What is it like to drive?
It doesn't drive quite like the Renault 5, but its character is similar. The suspension is a little calmer than the 5's, while the steering remains quickish and accurate, working in harmony with the suspension to feed you smoothly into and through a bend.
To begin with that steering feels remote, but push the cornering effort harder and sensory messages start to come up from the tyres. Messages of the sophisticated multi-link rear suspension keeping everything nicely precise and balanced front to rear. It's properly enjoyable and serves you with a smile.

In town or on tight rural lanes, you might want to set up a personal drive mode that softens the initial accelerator response. That makes it smoother to drive in traffic. It also lets you meter out the torque gently from a corner, not that you'll be wheelspinning much. Is it comfy?
Not unexpectedly, that firm-ish setup translates into a somewhat busy ride. But it's not harsh or distracting, and shrugs off big bumps and dips extremely well. The tyres and suspension are also quiet, which helps you ignore the road-level perturbations and wind noise at higher speeds. And bumps don't knock you off line. You just point and steer.
Power is more than enough for suburbs and B-roads, and there's just enough to avoid being bullied on the motorway. The 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds is the sort of thing that'd be considered lively in a sub-£30k petrol family car: there's no particular need for it to be quicker.
The brakes are pretty sensitive at low speed, but in solid stops they're reassuring and consistent. There are four levels of regen – including a one-pedal mode – and you'll quickly get into the habit of flicking away at the paddles to gently slow the car without the brake pedal.

The R4 is just 1.8 metres across the body and under 4.2m long, and sure enough feels handy when threading down narrow streets and lanes. It'll even tow a 750kg trailer.
Good news if you only want to holiday within an hour's radius of your own bed. Does the range hold up?
Expect 200-220 miles range; around 4.0 mi/kWh, obscure stats fans. And when we tested the car mid-heatwave we got close to the magic 5.0 mi/kWh at urban speeds. Inevitably those numbers will plummet in winter, but the standard heat pump and (relatively) low weight stand the R4 in good stead. What about driver assist?
The base Evolution spec is standard cruise control and just a lane-departure warning system, while the Iconic spec comes with full adaptive cruise with lane centring. Both are pretty well calibrated.
Anyway, the R4 has a hardware switch for the driver-assist. Double-press it and you get your preferred setup. So you can pick that preferred setup just the once, never to return to the screen menu. Ideal.

And that is a strategic asset approach where you get the roads fit for purpose before they are ready to fail."In May, Reform UK took control of KCC, wiping out the Conservative majority after nearly 30 Howe said it was "too early to tell" if the change in leadership would lead to major changes."They've got some great ideas. And they have said potholes are their priority, which is brilliant from our point of view," he Secretary Heidi Alexander said potholes had "plagued motorists for far too long"."This government is firmly on the side of drivers. Every area of England will get extra cash to tackle this problem once and for all."

New proposals have been drawn up to tackle inconsiderate parking in part of the Peak County Council has launched a consultation on plans to introduce restrictions on several roads in Castleton which has seen a huge spike in tourists since the Covid pandemic. These include new "red routes" which prohibit stopping at any time on several roads, the addition of yellow lines to other roads and limited stay parking bays on other red routes will be a first for Derbyshire but are used extensively in other parts of the country, the council said. The plans were drawn up after residents and officials voiced concerns about increasing parking issues caused by rising visitor January Derbyshire Police said they were forced to close multiple roads, including Winnats Pass and Rushup Edge near Castleton, due to "selfish parking".It followed reports of about 200 parked cars blocking gritting lorries and emergency services trying to respond to an injured walker near Edale. Restrictions on the south side of Buxton Road will include a maximum stay of four hours between 09:00 to 17:00 in marked bays with no return allowed within one unnamed road towards the Blue John Cavern, Sparrowpit and a highway from Rushup Edge Farm turning head will have its double yellow lines replaced with red lines which means no stopping at anytime. Blue John Cavern has asked for some limited waiting bays to be created on the unnamed road close to its entrance so it is proposed to convert 10 of the unrestricted bays into limited waiting baysDouble yellow lines will be introduced on Pindale Road and Millbridge in the vicinity of Trickett Close and How current single yellow line on the east side of Back Street will also be converted to a double yellow and display parking bays on old Mam Tor Road are set to be extended from weekends and bank holidays to seven days a week between 09:00 to 17:00 with a maximum stay of four hours. The council said the new measure would ensure there was a turnover of parking spaces in these bays. New parking meters will also be up old Mam Tor Road, there will be marked parking bays allowing vehicles to park with no restrictions. Charlotte Hill, cabinet member for potholes, highways and transport at Derbyshire County Council, said: "Our road safety team has been working with Castleton Parish Council to try and identify ways to better manage parking in the village."Castleton is a beautiful place to visit, but the roads were never designed for the kinds of traffic volumes – and the size of vehicles – that we see today."For the past few years, there have been concerns about inconsiderate parking, and some motorists not understanding the restrictions that are currently in place."We hope that our proposals will help local people, make things clearer for visitors and reduce disruption to help make sure visitors enjoy the beauty of our county."Alongside our proposals to restrict parking, we will also look to enforce the restrictions robustly with our team of parking attendants, to ensure traffic can move safely and smoothly in the area, reducing congestion and unnecessary delays."
