Followers feel ‘abandoned' as plus-size influencers embrace weight loss, blame Trump for cultural shift

Fox News2 days ago
Fans of overweight influencers are reportedly feeling "abandoned" as those they look up to are choosing to lose weight.
"I think the audiences that are feeling abandoned, in my opinion, largely the feedback is not, 'I'm mad that you're skinny,'" Lydia Okello, a writer and model who was quoted in a recent Teen Vogue article entitled, "The Community Ozempic Stole: As Influencers Lose Weight, Their Followers Feel 'Abandoned.'"
"The feedback is, 'why are you acting like the body that I have is not worthy any more,'" Okello added, who calls herself "fat enby fashion bud" on her X profile.
Some even go so far as to blame President Donald Trump and his administration for the changing landscape.
"We're in a time when we have an administration which is trying to control us in every sense," said Wray Serna, founder of the clothing brand, WRAY, that calls itself an "inclusive, fine art inspired clothing line."
"I think it's a broad cultural message people are receiving that is about control, about conforming, about making yourself as 'perfect' as possible," Serna added. "I think it's deeply rooted in patriarchy. I think it's deeply rooted in racism."
She said the industry has given her community.
"[Fashion] was such a disappointing industry … until I opened up my sizing and discovered this whole other side of fashion that I didn't even know about," Serna said.
"That was one of the most surprising things that could have happened," she added. "It made me believe in fashion again, in humanity again. I found that community to be so welcoming and kind."
Some celebrities who have recently made news with their weight-loss achievements include Lizzo, who recently celebrated reaching her weight-loss goal, saying she hadn't seen that number on the scale since 2014.
The singer had in the past criticized speculation that her weight loss was due to taking Ozempic.
Others on weight-loss journeys include Kelly Clarkson, Kathy Bates, Eric Stonestreet, John Goodman and Adele.
Okello said she thinks the fascination of some with losing weight is contradictory to the body-positivity message they have embraced.
"I don't believe it's my right to tell someone [my opinion on] whether or not they want to lose weight," Okello told Teen Vogue. "But I have seen influencers who talked a lot about accepting their body where it was, or appreciating how they look regardless [of weight] really flipping the script and using the way they looked previously as a negative contrast to where they are now. That part is what I really disagree with."
Emma Zack, founder & CEO of Berriez, a vintage and plus-sized clothing shop, also sees inconsistency in the trend toward weight loss.
"It's this weird dichotomy, when a plus size influencer who has made their entire business on being plus size gets thin, we're not entitled to talk about their body changes," Zack told Teen Vogue. "They don't owe us this explanation. However they've built their entire platform on body positivity. So when they're getting thin and ignoring it, what's going on?"

Selena Gomez Tests Out the Suit and Sandal Combo for a Summer Date Night

Dressing up for summer in high heats and the arid Cali climate can be a bit of a tough one. Selena Gomez appears to have cracked the code. On Sunday (July 13), the pop star and Rare Beauty founder stepped out for date night at—where else?—celebrity hotspot Giorgio Baldi with fiancé Benny Blanco. If reports are to be believed, there's a lot of planning toward a rumored Montecito-set wedding—why not start over some red sauce? Regardless, for the occasion (eating cheesy ravioli with her love on a hot California night), Gomez opted for a sleek suit and sandal combo, giving a little bit of subversion to her usual ladylike and refined sense of style. Gomez wore for a tailored black suit, wearing a bateau neck black top underneath a black blazer, with matching suit pants that feature an ever-so-slight kick flare. On her feet, a pair of black Proenza Schouler cable thong sandals. She accessorized with—of course—her marquise diamond engagement ring, and added the fringed black Paloma bag from one of her favorite brands, Ulla Johnson. Glam stayed tested and true, wearing her newly debuted long hair—the bangs didn't last long—in soft natural waves, with a set of soapy pink nails, and a petal rose lip. Husband-to-be Benny Blanco kept to his own sartorial rhythm: the super producer wore a loose white and yellow floral shirt with camel colored pants, going sockless in brown leather loafers with gold hardware, and stacking gold chain necklaces.

‘American Idol' exec moved to LA neighborhood 'to be safe' before double homicide: family friend

