The central government has approved the setting up of a ₹ 417-crore Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC 2.0) in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Budh Nagar district, at Sector 10 of the Yamuna Expressway, to boost local electronics production and innovation.
The project is expected to attract investments to the tune of ₹ 2,500 crore and lead to the creation of around 15,000 jobs.
'It is fully in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision of promoting manufacturing in India. It reflects the government's sharp focus on job creation and building a Viksit (developed) Bharat,' said IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
The EMC 2.0 will be developed by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) on 206.4 acres.
The ₹ 417-crore project cost excludes the cost of land, but includes ₹ 144 crore in central financial assistance from the IT ministry, with the remaining amount to be funded by Yeida, as per the approval document seen by HT. The project is expected to be completed by January 2028 and will feature facilities such as a skill development centre, a convention centre, and a three-storey hostel block, among others.
The project is anchored by Havells, with an investment of ₹ 800 crore. The company will be allotted 50 acres for manufacturing domestic appliances, such as fans, AC, coolers, lighting, switchgear, cables, etc.
The EMC 2.0, located along the Yamuna Expressway and near the upcoming Jewar airport, will also support the production of industrial electronics to medical devices, computer hardware, and communication equipment, according to a press release.
The development comes as a further boost, close on the heels of last month's announcement of the establishment of an HCL-Foxconn semiconductor OSAT facility near Jewar airport. This unit will invite an investment of ₹ 3,700 crore and is the sixth semiconductor unit announced under the IT ministry's India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
Uttar Pradesh will also soon unveil a state-level top-up to the Centre's Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), previously reported by HT. In addition to central incentives, the state government is likely to announce a package worth over ₹ 10,000 crore to attract electronics manufacturers to set up operations in the state, HT has learnt.
Uttar Pradesh accounts for 25% of India's total electronics manufacturing and contributes a significant 50% to the country's mobile phone production, a senior government official told HT. While it is normally said that Tamil Nadu leads in electronics exports, UP is ahead in overall manufacturing, with the majority of the state's output coming from the Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway region, added the official.

Work begins on ‘Greater Ghaziabad' plan; Khoda, Loni, Muradnagar likely to merge
The Ghaziabad district administration has begun preparing a roadmap for the proposed 'Greater Ghaziabad' project, under which local bodies such as Khoda, Loni, and Muradnagar may be merged into the Ghaziabad municipal corporation. The move comes following directions from Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who floated the idea during a visit to the district on Thursday, officials said. According to officials, the Ghaziabad Development Authority has already included Ghaziabad, Loni, Muradnagar, and Modinagar in its integrated draft Master Plan 2031. (HT Archive) The chief minister was in Ghaziabad to inaugurate a data centre at Central Electronics Limited and to visit Kailash Mansarovar Bhawan in Indirapuram. Addressing an event, he emphasised integrated development and proposed the formation of a larger municipal entity named Greater Ghaziabad. The proposal will require both legislative approval and a cabinet nod, with the final decision resting with the state government. 'On directions of the chief minister, we have asked the officials of the district administration and the corporation to chalk out a plan, which will then be submitted to the state government,' said Deepak Meena, district magistrate of Ghaziabad. 'The final decision will be taken at the state government level and will also involve the state cabinet.' The Ghaziabad district currently comprises nine local bodies—one municipal corporation, four Nagar Palikas (Khoda, Loni, Modinagar, and Muradnagar), and four Nagar Panchayats (Patla, Dasna, Faridnagar, and Niwari). In 2023, ahead of the inauguration of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) priority section in Ghaziabad, BJP MLAs Sunil Sharma (Sahibabad) and Nandkishor Gurjar (Loni) had raised concerns about civic issues in Khoda and Loni to the chief minister. While BJP leaders support the proposed merger, some political opponents have criticised it as a reaction to electoral losses. Former MLA Amarpal Sharma, whose wife Mohini Sharma currently chairs the Khoda Nagar Palika, said, 'After the BJP lost the Khoda chairperson seat in 2023, its politicians floated the concept of merger. The corporation itself struggles to manage its jurisdiction areas, and managing Khoda and Loni would be a tough task. People in Khoda are yet to get tapped water supply and face many other civic issues like bad roads, sewerage disposal, proper drainage, etc., after repeated promises for years.' In the May 2023 civic polls, the BJP won the Ghaziabad mayoral seat but lost the chairperson elections in Loni, Khoda, and Muradnagar Nagar Palikas. The party managed to retain only the Modinagar chairperson seat. Nandkishor Gurjar, BJP MLA from Loni, dismissed allegations of political motivation. 'The local bodies proposed by the CM for merger under the corporation suffer many issues like water-logging, bad roads, drinking water shortages, sewerage problems, among others,' he said. 'Since these areas will see massive housing development in the future, it is vital that these areas also get developed like Ghaziabad city. Further, they will also be able to receive big funds for development. So, it is vital that they become part of Greater Ghaziabad.' Meanwhile, Ranjita Dhama, the chairperson of Loni Nagar Palika, did not respond to requests for comment. According to officials, the Ghaziabad Development Authority has already included Ghaziabad, Loni, Muradnagar, and Modinagar in its integrated draft Master Plan 2031.

Around 12 lakh railway staffers are tirelessly working towards realising this dream, he said. Live Events The Purulia-Bankura-Howrah MEMU train via Masagram would boost rural, local and regional rail connectivity and passenger convenience, he said. The service is set to improve daily commute options for thousands of passengers across Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Purulia, Bankura and surrounding districts. By connecting key junctions in West Bengal, the train will not only ensure faster travel but also facilitate economic activity, he said. During the 2014-25 period, Kolkata Metro added 41 km to its network, compared to only 28 km between 1972, when the project started, and 2014. Underlining challenges related to land acquisition and traffic permission for Kolkata Metro and other railway projects, Vaishnaw urged the state government "to rise above other things for the benefit of people". He referred to such challenges on the Kolkata Metro route at Kidderpore, Chingrighata and Beleghata area and also to the Bishnupur-Tarakeshwar rail route. Vaishnaw lauded the ongoing development of the Santragachi railway station as an Amrit Bharat station, especially the progress of work in the last one and a half years. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a long-term plan to improve railway stations across India in a step-by-step manner. "The station is being modernised as a passenger and environment-friendly facility. It has been designed to handle over 50,000 passengers daily by 2063, in addition to ensuring time-bound train movement," he said. Lok Sabha MPs Prasun Banerjee and Saumitra Khan were also present in the programme, besides senior railway officials.
