Hulkenberg rids himself of unwanted record at the 239th attempt
After 15 years, and at the 239th attempt, the Sauber driver finally shrugged off the unwanted record of the most race starts without ever standing on the podium – and replaced it with the most starts until a first podium.
"I don't think I can comprehend what we've just done," he said over the team radio after taking third place.
Hulkenberg did it in fairytale fashion, following a script that even the producers of the recently-released Brad Pitt blockbuster F1 movie would probably have rejected as too implausible.
He started last on the grid, in 19th place with Alpine's Franco Colapinto lining up in the pitlane, for Swiss-based Sauber.
Thanks to clever strategy and pitting at absolutely the right time, Hulkenberg took Sauber to their first podium in 13 years and also became the team's all-time lowest-starting top-three finisher.
"It feels good. It's been a long time coming, hasn't it?" said Hulkenberg, rather stating the obvious, after tumultuous pitlane celebrations.
"I always knew we have it in us, I had it in me somewhere... it's pretty surreal, to be honest. Not sure how it all happened, but obviously crazy conditions, mixed conditions. It was a survival fight for a lot of the race.
"I think we just were really on it. The right calls, the right tyres, at the right moment. Made no mistakes and, yeah, quite incredible."
With nine-times British GP winner Lewis Hamilton in fourth place for Ferrari, it had seemed inevitable that Hulkenberg would be reeled in and his day would end yet again as a story of what might have been.
Instead it became a tale of triumph against the odds for a future works Audi team on the up and now riding high in sixth place overall.
"I think I was in denial until probably the last pit stop, you know, and then when I heard we gapped Lewis quite a bit with the one extra lap, I was like, 'Okay, this is good, this is some breathing space'," said Hulkenberg.
"It was an intense race but like I said, we didn't crack. No mistakes. And obviously really, really happy with that."
Team boss Jonathan Wheatley, an F1 veteran who joined from Red Bull this season, piled on the superlatives.
"I think he was almost in a state of shock when I saw him under the podium," he said.
"Nico drove an outstanding race today. One of the best I've seen at Silverstone and one of the best I've seen of any driver ever.

High-speed fall forces Philipsen out of Tour de France
DUNKIRK, (France): The winner of the Tour de France's opening stage Jasper Philipsen was forced to pull out of the 21-day race on Monday after suffering a broken collarbone in a high-speed fall. Philipsen and the other fast men were contesting an intermediate sprint 60km from the Dunkirk finish-line of stage three when other riders swerved in front of him during a 70 km/h dash. He collided with Bryan Coquard and fell. The fall ripped the green best sprinter's jersey from Philipsen's back as he slid at speed along the road. "Displaced fracture of the right collarbone, surgery will definitely be required," Philipsen's team Alpecin said in a statement. "At least one broken rib, possibly two... We wish Jasper all the best and a speedy recovery." The Belgian's teammates initially stopped to help him, but were soon told by the Alpecin team to continue on their way as they realised the extent of the 27-year-old's injuries. Coquard apologised at the finish, but stewards gave him and Belgian Edward Theuns yellow cards for "irregular sprinting." Italian Davide Ballerini and Dutchman Danny van Poppel also received yellow cards for the same offence in the chaotic final sprint in Dunkirk. The four riders, who were also fined 500 Swiss francs (535 euros, $627), are the first to receive yellow cards in the Tour de France. Under the newly-introduced system they will be thrown off the race if they receive a second yellow. Philipsen won the 2023 green jersey as best sprinter on that edition of the Tour, and has 10 career victories in the race. He was among the favourites to win the points classification again this year, but his withdrawal leaves Italian Jonathan Milan in the green jersey. The third stage was eventually won by Belgium's Tim Merlier in a photo finish ahead of Milan. — AFP

Barca's Szczesny renews contract, leaving Ter Stegen's future in doubt
BARCELONA, (Spain): Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has renewed his contract until 2027, the La Liga champions said yesterday (July 7). "The Polish goalkeeper staying is recognition and a prize for his great season between the sticks for Barca, after an unexpected arrival in a strange context," wrote the Catalan club in a statement. Szczesny had retired from football when Barcelona signed him in October to replace injured stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was ruled out for most of the season with a ruptured patella tendon. The 35-year-old impressed as Barcelona won La Liga and the Copa del Rey, with Ter Stegen only returning to the squad in the final weeks of the season. Szczesny's decision to stay and Barca signing goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol earlier in the summer casts doubt over Ter Stegen's future at the club. The German international, 33, commands a high salary at Barcelona and Spanish media report the financially-struggling club would like to make savings in that regard. Barca signed Garcia from Espanyol for 26.34 million euros ($31 million) on a six-year deal in June, and also still have another goalkeeper in Inaki Pena on the books. — AFP