ENCINO, Calif. – "American Idol" executive Robin Kaye and her husband, Thomas Deluca, were found dead inside their Los Angeles mansion on Monday — a property with a dark past and a recent history of break-ins. The couple "moved to Encino because they wanted to be safe" and had no known enemies, a close family friend told Fox News Digital. During an emotional interview, their longtime friend — who asked to remain unnamed — explained that just weeks before their murder, the couple's home was broken into. Kaye and Deluca increased their security, hoping to prevent it from happening again. "They added spikes to the top of the fence… They had spikes on the other side of the fence, and obviously updated their video surveillance as well. They had video surveillance already." When Fox News Digital asked what Kaye and Deluca had previously said about the first break-in attempt, the friend said they suspected the person wouldn't "be back" after they ramped up their security. "Their dog woke them up in the middle of the night... That's what ran them off. I think they actually broke a glass… but I think they said they broke a glass and the dog started barking, and the people ran off." "They wanted to be safe… They added spikes to the top of the fence… and obviously updated their video surveillance as well." He added that the couple were "two of the nicest people you'll ever meet." He shared that he spoke with Kaye and Deluca nearly a week before their harrowing double homicide. The family friend told Fox News Digital of fond memories of the couple, and spoke of how talented they were. "They were living life to the fullest. They travel a lot. They have some great animals. They have a dog. They have an amazing bird that does tricks. They have a turtle that they found at their first house they bought when they moved to LA, and they've taken their turtle with them every place," he said. "Very talented people too. Robin has excelled in her job. Tom's a great songwriter, producer in his own right. And they're just really wonderful people." The Los Angeles mansion, which the couple purchased in 2023, previously belonged to rapper Juice WRLD. WATCH: LAPD LIEUTENANT GUY GOLAN SAYS THE MOTIVE IS CURRENTLY UNKNOWN AFTER ROBIN KAYE AND HER HUSBAND WERE FOUND MURDERED IN THEIR LA HOME The rapper died of an accidental overdose in 2019 after reportedly ingesting Percocet pills in an attempt to hide them, while federal agents searched his private jet at a Chicago airport. After his death, the Encino property was rented out before eventually being sold to Kaye and Deluca in 2023. Their deaths come amid a troubling string of high-profile break-ins in the area. In May, actor Anthony Anderson's home — also in Encino — was broken into by three men while he attended a charity fundraiser in Palm Springs. Police said at the time no arrests had been made in connection to that case, according to ABC News. Last August, another family in Encino fell victim to the wave of burglaries sweeping through the San Fernando Valley. Investigators said at the time that there were at least 15 break-ins in the area over the past month, according to FOX 11. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department is continuing their investigation into the harrowing murders of Kaye and Deluca. LAPD Lieutenant Guy Golan provided an update to Fox News Digital on the next steps in the investigation after the suspect, 22-year-old Raymond Boodarian, was arrested for double homicide — crimes that at this point in the investigation appear to be random. "He was arrested from his place of residence. Over near the 19,000 block of Van Owen Street. He was arrested without incident," Golan told Fox News Digital. "He did not provide any statements at this time, and investigators plan on filing charges for murder against him." At the home of the murder suspect, a family spokesperson told Fox News Digital, "Sorry for everything that has happened. And sorry for the couple that lost their lives." Golan explained that his team is now putting the case together to present it to the district attorney's office for further consideration, but at this time, "there's no motive." He pointed out that the suspect was identified through surveillance video, as well as forensic evidence that was at the scene that police had "expedited analysis" on. WATCH: SECUREIT HOMES TECHNICIAN DETAILS WHAT WAS INCLUDED IN AN ESTIMATE FOR ROBIN KAYE AND TOM DELUCA'S HOME LAPD officials said the double homicide of Kaye and Deluca, who were found with multiple gunshot wounds, appeared to be a random act of violence. Kaye and Deluca, were found dead inside their home after officers responded to a call around 2:30 p.m. on July 14 for a welfare check in the 4700 block of White Oak Avenue in Encino. Both victims were 70. It is believed the murders may have occurred on July 10 after the investigation revealed the LAPD had received two calls that day reporting a possible burglary suspect at the house around 4 p.m., according to police.

5 best plus-size swimsuits from Old Navy, according to someone who wears a size 2XL

Shopping for swimsuits can be challenging, especially if you're plus-size. You want something that's both comfortable and cute, but still supportive for larger chests and frames. As a size 2XL, I've struggled to find the sweet spot. As an Old Navy sales associate, one of the perks of my job is being able to try on swimsuits and see which ones work for my body. Luckily for me, and for anyone looking for a flattering plus-size swimsuit, there are a ton of great options at Old Navy right now. I tried on five plus-size swimsuits from Old Navy for summer, and below, I've shared my thoughts on each. To see how they fit and shop them on sale (starting from just $11!), scroll below. Matte One-Piece Swimsuit Tie-Front Swim Cover-Up Matte Cutout Back One-Piece Swimsuit Textured Swim Top Textured One-Piece Balconette Swimsuit Matte One-Piece Swimsuit This one-piece is practical, simple and a great option to wear for a beach day. I love the cut and style, and I also like that you can pair it with shorts or a skirt, too. It is more snug, so I suggest sizing up if you prefer more breathing room around the chest and waist. I also found the straps to be slightly tight around the shoulders. Matte One-Piece Swimsuit Tie-Front Swim Cover-Up This is such a cute swimsuit. I love that it isn't your usual bikini top, and I also love that you don't need to worry about it getting wet. It's a stylish option for the beach, and it's also perfect to pair with a skirt or shorts to a pool party or a barbecue. The only thing I'd mention is the fit of the top. It is a bit tight. So, I suggest sizing up if you prefer more coverage around the chest. Tie-Front Swim Cover-Up Matte Cutout Back One-Piece Swimsuit I love the cut of this one-piece. The back strings may make you hesitate, but they genuinely do work with the overall fit. The cut around the chest is super flattering, and I love pairing it with all of my skirts. It's also very true to size, so no need to size up at all. I accidentally did, and it was a bit loose around the bottom and chest. That said, you might even prefer to size down for a tighter fit. Matte Cutout Back One-Piece Swimsuit Textured Swim Top This bikini top is very comfortable and I love how it holds my chest in place. The overall fit isn't too tight or loose, and the straps also fit well. The only thing I'd be mindful of is the lock at the back. It doesn't stay in place, but it still does its job. Textured Swim Top Textured One-Piece Balconette Swimsuit This one-piece is so figure-flattering and the underwire support is much appreciated, especially as someone who is heavier-chested. It does run a bit large, so sizing down might be ideal. Other than that, this is a great option to wear to the pool or pack on an overnight trip. Textured One-Piece Balconette Swimsuit
