Blue Jays Announce Anthony Santander News Before Yankees Game

Blue Jays Announce Anthony Santander News Before Yankees Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Toronto Blue Jays (45-38) head into the Bronx to face the New York Yankees on Monday night looking to build on a solid run that has kept them firmly in the American League playoff picture. Toronto closed out its weekend set with the Boston Red Sox on a positive note, taking a 5-3 win at Fenway Park. Advertisement That result capped a stretch that has seen the Blue Jays win six of their last ten games, leaving them third in the AL East, just three games behind the Yankees. Toronto's impressive stint has come despite the absence of some of its key players, including outfielder Anthony Santander, who has been sidelined since May 30 due to inflammation in his left shoulder (and hip). Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Anthony SantanderDaniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images Ahead of Monday's game, general manager Ross Atkins revealed that Santander suffered a subluxation in his left shoulder, describing it as having 'popped in and out.' While Santander has not yet resumed swinging a bat, Atkins said he could begin swings soon and a return before the All-Star break has not been ruled out. Advertisement Santander, who signed a five-year, $92.5 million deal in January, has struggled this season, batting just .179 with six home runs over 50 games before being placed on the injured list on May 30. His shoulder issues, coupled with hip soreness, have limited his participation. Despite a platelet-rich plasma injection in early June and resumed throwing, he has not progressed to batting practice yet (via CBS). His absence has forced the Blue Jays to rely on other bats to generate offense. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Alejandro Kirk have all contributed in recent weeks to help keep the team afloat, while younger players like Addison Barger and Nathan Lukes have also stepped up to the occasion. Blue Jays OF Anthony Santander still not swinging because of partial shoulder dislocation

TORONTO (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Anthony Santander still hasn't been able to resume swinging a bat as he recovers from a partially dislocated left shoulder. General manager Ross Atkins said Monday that Santander had a left shoulder subluxation after crashing into the outfield wall in Anaheim in early May. Toronto put Santander on the injured list on May 30. Advertisement Santander signed a $92.5 million, five-year contract with the Blue Jays in January. The deal includes up to $61.75 million in deferred payments. Atkins said Santander could resume swinging soon and said it's still possible the slugger returns before the All-Star break Santander set career highs with 44 homers, 102 RBIs and 91 runs scored in 155 games for Baltimore last year but has struggled to duplicate those numbers this season. The veteran switch hitter is batting .179 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in 50 games. Shortstop Bo Bichette was scratched from the lineup for Monday's home game against the New York Yankees because of a sore right knee. Ernie Clement went from third base to shortstop and moved up from second in the order to the leadoff spot. Advertisement Addison Barger moved from right field to third base, George Springer went from DH to right, Will Wagner moved from second base to DH, and Davis Schneider went from left field to second. Jonatan Clase replaced Schneider in left field. ___ AP MLB: Ian Harrison, The Associated Press
