juniors" initiative by proudly finishing the race.
The effort was made possible by funding from the Pitsea Area Committee, which provided the young runners with starter kits and trainers whilst helping them build confidence, get active, and set goals.
Director and head coach of the scheme, Andy Stead, said: "The pilot Backside to Trackside Junior programme has been a huge success.
"The children have all put in massive effort and achieved so much, I'm super proud of them."

Basildon councillors Jack Ferguson and Pat Reid attended the event to support the young athletes.
Grant Taylor, assistant director of community and leisure at Basildon Council, said: "The funding provided by the Pitsea Area Committee has made a positive impact.
"It's inspiring to see what they can achieve when given the opportunity and encouragement."
Plans are in place to extend the initiative to other Basildon schools.

Agyemang can inspire next generation of Lionesses, former coach says
Lioness Michelle Agyemang has sealed her place as an inspirational heroine for the next generation of girls who want to play football, the coach at her old local club has said. Youngsters from Agyemang's hometown gathered at a small community centre in South Ockendon, Essex, to cheer on the Lionesses to victory at the Euro 2025 final. The biggest applause was for the 19 year-old striker who just a few years ago was also playing at Brandon Groves FC. Agyemang was named The Young Player of the Tournament on Sunday as England triumphed on penalties against Spain after a 1-1 draw. On Sunday, Roy Enright, 45, who manages the girls' team of under 13-year-olds, said: 'We are proud of Michelle, obviously, but we are also proud of our our girls' team here who play and train every week. They are consistent. 'Michelle's success and the Lionesses' success will only help that and it will only drive our girls on even further over the next year. It will also bring more girls into football locally as well.' He said it was 'amazing' to see Agyemang scoop the Young Player award after scoring two goals, making six attempts and having a 77.5% passing accuracy rating in the competition. Paula Howes, vice chair of Brandon Grove FC, said: 'I think she (Agyemang) has got that determination and that drive on the pitch, and the girls can connect with that. 'It is also knowing that she is a local girl as well, I think that helps give them the motivation and drive, to know that you can start at grassroots football and progress up to the higher level, if you work at it.' Agyemang, who had one England cap before the tournament, has been a rising star in this competition, and twice became the team's saviour with equalisers in their quarter-final and semi-final comebacks. The 19-year-old came off the bench to score crucial equalisers against Sweden in the quarter-final and Italy in the last four. She also came on as a substitute in the final as England eventually saw off Spain on penalties to retain the trophy. Agyemang was picked as young player of the tournament by the Uefa Technical Observer Group who for her outstanding impact, both individually and for England. They said: 'Michelle made a great contribution to help England reach the final. 'She came on and both times got the goals that England needed to get through.' Lena Kowalska, 12, who plays midfield for the local team, said she was really impressed and inspired by Agyemang. She said: 'It is the fact that at her age, she can already be playing in the Euros and with the top women, it just makes me feel that we could do it one day if we are hard working as well.'

Charlton Athletic sign QPR striker Kelman
Charlton Athletic have made last season's League One Golden Boot winner Charlie Kelman their eighth signing of the summer. The newly-promoted Championship side have paid Queens Park Rangers an undisclosed fee for the 23-year-old Basildon-born player, who topped the League One goalscoring charts while on loan at Leyton Orient last season. Kelman played in all 46 league games for Orient, scoring 21 goals as they reached the play-offs, before losing to the Addicks in the final at Wembley. Kelman began his career at Southend United but moved to Loftus Road in 2020. He played 23 games in the following five seasons, without scoring, before heading out on loan to Gillingham and Wigan, with the latter sandwiched between two spells at Orient. He scored more goals last season than he had in the previous 11 campaigns combined. Kelman qualifies for the USA after spending some of his childhood in Texas, and has represented the country at under-18 and under-20 level. Charlton manager Nathan Jones told the club website: "He's a player we earmarked a long time ago as someone we really wanted to sign. "With our promotion, it was something we went after really hard. He's a goalscorer - which he proved last year. "He's scored 27 goals, played lots of games and he's a great age. He's everything we want at Charlton and adds to an already really strong strikeforce that we have." White Ensign beaten in eventful season opener
IT was an entertaining start to the Essex Senior League campaign, with seven goals and three red cards at Burroughs Park, as White Ensign lost 5-2 to SOUL Tower Hamlets. The 2025/26 season got off to the worst possible start for Ensign who found themselves 4-0 down inside 33 minutes. Although Riley Weir did pull one back for the hosts just before half time, Tower Hamlets restored their four-goal cushion six minutes after the restart through Samir Bihmoutine. On 73 minutes, following a clumsy challenge from Joseph Atoki, both he and two Tower Hamlets players were sent off – including goalkeeper Sidi Haidara. Ensign failed to make the man advantage count, only managing a single consolation goal deep into injury time thanks to Mechack Asuka. It took the visitors just 63 seconds to break the deadlock and it came courtesy of an Ensign mistake. Tolu Ajayi's fluffed clearance gifted the ball straight to Sherman Artmeladze, who lobbed the ball over Ensign 'keeper Jordan Williams to give the visitors an early lead. Tower Hamlets were only promoted to the Essex Senior League last season, but made light work of Ensign and soon added to their lead with two goals in quick succession. Rian Patel did well up against Ajayi on the right-hand side before finding Steve Carvell in space in the box. His shot was parried by Williams, but only as far as Kieran James who side footed home the rebound from close range. The away side kept up the pressure, with Artmeladze seeing a shot from distance turned behind by Williams, and they soon added a third to their tally. Carvell got his name on the scoresheet, thumping an unstoppable strike past Williams and into the top corner from 20 yards. Things then got even better for Terry Spillane and John Field's team, making it 4-0 just past the half hour mark. James slipped a clever pass into Artmeladze who was able to break into the box and, despite losing his balance, wriggled away from both Ajayi and Albie Keith, before chipping the ball over Williams and into the top corner. Any hopes of a major Ensign comeback were increased somewhat just before the interval, with the hosts reducing the deficit to three goals. Rio Campbell dug out a cross and it was met by Weir who beat Haidara with a stooped diving header to make it 4-1 going into half time. However, six minutes into the second period, Tower Hamlets restored their four-goal cushion. Louie Maxwell thumped the ball forward and over the Ensign backline, Bihmoutine raced onto it, beat Williams to the ball and poked it past the Ensign 'keeper and into the back of the net. The game fizzled out somewhat after this, however with 20 minutes left to play it sparked back into life. Haidara claimed an Ensign corner and looked to start a Tower Hamlets counterattack. However, when he went to kick the ball he was caught by Atoki, resulting in Haidara wrestling Atoki to the ground and sparking a huge fight between both sets of players. When tempers did finally cool down somewhat, referee, Adeolu Adeyemi, brandished three red cards – dismissing both Atoki and Haidara as well as Tower Hamlets defender Keanu Hill who was also involved in the melee. This resulted in, not only a man advantage for Ensign, but also outfielder Taylor Gibson having to go in goal for Tower Hamlets. Aaron Bloxham's side couldn't make this count though. A glancing header from Asuka, seven minutes into injury time proved nothing more than a consolation as Ensign fell to a heavy defeat on opening night. Ensign are next in action on Wednesday night, when they entertain a Barking side who take on Basildon United this weekend.
