The Security Service of Ukraine said that two people allegedly responsible for assassinating a key domestic intelligence official in a Kyiv parking lot were killed in a firefight last week.
Security Service Colonel Ivan Voronych was killed on July 10 by the pair — a man and a woman — hired by Russian special services, or FSB, Ukraine's SBU said Sunday on Telegram.

'Not worth the risk' - Heartbroken family's warning after Southend teen's Ibiza death

THE heartbroken family of an 18-year old who died after taking a suspected party drug in Ibiza has issued a desperate warning to other youngsters thinking of doing the same. Ryan Long, from Eastwood, died last Tuesday after spending five days in intensive care after falling ill while on holiday in Ibiza. "He's not the first and he won't be the last, but I hope that this will shock other young people his age," said Ryan's dad, Adrian Long. Ryan had flown out to Ibiza with a group of friends on Wednesday July 2, falling ill just a day later on Thursday July 3. According to his parents, Ryan's friends had helped their son out of the club they were in and into a taxi after his condition took a downward turn. Ryan was subsequently moved to an intensive care unit where he tragically passed away five days later with his parents at his side. "It's not worth the risk," said Ryan's distraught mum, Angela. "Ryan knew about the danger, he knew about Leah Betts and he knew that it only takes one pill. "We'd drummed it into him but we never thought it would be him." Latchingdon resident Leah Betts died in 1995, also aged 18, after taking an ecstasy tablet during a birthday celebration at her home - her case made national headlines. Discussing why she believes Ryan decided to take an illegal drug in Ibiza, Angela said: "The attraction for youngsters is too much - Ryan told us that it was 52 euros for a single vodka and coke." "However, they did tell us that there were a number of other cases already this season." In the wake of Ryan's death, a fundraiser has been set up by family friends in support of the Long's, and has already seen thousands donated to the grieving family. You can support the fundraiser at

Slain Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman, husband Mark and golden retriever to lie in state

Rep. Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark and their golden retriever Gilbert will lie in state at the Minnesota State Capitol on June 27 after they were killed in what officials have called a 'politically motivated assassination.' Hortman and her husband were shot and killed inside their home on June 14. After what has been described as the largest manhunt in Minnesota history, Vance Luther Boelter, 57, was arrested and charged in state and federal court in connection with the shooting. More: FBI: Suspected killer of Minnesota lawmaker is a doomsday 'prepper' Prosecutors say Boelter also went to the home of Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman disguised as a law enforcement officer and wounded Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. He then traveled to two other unnamed lawmakers' homes before entering the Hortmans' home and killing them, according to a federal affidavit. The affidavit says Boelter wanted to 'kill, injure, harass and intimidate'' more than 45 Minnesota state and federal officials and prosecutors say he also intended to target several other Midwestern lawmakers. Hortman will be the first woman and one of less than 20 Minnesotans to lie in state at the Capitol, according to a release from the state's House of Representatives. Members of the public will be able to pay their respects from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time. The tribute will come on the same day Boelter is expected to appear in federal court, where he faces half a dozen charges including multiple counts of murder and stalking. A private funeral for the Hortmans, which will be livestreamed, will follow on June 28, officials said. The couple had two children and lived in Brooklyn Park, a suburban city about 10 miles north of Minneapolis, according to Hortman's profile. Hoffman and Hortman are both members of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), a political party exclusive to the state. Hortman was elected in 2004 and was Speaker-Emerita of the House of Representatives, which is narrowly controlled by Republicans. Walz calls Sept. 16 special election to fill slain lawmaker Rep. Melissa Hortman's seat

Brooklyn Park voters will take to the polls on Sept. 16 to fill the vacant seat of Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was killed last month in a politically motivated assassination. Gov. Tim Walz on Friday issued a writ of special election for the House District 34B seat, which encompasses parts of Anoka and Hennepin counties. A special primary for the seat, if necessary, will be on Aug. 12. Hortman and her husband were shot and killed on June 14 in their Brooklyn Park home. Their deaths, along with the attempted assassination of Sen. John Hoffman, DFL-Champlin, and his wife have left Minnesota in a state of shock and grief. Hortman first ran for the House seat in 1998 and 2002 and lost both times before winning in 2004 in what was then a swing district. Like many suburban districts, it has since become solidly blue. In 2024, Hortman won her race by 26 percentage points over her Republican challenger and served as the House DFL caucus leader until her death. Given the current status of the House — Republicans hold a 1-seat (67-66) advantage — Democrats are likely to take no chances, despite the near lock on keeping the seat. House Democrats will also likely knock on doors and fundraise to keep the seat blue in honor of their former leader. Brooklyn Park City Council member Christian Eriksen earlier this week announced that he intends to seek the DFL endorsement for the open seat. 'I know in our communities, this seat will endure as 'Melissa's Seat,'' Eriksen said in a social media post announcing his candidacy. 'It is with great respect to her legacy, as well as the legacy of all those whom have served before us, that I run for this office.' Hortman, who was among the most influential Minnesota elected officials in the past decade, served as House Speaker from 2019 to 2024.
