Xperia 5 series remains absent for a second year
What might be a more noteworthy piece of news, however, is revealed by the lack of any Xperia 5 VII mentions.
Traditionally, the Xperia 5 line has served as the company's smaller alternative to the Xperia 1 series, with similar camera tech and chip performance but in a more compact form factor. But at this point, we might be looking at a second consecutive generation without the smaller Sony flagship.
Uncertain future for U.S. and other global markets
The new mid-ranger was spotted in a database listing with model numbers ranging from PM-1510-BV to PM-1515-BV, and carries the internal code name XQ-FE44. Based on this timing, the device could arrive later this year, possibly sometime in October. This new information follows the recent global launch of the Xperia 1 VII , Sony's current flagship for the year. So far, it's the only Xperia phone Sony has officially released in 2025. The emergence of a second model aligns with Sony's tradition of offering a more affordable Xperia 10 variant later in the year.No technical specifications have leaked yet, but the Xperia 10 series typically aims at the mid-range segment, offering lightweight designs, long battery life, and 5G connectivity in a more accessible package. Last year's Xperia 10 VI featured a 5,000mAh battery, Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor, and a 6.1-inch OLED display — specs we may see lightly upgraded this year. The lack of new Xperia 5 seems to support speculations that Sony has abandoned this segment in favor of focusing on larger flagship phones and mid-range devices. Although, it might even be that Sony is slowly abandoning the smartphone market altogether The new Xperia 1 VII has yet to launch in North America, raising questions about Sony's commitment to that market. If this is any indication of the company's broader strategy, the upcoming Xperia 10 VII may follow a similar path of remaining limited to Asia and Europe, at least initially. For now, it seems the only Sony phones we'll see in 2025 are the Xperia 1 VII and the Xperia 10 VII. Hopefully, the latter performs better in its category than the flagship has in its own.

Liquid Glass returns to iOS 26: toned down, but with its original vision intact

Apple introduced iOS 26 and its new UI design — Liquid Glass — at WWDC ( Worldwide Developers Conference ) this year, only to immediately backtrack after criticism. Fortunately, the company didn't completely abandon its redesign, and has improved it for better legibility while still retaining its original Glass was toned down dramatically in iOS 26 Beta 3, to the point where it didn't look like what was shown off at WWDC at all. The original design was mocked endlessly on social media, citing legibility problems as well as higher processing power requirements. But with iOS 26 Beta 4, Apple has made Liquid Glass actually look like the advertised design again, despite continuing everyone is happy, and there's likely still more work to be done on the design before the public release this fall. But, in my opinion, it looks pretty good, and I share Apple insider Mark Gurman's sentiments that the company shouldn't abandon an entirely new UI because of some negative posts online. Liquid Glass is, in my eyes, a fantastic UI design. It isn't just some transparent menu bars, there is genuine thought and effort behind it. The way the backgrounds reflect inside the UI elements is mesmerizing. There were definitely some problems with Liquid Glass at launch, but I think it deserves a chance to really prove itself. This design is likely building up to the new 20th anniversary iPhone Pro model that is reportedly under development. That Pro model will allegedly feature a display with no cutouts or other distractions, and is also said to have curved edges, so the screen covers the entire front of the phone. Apple seems to be going all in on its new design, as a recent report claims that the iPhone 17 Pro will have a new color option inspired by Liquid Glass. With all that in mind, and iOS 26 Beta 4 in front of us, it now seems a bit silly to have thought that Apple would completely abandon Liquid Glass at the drop of a hat.

Apple Watch might finally get an amazing feature to help you with your sleep

Sleep tracking with Apple Watch may become better as Apple appears to be working on a sleep score feature. Hints of the new feature were discovered inside the code of the latest iOS 26 beta, which was released today. A new image was spotted inside the code of the Health app by a MacRumors contributor. The graphic shows an Apple Watch with the number '84' on it, surrounded by three bars. The colors of the bars match those used to mark the different sleep stages tracked by the smartwatch. Outside the watch, the image shows four sleep-related icons, which Apple has used in other parts of iOS. The icons include a moon with stars, a 'zzz', a bed, and an alarm clock. The report also mentions a thermometer icon in another spot. The sleep-related image spotted in the iOS 26 code | Image credit — MacRumors The name of the image is 'Watch Focus Score,' which strongly suggests a sleep-related score that the Apple Watch might provide. Considering the name, the sleep score might be tied to the Sleep Focus and rate the quality of sleep. Currently, Apple provides sleep tracking with the Apple Watch, but it only gives information about the amount of sleep and its stages. They're separated in REM, Core, and Deep Sleep, with an additional category for the awake time while Sleep Focus was active. Providing sleep score isn't something new in the world of wearables. Other devices, including Garmin's watches, the Oura Ring, and Huawei's wearables, give users similar scores. Usually, that score is also used to provide a readiness score. Samsung's recently announced health-focused Galaxy Watch 8 go even further and provides Sleep Coaching. The temperature icon suggests that Apple may be factoring in various metrics when creating the score. That's how the Vitals app works on watchOS 11, so it makes sense for Apple to use a similar approach to a sleep-related feature. Sleep tracking is one of the main reasons I wear a smartwatch, so any upgrade to this type of feature is more than welcome. I am less excited about having a numeric measure of how bad my sleep often is, but that could serve as a motivation for a positive change. It might as well be just another vital score I happily ignore.

Apple's long-awaited HomePod with a screen might be coming soon

After years of rumors, Apple may finally be on the verge of releasing a HomePod with a screen. A reference to one of the company's most long-awaited products was spotted in the fourth beta of iOS 26, which might be a hint at an imminent launch. Apple has used a very curious language in reference to a location-related setting for the HomePod. The setting, which was spotted by MacRumors in the just-released iOS 26 beta 4, says the following: iOS 26 beta 4 Settings, July 2025 If you're still wondering what's so special about that message, I have a hint – it's the word 'show'. Currently, no HomePod model can show anything to anyone, as there's no screen to display the information. Multiple rumors of a new HomePod with a display have been spread in the last few years. The device may be part of Apple's new strategy for the smart home, and serve as a smart home hub. Some of the rumors about such a HomePod compare it with an iPad, but with a square display rather than a rectangular one. The device might be able to control all HomeKit and Matter devices in the home while running Apple's core apps, including Apple Music, Photos, and Calendar. Just like older HomePods, the new model is supposed to rely heavily on an integration with Siri. The assistant is supposed to be at the core of the device's voice control abilities, similar to Apple's current HomePods. Part of the reason for the delayed launch of the new HomePod might also be the issues with Apple Intelligence and the smarter version of Siri. Apple is also rumored to work on a more advanced home device, which may be equipped with a robotic arm. I wouldn't be surprised if the new HomePod arrives along with the smarter AI-powered Siri, which is rumored for next spring. Apple failed to release it along the 'Made for Apple Intelligence ' iPhone 16, so a brand-new type of device might be a fitting way to introduce its capabilities to the world.
